Pricing of monoclonal antibody therapies: higher if used for cancer?

The rising prices of specialty drugs have prompted a debate about how medications are priced. With the average price of cancer drugs doubling in the last decade, the unsustainability of drug prices is especially concerning in oncology and hematology. The objective of this study was to compare the prices of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) approved in the last 20 years by the FDA across disease states.

News in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

For the first time, the european guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) have been updated by the ILCOR in december 2017. If new data and findings are available, these guidelines can also be updated outside the 5-year cycle. Thus, it is now recommended that, depending on the level of training of the layer, a chest-compression-only CPR or in combination with ventilation should be done. The important function of the dispatchers in the context of telephone or dispatcher-assisted CPR is emphasized b...

Killing U.S. Slowly: Curing the Epidemic Rise of Cancer Drug Prices.

In August 2015, more than 110 U.S. oncologists published an article detailing the deleterious effects of rising cancer drugs prices and calling for numerous reforms to our prescription drug system. These prices are the result of decades of political maneuvering; they reflect the way our country has chosen to pay for healthcare, to foster and reward innovation, and to promote a national free market system. While these choices have resulted in immense profits for pharmaceutical companies—and subsidized the ...

The guidelines for the diagnosis and management of multiple myeloma in China (2017 revision).

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a clonal plasma cell malignancy, mainly in elderly people and still incurable at present. In the ear of novel agents and sensitive laboratory exams, the diagnosis and treatment of MM have been significantly improved. Chinese MM guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment were updated every two years according to the progression of international and domestic research and clinical studies. In this version, we updated the response criteria and new combination regimens in newly diagnosed...

Predictability of machine learning techniques to forecast the trends of market index prices: Hypothesis testing for the Korean stock markets.

The prediction of the trends of stocks and index prices is one of the important issues to market participants. Investors have set trading or fiscal strategies based on the trends, and considerable research in various academic fields has been studied to forecast financial markets. This study predicts the trends of the Korea Composite Stock Price Index 200 (KOSPI 200) prices using nonparametric machine learning models: artificial neural network, support vector machines with polynomial and radial basis functio...

White House Report on Drug Prices Is a Detailed Road Map: Price-Lowering Ideas Generated, Some Already in Motion.

White House report on drug prices is a detailed road map.

The Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology's guidelines for education and training: An executive summary of the 2016/2017 revision.

The Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP, Division 14 of the American Psychological Association [APA]) maintains Guidelines for Education and Training to provide guidance for the training of industrial-organizational (I-O) psychologists. The 2016/2017 revision combines separate documents for master's- and doctoral-level training into one document, because the competencies required for each degree are not very different. Instead, the degrees differ in breadth and depth. The updated Guid...

Patient Awareness of Local Drug Price Variation and the Factors That Influence Pharmacy Choice: A Cross-sectional Survey Study.

Background: High out-of-pocket drug expenditures are increasingly common in dermatology. Patients may not be aware that prices vary among pharmacies and consequently may not shop for the lowest cost. Objective: To determine what factors influence pharmacy choice and the effect of providing local prescription prices on pharmacy selection. We hypothesized that patients do not "shop around" due to lack of knowledge of price variation and would choose a pharmacy based on costs if educated on price disparity. Me...

iPSC Reprogramming Is Not Just an Open and Shut Case.

What exactly happens to chromatin as cells undergo an identity change? In this issue of Cell Stem Cell, Li et al. (2017) and Knaupp et al. (2017) offer new insights by mapping in exquisite detail chromatin accessibility dynamics as mouse embryonic fibroblasts are reprogrammed into induced pluripotent stem cells.

National Health Expenditure Projections, 2017-26: Despite Uncertainty, Fundamentals Primarily Drive Spending Growth.

Under current law, national health spending is projected to grow 5.5 percent annually on average in 2017-26 and to represent 19.7 percent of the economy in 2026. Projected national health spending and enrollment growth over the next decade is largely driven by fundamental economic and demographic factors: changes in projected income growth, increases in prices for medical goods and services, and enrollment shifts from private health insurance to Medicare that are related to the aging of the population. Th...

Thresholds for decision-making: informing the cost-effectiveness and affordability of rotavirus vaccines in Malaysia.

Cost-effectiveness thresholds (CETs) based on the Commission on Macroeconomics and Health (CMH) are extensively used in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) lacking locally defined CETs. These thresholds were originally intended for global and regional prioritization, and do not reflect local context or affordability at the national level, so their value for informing resource allocation decisions has been questioned. Using these thresholds, rotavirus vaccines are widely regarded as cost-effective inter...

Religion and Suicide: New Findings.

PsycINFO, MEDLINE, SocINDEX, and CINAHL databases were searched for articles on religion and suicide published between 2008 and 2017. Epidemiological data on suicidality and ris...

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2017 Guidelines for Prevention of Surgical Site Infections: Review and Relevant Recommendations.

The associated patient morbidity and resource-intensive nature of managing surgical site infections (SSI) has focused attention toward not only improving treatment protocols but also enhancing preventative measures. The purpose of this review was to summarize the relevant updated CDC guidelines for the prevention of SSI that were released in 2017. The CDC recommends the integration of the guidelines for improvement in quality metrics, reportable outcomes, and patient safety.

Seeds of Destruction: New Mechanistic Insights into the Role of Apolipoprotein E4 in Alzheimer's Disease.

Apolipoprotein E4 (apoE4) is the strongest genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. Despite nearly 25 years of research, the mechanism by which apoE4 confers increased risk for Alzheimer's disease remains enigmatic. In this issue of Neuron, Liu et al. (2017) and Huynh et al. (2017) shed new light on this important question.

The Next Step Forward in Ubiquitin-Specific Protease 7 Selective Inhibition.

Ubiquitin-specific protease 7 is a validated anticancer target; thus, selective USP7 inhibitors are of great interest. In this issue of Cell Chemical Biology, Lamberto et al. (2017) and Pozhidaeva et al. (2017) report important insights into the structural inhibitor-enzyme interplay, lighting the way toward the development of selective inhibitors.

Uncovering inequality through multifractality of land prices: 1912 and contemporary Kyoto.

Multifractal analysis offers a number of advantages to measure spatial economic segregation and inequality, as it is free of categories and boundaries definition problems and is insensitive to some shape-preserving changes in the variable distribution. We use two datasets describing Kyoto land prices in 1912 and 2012 and derive city models from this data to show that multifractal analysis is suitable to describe the heterogeneity of land prices. We found in particular a sharp decrease in multifractality, ch...

Evaluation of the 1B Equation to Estimate Glomerular Filtration Rate in Pediatric Patients with Cancer.

The 1B equation is recommended for calculating the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in children. Since few reports have evaluated the performance of the 1B equation, we investigated the performance of estimated GFR (eGFR) equations with the blood urea nitrogen (BUN) variable for pediatric cancer patients. In total, 203 children with cancer who underwent measured GFR (mGFR) assessment were enrolled. The median (range) mGFR and eGFR calculated using the updated Schwartz equation were 118 (43-241) and 135 (34-...
