Elementary and middle school predictors of high school drinking problems and maladaptive coping.

By ages 15-16, a subset of adolescents report problem drinking and engagement in maladaptive coping behaviors, both of which presage future alcohol use disorders. This paper reports on a test of whether these behaviors can be predicted by characteristics of those youth at ages 10-11. In a sample of 1889 adolescents measured in the spring of 5th, 6th, and 10th grade, we found that early pubertal onset, 5th grade drinking behavior, negative affect, low conscientiousness, and urgency all predicted adolescent p...

High internal phase water-in-oil emulsions stabilized by food-grade starch.

Water in oil emulsions would be prepared by silicones (SO), modified silicones (DC8500) and a food-grade stabilizer (starch 1). With increasing water contents, the emulsions turned from a liquid-like to gel-like behaviors with enhancing storage and loss modulus. When DC8500/SO was 1/17 with 10 wt% starch 1, a high internal phase emulsion can be obtained with 95 wt% water content. DC8500 and SO worked as efficient emulsifiers and possessed amphiphilic property to form emulsions with water in different ra...

Food-grade expression of an iron-containing acid urease in Bacillus subtilis.

Enzymatic degradation of urea, the precursor of carcinogenic compound ethylcarbamate in rice wine, is always attractive. In the present study, we achieved high efficient production of Bacillus paralicheniformis iron-containing urease (Bp_Urease) in B. subtilis with the food-grade expression system. After reassembly of the urease gene cluster with inserting ribosome binding site (RBS), the production was increased from 38 U/L to 187 U/L. After altering the position of ureC and co-expressing the iron transpor...

Social Status and Classroom Behavior in Math and Science during Early Adolescence.

Social status is a salient feature of the classroom peer ecology in early adolescence, yet research has not examined how it plays out within the domains of math and science. The current study investigated the behavioral profiles of cool and admired youth (n = 739, 51% female) in 5th and 6th grade math and science classes. "Cool" youth were perceived by peers as academically oriented, prosocial, and not disruptive. When grade level differences were found, they tended to favor 5th graders, such that cool ...

Parental Feeding Beliefs and Practices and Household Food Insecurity in Infancy.

Food insecurity is associated with childhood obesity possibly mediated through caregiver feeding practices and beliefs. We examined if caregiver feeding practices differed by household food security status in a diverse sample of infants. We hypothesize feeding practices differ based on food security status.

Properties of a novel carboxymethyl chitosan derived from silkworm pupa.

In this study, a carboxymethyl chitosan derived from silkworm pupa (SP-carboxymethyl chitosan) was prepared. The physical characteristics of the SP chitin, chitosan, and carboxymethyl chitosan were analyzed. The scanning electron microscopy results showed that the surfaces of the samples from SP were more uneven, with more surface fractures compared with those of the reference substance (RS). Thermal analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis showed that...

Status of research, regulations and challenges for genetically modified crops in India.

A large number of genetically modified (GM) crops, including both food and non-food crops carrying novel traits have been developed and released for commercial agriculture production. Soybean, maize, canola and cotton for the traits insect resistance and herbicide tolerance are the main crops under commercial cultivation worldwide. In addition, many other GM crops are under development and not yet released commercially. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in its report, the State of Food Security and Nu...

Regulatory status of N-alkylamide containing health products.

N-alkylamides (NAAs) are secondary metabolites occurring in more than 25 plant families. Plants containing NAAs are traditionally used in food for flavouring, tingling, pungent and saliva-enhancing properties but also to treat various diseases. NAA containing products are abundantly available on the market as food, cosmetics, medical devices and medicinal products. However, no unambiguous legal product classification is applied for these products. In this study, the different health product classes from a E...

The latent structure of spatial skill: A test of the 2 × 2 typology.

Multiple frameworks for categorizing spatial abilities exist but it has been difficult to verify them using exploratory factor analysis. The present study tested one of these frameworks-a 2 × 2 classification scheme that crossed the dimensions of static/dynamic and intrinsic/extrinsic (Uttal et al., 2013)-using confirmatory factor analysis with data on spatial performance from kindergarten (N = 251), third grade (N = 246) and sixth grade students (N = 241). For kindergarten and third grade ...

Early Fluid Overload is Associated with an Increased Risk of Non-Relapse Mortality After Ex-vivo CD34-Selected Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation.

In a recently published and validated definition of fluid overload (FO), grade ≥ 2 FO was significantly associated with an increased risk of non-relapse mortality (NRM) after unmodified and haploidentical allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) using calcineurin inhibitor-based (CNI) graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis. We evaluated the effect of FO on outcomes in 169 patients undergoing myeloablative-conditioned ex-vivo CD34+ selected allo-HCT using the same grading scale. Thirt...

Laboratory Trend in Vitamin D Status in Ireland: Dual Concerns about Low and High 25OHD.

Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) is the pre-eminent estimate of vitamin D status that we have been measuring in a hospital laboratory setting since the 1970s. We previously evaluated the trend in 25OHD results in our laboratory from 1993 to 2013. Using a time series analysis of monthly average 25OHD results the trend was modelled, and this was used to forecast monthly average 25OHD from 2014 to 2016. In this study, all 25OHD results from 2014 to 2016 were retrieved (n = 67,922) and trimmed to 40,307 re...

Penile reconstruction in a newborn following complicated circumcision: A case report.

Grade V post-circumcision penile injury is known as "total phallic loss". It is usually seen with the use of mono-polar electro-cautery for circumcision resulting in penile necrosis. We report on a newborn treated by release of the subcutaneous corporal remnant and explain why this option should be considered of choice in cautery-related Grade V injuries.

Cell pretreatment with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid for selective extraction of C-phycocyanin with food grade purity.

C-phycocyanin (C-PC) is a natural blue dye, and depending on its purity, which is measured by the ratio between the absorbance of the chromophore (A ) and the absorbance of the proteins (A ), it can be used in food (purity > 0.7), cosmetics (purity > 1.5), and therapeutic treatments (purity > 4.0). Several physical, chemical, and enzymatic methods of extraction are reported, however, few are able to extract C-PC with purity above 0.7. An innovative method of C-PC extraction with food grade purit...
