We analyze the earnings penalty of smoking among Swedish twins in two social contexts: the 1970s, when smoking was common and widely accepted and when there were relatively few tobacco laws aiming to reduce smoking; and the 2000s, when smoking had become more expensive, stigmatizing and less common, and when tobacco laws and regulations had intensified. The results show that the short-term earnings penalty of smoking was much higher in the 21st century than in the 1970s for men. For women, smokers had on av...
Bleeding from the staple line is a rare but serious problem following bariatric surgery. Staple line bleeding control (SLBC) can be achieved in different ways such as the application of sutures, clips, glue or buttressing materials over the staple line. Cauterization alone is generally not preferred due to concerns about debilitating the staple line.
Emeritus Professor Jonathan Clemence Peter passed away in Wynberg, Cape Town, on April 02, 2018, after an illness confronted with quiet courage and dignity. A beloved father, husband, neurosurgeon, leader, teacher, mentor and friend, he is remembered with deep respect and affection throughout the world of paediatric neurosurgery.
Complications after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy: can we approach a 0% rate using the largest staple height with reinforcement all along the staple line? Short-term results and technical considerations.
Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is gaining acceptance among bariatric surgeons as a viable option for treating morbidly obese patients. We describe the results of a single center's experience with SG, revealing a low complication rate.
Incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy with staple line reinforcement with oversewing and staple line inversion vs buttressing material: a randomized clinical trial.
Postoperative nausea and vomiting are relevant complications after restrictive bariatric procedures, such as sleeve gastrectomy, mainly secondary to a drastic reduction in the gastric volume. However, other causes can be involved. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG), with staple line reinforcement with oversewing vs buttressing material.
Management of staple-line leaks following laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is challenging and controversial. Guidelines for leak treatment are not standardized and often involve multidisciplinary management by surgical, medical and radiological methods. Herein we present our experience and proposed strategy for handling leaks after LSG.
Recent comparisons of suture versus metal staple skin closure on the rates of wound complications in orthopaedic surgeries have yielded conflicting results. Several studies have since started to approach this question based on anatomic location, comparing suture versus staple closure in total hip and knee arthroplasty and acetabulum fracture surgery. Ankle fractures are one of the most commonly treated fractures by orthopaedic surgeons with unique challenges to skin closure due to the lack of subcutaneous s...

The 2018 Lake Louise Acute Mountain Sickness Score. High Alt Med Biol 00:000-000, 2018.- The Lake Louise Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) scoring system has been a useful research tool since first published in 1991. Recent studies have shown that disturbed sleep at altitude, one of the five symptoms scored for AMS, is more likely due to alti...
A laboratory study investigated whether reductions in the probability of reciprocation would influence sharing in situations of shortfall risk. Choice in twelve adults was evaluated against the predictions of a risk-reduction model of sharing derived from a risk-sensitive foraging theory (the energy-budget rule). Participants responded on a computer task to earn hypothetical money which could be later exchanged for real money. If participants selected the sharing option, their earnings were pooled and split...
The 2017 International Forum on Gonococcal Infections and Resistance (2017 IFGIR) was held at Shenzhen, China from 17 to 19 September 2017. The key objectives were to gather experts in the field to review and analyze the epidemiological profiles of gonococcal infections and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) at global, regional and national levels; to share and discuss findings from ongoing and completed research studies; and to identify research needs to respond to the spread of gonococcal infections and AMR. ...
Superficial medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury is an occasional intraoperative complication during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) that can lead to failure. Although previous studies have recommended complex repair or conversion to a constrained implant, the authors evaluated results of superficial distal MCL reapproximation using bone staples. Records of 31 patients who underwent staple reapproximation for superficial MCL avulsion from the tibial attachment during primary TKA from 2005 to 2015 were revi...
This is a report from the 20th Meeting of the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO) held in Vienna, Austria on November 4 to 7, 2017. The conference offered state-of-the-art educational sessions and oral and poster abstract presentations. The general sessions throughout the meeting focused not only on prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and translational research but also emerging trends, and current innovations in gynecological cancers were discussed. The ESGO-European Society for Rad...
Children's cheating and factors supporting honesty are not well understood. The current work explored variables involved in children's cheating through eye-tracking and an implicit manipulation in which extrinsic awareness of the effects of one's behaviors on others was primed. Participants played a computer game with the option for a monetary gain in which they could earn more if they selectively erred in response to more profitable stimuli. Results show that children cheat by making selective effort towar...
Evaluate the effectiveness of the use of fibrin sealant (FS) for preventing the development of staple line complications (SLCs) after sleeve gastrectomy (SG).

Cultural consumption is often viewed as a form of embodied cultural capital which can be converted into economic rewards (e.g., earnings) because such practices increase the likelihood of moving into more advantaged social positions. However, quantitative evidence supporting this theory remains uncertain because it is often unable to rule out alternative explanations. Cultural consumption appears to influence hiring decisions in some elite firms, in both the US and the UK, but it is unclear whether these pr...
We present a shape matching approach for functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) time course and spectral alignment. We use ideas from differential geometry and functional data analysis to define a functional representation for fMRI signals. The space of fMRI functions is then equipped with a reparameterization invariant Riemannian metric that enables elastic alignment of both amplitude and phase of the fMRI time courses as well as their power spectral densities. Experimental results show significant i...
This paper introduces a new IV strategy based on IVF (in vitro fertilization) induced fertility variation among childless women to estimate the causal effect of having children on their career. For this purpose, we use administrative data on IVF treated women in Denmark. Because observed chances of IVF success do not depend on labor market histories, IVF treatment success provides a plausible instrument for childbearing. Our IV estimates indicate that fertility effects on earnings are: (i) negative, large, ...
Urinary retention in women is poorly understood, compared to the equivalent condition in men, and was the subject of a dedicated session organized at the International Consultation on Incontinence Research Society (ICI-RS) in Bristol, United Kingdom, 2017.
"… The value and meaning of scientific truth has not been overcome by postmodernism or post-factual tendencies. Just because politics is mostly a representation of opinions, this does not imply that truth has become irrelevant. Quite the opposite, the value of truth is growing in turbulent times and for scientists it constitutes the currency of credibility and accountability …" Read more in the Guest Editorial by Peter R.
