Effects of market type and time of purchase on oxidative status and descriptive off-odors and off-flavors of beef in Vietnam.

The objective of the current study was to determine the effects of market type (super market - SM, indoor market - IM, open market - OM) and sampling time (at the opening - T0 and 4 h after the opening - T4) on antioxidant capacity, lipid oxidation, and descriptive sensory attributes of beef in Vietnam. Values of FC and TEAC were greater in OM beef than IM and SM (P

The mathematics of market timing.

Market timing is an investment technique that tries to continuously switch investment into assets forecast to have better returns. What is the likelihood of having a successful market timing strategy? With an emphasis on modeling simplicity, I calculate the feasible set of market timing portfolios using index mutual fund data for perfectly timed (by hindsight) all or nothing quarterly switching between two asset classes, US stocks and bonds over the time period 1993-2017. The historical optimal timing path ...

The effect of weight on labor market outcomes: An application of genetic instrumental variables.

This paper contributes to the literature on the labor market consequences of obesity by using a novel instrument: genetic risk score, which reflects the predisposition to higher body mass index (BMI) across many genetic loci. We estimate instrumental variable models of the effect of BMI on labor market outcomes using Finnish data that have many strengths, for example, BMI that is measured rather than self-reported, and data on earnings and social income transfers that are from administrative tax records and...

The distribution of income is worse than you think: Including pollution impacts into measures of income inequality.

This paper calculates the distribution of an adjusted measure of income that deducts damages due to exposure to air pollution from reported market income in the United States from 2011 to 2014. The Gini coefficient for this measure of adjusted income is 0.682 in 2011, as compared to 0.482 for market income. By 2014, we estimate that the Gini for adjusted income fell to 0.646, while the market income Gini did not appreciably change. The inclusion of air pollution damage acts like a regressive tax: with air p...

Assessing the relationship between healthcare market competition and medical care quality under Taiwan's National Health Insurance programme.

There is still significant uncertainty as to whether market competition raises or lowers clinical quality in publicly funded healthcare systems. We attempted to assess the effects of market competition on inpatient care quality of stroke patients in a retrospective study of the universal single-payer health insurance system in Taiwan.

The struggle for existence in the world market ecosystem.

The global trade system can be viewed as a dynamic ecosystem in which exporters struggle for resources: the markets in which they export. We can think that the aim of an exporter is to gain the entirety of a market share (say, car imports from the United States). This is similar to the objective of an organism in its attempt to monopolize a given subset of resources in an ecosystem. In this paper, we adopt a multilayer network approach to describe this struggle. We use longitudinal, multiplex data on trade ...

Challenges of bringing a new sedative to market!

The current review examines the success and failures of the development of new hypnotic compounds for the human market. One of the important aspects is that one of the key present agents, propofol, is considered by many anaesthesiologists as 'the ideal'. However, all drugs have adverse or side-effects.

Market Stabilization Stalls; States Step In.

As federal efforts to stabilize the individual market foundered on abortion coverage, states adopted a variety of approaches. The 2019 payment notice broadened states' options in implementing the ACA.

Information Cost, Memory Length and Market Instability.

In this article, we study the instability of a stock market with a modified version of Diks and Dindo's (2008) model where the market is characterized by nonlinear interactions between informed traders and uninformed traders. In the interaction of heterogeneous agents, we replace the replicator dynamics for the fractions by logistic strategy switching. This modification makes the model more suitable for describing realistic price dynamics, as well as more robust with respect to parameter changes. One goal o...

The neural bases of price estimation: Effects of size and precision of the estimate.

People are often confronted with the need of estimating the market price of goods. An important question is how people estimate prices, given the variability of products and prices available. Using event-related fMRI, we investigated how numerical processing modulates the neural bases of retail price estimation by focusing on two numerical dimensions: the size and precision of the estimates. Participants were presented with several product labels and made market price estimates for those products. Measures ...

Marketplaces, Markets, and Market Design.

Marketplaces are often small parts of large markets, and both markets and marketplaces come in many varieties. Market design seeks to understand what marketplaces must accomplish to enable different kinds of markets. Marketplaces can have varying degrees of success, and there can be marketplace failures. I’ll discuss labor markets like the market for new economists, and also markets for new lawyers and doctors that have suffered from the unraveling of appointment dates to well before employment begins. Ma...

Crop Protection Discovery - Is Being the First Best?

Current crop protection chemicals span an array of chemistry classes and modes of action. Typically, within each chemistry class there are multiple chemically distinct active ingredients competing with each other for market position. In this competition, the first product to market in a new class or mode of action may or may not have an advantage depending on a number of parameters including relative efficacy against the target pests, pest resistance, regulatory pressures, synthetic complexity, and marketin...

Bridging the gap: Optimized fabrication of robust titania nanostructures on complex implant geometries towards clinical translation.

Electrochemically anodized titanium surfaces with titania nanostructures (TNS; nanopores, nanotubes, etc.) have been widely applied as therapeutic bone/dental implant modifications. Despite the numerous advancements in the field of electrochemical anodization (EA), in terms of translation into the current implant market, research gaps in this domain include the lack of fabrication optimization, performed on a substrate of conventional implant surface/geometry, and inadequate mechanical stability. In the cur...

The Common Pharmaceutical Market of the Eurasian Economic Union: A Regulatory Review.

According to the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union, a common pharmaceutical market was supposed to become operational on January 1, 2016. Nevertheless, the responsible parties did not meet the deadline. Although a majority of the draft guidelines regulating this process were already known in 2014 and 2015, the anticipated process itself caused anxiety among representatives of the foreign pharma industry, who tried to prepare for coming challenges. Among other possible issues, the ambiguity of transition...

"Do I look fat?" Self-perceived body weight and labor market outcomes.

Research reporting that greater body weight is associated with lower wages and employment, particularly among women, focuses on how employers perceive workers. In contrast, we examine whether workers' own perceptions of body weight influence labor market outcomes. Numerous studies find that misperception of body weight influences health behaviors and health, both mental and physical. For example, anorexia nervosa involves the over-perception of weight and raises the risk of cardiovascular disease. Do the he...

Orphan drugs: trends and issues in drug development.

Research in rare diseases has contributed substantially toward the current understanding in the pathophysiology of the common diseases. However, medical needs of patients with rare diseases have always been neglected by the society and pharmaceutical industries based on their small numbers and unprofitability. The Orphan Drug Act (1983) was the first serious attempt to address the unmet medical needs for patients with rare diseases and to provide impetus for the pharmaceutical industry to promote orphan dru...

Expanding Enrollment Without the Individual Mandate: Options to Bring More People into the Individual Market.

Recent changes to the Affordable Care Act, including elimination of the individual mandate penalty, the halting of federal payments for cost-sharing reductions, and expanded access to short-term plans, may reduce enrollment in the individual market.

Impact and recovery process of mini flash crashes: An empirical study.

In an Ultrafast Extreme Event (or Mini Flash Crash), the price of a traded stock increases or decreases strongly within milliseconds. We present a detailed study of Ultrafast Extreme Events in stock market data. In contrast to popular belief, our analysis suggests that most of the Ultrafast Extreme Events are not necessarily due to feedbacks in High Frequency Trading: In at least 60 percent of the observed Ultrafast Extreme Events, the largest fraction of the price change is due to a single market order. In...

The purpose of this study was to quantify relationships between stuttering and labor market outcomes, determine if outcomes differ by gender, and explain the earnings difference between people who stutter and people who do not stutter.

Quantitative market survey of non-woody plants sold at Kariakoo Market in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

In Tanzania, traditional medicine plays a significant role in health care and local economies based on the harvesting, trade and sale of medicinal plant products. The majority of this plant material is said to originate from wild sources, and both traditional healers and vendors are concerned about the increasing scarcity of certain species.

Sickness absence in a re-employment program as a predictor of labor market attachment among long-term unemployed individuals: A 6-year cohort study in Finland.

Objectives We examined whether sickness absence during participation in a state subsidized re-employment program among long-term unemployed people was associated with subsequent labor market attachment. Methods We linked 18 944 long-term unemployed participants (aged 18-60 years) of a six-month subsidized re-employment program in Finland to their records of sickness absence during the program and labor market status after the program. We used the latent class growth model to identify labor market attachment...

Confirmatory versus explorative endpoint analysis: Decision-making on the basis of evidence available from market authorization and early benefit assessment for oncology drugs.

The early benefit assessment of pharmaceuticals in Germany and their preceding market authorization pursue different objectives. This is reflected by the inclusion of varying confirmatory endpoints within the evaluation of oncology drugs in early benefit assessment versus market authorization, with both relying on the same evidence. Data from assessments up to July 2015 are used to estimate the impact of explorative in comparison to confirmatory endpoints on market authorization and early benefit assessment...
