Blowing up money? The earnings penalty of smoking in the 1970s and the 21st century.

We analyze the earnings penalty of smoking among Swedish twins in two social contexts: the 1970s, when smoking was common and widely accepted and when there were relatively few tobacco laws aiming to reduce smoking; and the 2000s, when smoking had become more expensive, stigmatizing and less common, and when tobacco laws and regulations had intensified. The results show that the short-term earnings penalty of smoking was much higher in the 21st century than in the 1970s for men. For women, smokers had on av...

Invasive Pneumococcal Disease Surveillance, 1 January to 31 March 2017.

The number of notified cases of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in the first quarter of 2017 was less than the previous quarter, but greater than the number of notified cases in the first quarter of 2016. Overall, the decline in disease due to the serotypes targeted by the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (13vPCV) has been maintained across all age groups since the 13vPCV replaced the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (7vPCV) in the childhood immunisation program from July 2011 (Figure 1).

The changing landscape of naloxone availability in the United States, 2011 - 2017.

Opioid overdose deaths have been on the rise in the United States since 1999. Naloxone is a competitive opioid antagonist that rapidly reverses opioid overdose. The implementation of naloxone access laws and development of naloxone formulations that can be administered by laypersons have coincided with changes in the landscape of naloxone availability in the United States. Using data from IQVIA's National Prescription Audit we present the number of naloxone prescriptions dispensed quarterly from 2011 throug...

Proton pump inhibitors prescriptions in France: Main trends from 2006 to 2016 on French health insurance database.

We used a 1/97th representative sample of beneficiaries of the French health insurance called "échantillon généraliste des bénéficiaires" (EGB) to describe PPIs' use over time (duration of...

Application of Satellite Remote Sensing in NO Emission Control.

Tropospheric NO vertical column densities (VCDs) from ozone monitoring instrument(OMI) were analyzed to evaluate the decrease in NO emissions during two special events, 70th anniversary of the end of World War Ⅱ in 2015 and the G20 summit in 2016. Results showed a positive correlation between NO VCDs and near ground NO emissions and verified that the NO emission control policy during "12 five-year plan" were remarkably effective, with a 24.98% drop in VCDs in five years. At the early stage of "13 five-yea...

Invasive Pneumococcal Disease Surveillance, 1 April to 30 June 2017.

The number of notified cases of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in the second quarter of 2017 was greater than the previous quarter and also the second quarter of 2016. Following the July 2011 replacement of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (7vPCV) in the childhood immunisation program with the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (13vPCV), there was an initial relatively rapid decline in disease due to the additional six serotypes covered by the 13vPCV across all age groups, however more...

Isolated Fourth Nerve Palsy in Nontraumatic Tentorial Hemorrhage.

A 46-year-old woman being treated with warfarin for antiphospholipid antibody syndrome experienced a rise in international normalized ratio (INR) to 5.4 and developed sudden headache and diplopia. Neuro-ophthalmologic examination disclosed a right fourth nerve palsy. Noncontrast computed tomography revealed a subdural hematoma layered along the right tentorium cerebelli, directly in the path of the nerve. With normalization of the INR, the palsy markedly improved over subsequent weeks. This is a unique case...

Effect of controlled-release fertilizer on NO emissions and tea yield from a tea field in subtropical central China.

Tea (Camellia sinensis L.), a perennial leaf-harvested crop, favors warm/humid climate and acidic/well-drained soils, and demands high nitrogen (N) fertilizer inputs which lead to significant emissions of NO. Potential mitigation options should be adopted to improve N use efficiency (NUE) and reduce environmental pollution in tea field system. A 3-year field experiment was carried out in a tea field in southern China from January 2014 to December 2016 to investigate the effect of controlled-release fertiliz...

Association of quarter milking measurements and cow-level factors in an automatic milking system.

The primary aim of this observational study, in a single herd milked using multiple automatic milking system units, was to describe associations of quarter milk yield variability and quarter peak milk flow rate with cow-level factors. Information from the current lactation of 1,549 primiparous and multiparous cows was collected from January to December 2015. Data from each individual milking used in the analysis included quarter milk yield (QMY), udder milk yield, quarter peak milk flow rate (QPMF), quarter...

Can cultural consumption increase future earnings? Exploring the economic returns to cultural capital.

Cultural consumption is often viewed as a form of embodied cultural capital which can be converted into economic rewards (e.g., earnings) because such practices increase the likelihood of moving into more advantaged social positions. However, quantitative evidence supporting this theory remains uncertain because it is often unable to rule out alternative explanations. Cultural consumption appears to influence hiring decisions in some elite firms, in both the US and the UK, but it is unclear whether these pr...
