Practices Caring For The Underserved Are Less Likely To Adopt Medicare's Annual Wellness Visit.

In 2011 Medicare introduced the annual wellness visit to help address the health risks of aging adults. The visit also offers primary care practices an opportunity to generate revenue, and may allow practices in accountable care organizations to attract healthier patients while stabilizing patient-practitioner assignments. However, uptake of the visit has been uneven. Using national Medicare data for the period 2008-15, we assessed practices' ability and motivation to adopt the visit. In 2015, 51.2 percent...

NMReDATA, a standard to report the NMR assignment and parameters of organic compounds.

Even though NMR has found countless applications in the field of small molecule characterization, there is no standard file format available for the NMR data relevant to structure characterization of small molecules. A new format is therefore introduced to associate the NMR parameters extracted from 1D and 2D spectra of organic compounds to the proposed chemical structure. These NMR parameters, which we shall call NMReDATA (for nuclear magnetic resonance extracted data), include chemical shift values, signa...

Publisher Correction: Controllable molecular motors engineered from myosin and RNA.

An incorrect Supplementary Information file was originally published. The file has been replaced with the correct one.

Correction to: Lifetime stress accelerates epigenetic aging in an urban, African American cohort: relevance of glucocorticoid signaling.

Upon publication of the original article [1] it was highlighted by the authors that a transposition error affected Additional file 1, causing the misplacement of several columns and rendering the table difficult to read. This transposition does not influence any of the results nor analyses presented in the paper and has since been formally noted in this correction article; the corrected file is available here as an Additional File. The publisher apologizes for this error.

Revenue-sharing clubs provide economic insurance and incentives for sustainability in common-pool resource systems.

Harvesting behaviors of natural resource users, such as farmers, fishermen and aquaculturists, are shaped by season-to-season and day-to-day variability, or in other words risk. Here, we explore how risk-mitigation strategies can lead to sustainable use and improved management of common-pool natural resources. Over-exploitation of unmanaged natural resources, which lowers their long-term productivity, is a central challenge facing societies. While effective top-down management is a possible solution, it is ...

Negative beliefs about back pain are associated with persistent, high levels of low back disability in community-based women.

Although pessimistic beliefs about back pain are associated with low back pain and disability, our understanding of their role in the natural history of the condition is limited. This study examined the association between beliefs about back pain and the development and progression of low back pain and disability over a 2-year period in community-dwelling women.

Digital Stratigraphy: Contextual Analysis of File System Traces in Forensic Science.

This work introduces novel methods for conducting forensic analysis of file allocation traces, collectively called digital stratigraphy. These in-depth forensic analysis methods can provide insight into the origin, composition, distribution, and time frame of strata within storage media. Using case examples and empirical studies, this paper illuminates the successes, challenges, and limitations of digital stratigraphy. This study also shows how understanding file allocation methods can provide insight into ...

Collaborative and Reproducible Research: Goals, Challenges, and Strategies.

Combining imaging biomarkers with genomic and clinical phenotype data is the foundation of precision medicine research efforts. Yet, biomedical imaging research requires unique infrastructure compared with principally text-driven clinical electronic medical record (EMR) data. The issues are related to the binary nature of the file format and transport mechanism for medical images as well as the post-processing image segmentation and registration needed to combine anatomical and physiological imaging data so...

Head Movements Allow Listeners Bilaterally Implanted With Cochlear Implants to Resolve Front-Back Confusions.

We report on the ability of patients fit with bilateral cochlear implants (CIs) to distinguish the front-back location of sound sources both with and without head movements. At issue was (i) whether CI patients are more prone to front-back confusions than normal hearing listeners for wideband, high-frequency stimuli; and (ii) if CI patients can utilize dynamic binaural difference cues, in tandem with their own head rotation, to resolve these front-back confusions. Front-back confusions offer a binary metric...

Using 13C in cattle hair to trace back the maize level in the feeding regime-A field test.

Sections from cattle hair serve as an isotopic archive-they contain information on the cattle diet from different time periods. We tested the reliability of 13C signatures (δ13C) in cattle tail switch hair to retrospectively trace back the annual dietary proportion of maize of different production systems without having to sample and analyze the feed. Furthermore, we investigated if differences in dietary proportion of maize during summer and winter feeding can be detected in a single tail switch hair by s...

Differential effects of angry faces on working memory updating in younger and older adults.

Research suggests that cognition-emotion interactions change with age. In the present study, younger and older adults completed a 2-back task, and the effects of negative stimuli were analyzed as a function of their status in the n-back sequence. Older adults were found to benefit more from angry than from neutral probes relative to younger adults. However, they were slower when lures were angry and less accurate when lures and probes had the same emotion. The results suggest that recollection of the n-back...

Addressing the Challenge of Molecular Change: An Interim Report.

Invited by the editorial committee of the Annual Review of Physical Chemistry to "contribute my autobiography," I present it here, as I understand the term. It is about my parents, my mentors, my coworkers, and my friends in learning and the scientific problems that we tried to address. Courtesy of the editorial assistance of Annual Reviews, some of the science is in the figure captions and sidebars. I am by no means done: I am currently trying to fuse the quantitative rigor of physical chemistry with syste...

Decrease in Diversity of Propionibacterium acnes Phylotypes in Patients with Severe Acne on the Back.

Propionibacterium acnes, a major member of normal skin microbiota, is subdivided into 6 phylotypes: IA1, IA2, IB, IC, II and III. This study investigated P. acnes subgroups on the face and back in patients with severe acne and in healthy controls. In 71.4% of patients with severe acne, P. acnes phylotypes were identical on the face and back, whereas this was the case in only 45.5% of healthy controls. The healthy group carried phylotypes IA1 (39.1%) and II (43.4%), whereas the acne group carried a high pred...

This paper examines the effectiveness of red flag questions as a screening tool for patients presenting with low back pain to a multidisciplinary academic spine center.

A Family Reunion.

She had arrived from home via ambulance for back pain in the middle of the night; elderly patients with back pain are always cases that concern me - nothing chronic seems amenable to satisfying treatment and nothing acute ends well. The paramedics' report was clear: she was the acute type. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
