Climate-induced shifts in leaf unfolding and frost risk of European trees and shrubs.

Climate warming has advanced leaf unfolding of trees and shrubs, thus extending the growing period but potentially exposing plants to increased frost risk. The relative shifts in the timing of leaf unfolding vs. the timing and intensity of frost events determine whether frost risk changes under climate warming. Here we test whether the frost risk for unfolding leaves of 13 European tree and shrub species has changed over more than 60 years using dynamic state-space models and phenological observations from ...

The effect of the Majestro-Frost procedure on internal hip rotation during gait in patients with cerebral palsy.

Muscle imbalance is related to persistent internal hip rotation (IHR) after femoral derotation osteotomy (FDO) in cerebral palsy (CP). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the Majestro-Frost soft tissue procedure (MFP), which potentially addresses muscle imbalance, on IHR in CP patients during walking.

High-deductible Health Plan Enrollment Among Adults Aged 18-64 With Employment-based Insurance Coverage.

High-deductible health plans (HDHPs) are health insurance policies with higher deductibles than traditional insurance plans. Individuals with HDHPs pay lower monthly insurance premiums but pay more out of pocket for medical expenses until their deductible is met. An HDHP may be used with or without a health savings account (HSA). An HSA allows pretax income to be saved to help pay for the higher costs associated with an HDHP (1). This report examines enrollment among adults aged 18-64 with employmentbased p...

Spring frost risk for regional apple production under a warmer climate.

Spring frosts, as experienced in Europe in April 2016 and 2017, pose a considerable risk to agricultural production, with the potential to cause significant damages to agricultural yields. Meteorological blocking events (stable high-pressure systems) have been shown to be one of the factors that trigger cold spells in spring. While current knowledge does not allow for drawing conclusions as to any change in future frequency and duration of blocking episodes due to climate change, the combination of their st...

Self-Perceived Poor/Fair Health, Frequent Mental Distress, and Health Insurance Status Among Working-Aged US Adults.

We examined associations of health insurance status with self-perceived poor/fair health and frequent mental distress (FMD) among working-aged US adults from 42 states and the District of Columbia using data from the 2014 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. After multiple-variable adjustment, compared with adequately insured adults, underinsured and never insured adults were 39% and 59% more likely to report poor/fair health, respectively, and 38% more likely to report FMD. Compared with working-age...

Rethinking the Clinically Based Thresholds of TransCelerate BioPharma for Risk-Based Monitoring.

The quality of data from clinical trials has received a great deal of attention in recent years. Of central importance is the need to protect the well-being of study participants and maintain the integrity of final analysis results. However, traditional approaches to assess data quality have come under increased scrutiny as providing little benefit for the substantial cost. Numerous regulatory guidance documents and industry position papers have described risk-based approaches to identify quality and safety...

A Cooperative Search and Coverage Algorithm with Controllable Revisit and Connectivity Maintenance for Multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.

In this paper, we mainly study a cooperative search and coverage algorithm for a given bounded rectangle region, which contains several unknown stationary targets, by a team of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with non-ideal sensors and limited communication ranges. Our goal is to minimize the search time, while gathering more information about the environment and finding more targets. For this purpose, a novel cooperative search and coverage algorithm with controllable revisit mechanism is presented. Firstl...

Statistical Methodology of the National Immunization Survey, 2005-2014.

This report describes the methods used in this family of surveys during the 2005-2014 period.

Effects of Medicare coverage for the chronically ill on health insurance, utilization, and mortality: Evidence from coverage expansions affecting people with end-stage renal disease.

I study the effect of the 1973 expansions of Medicare coverage among individuals with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on insurance coverage, health care utilization, and mortality. I find that the expansions increased insurance coverage by between 22 and 30 percentage points, in models that include trends in age, with the increase explained by Medicare coverage, and increased physician visits by 25-35 percent. These expansions also decreased mortality due to kidney disease in the under 65 population by betwe...

An Update on Osteomyelitis Treatment in a Pycnodysostosis Patient.

The aims of the present study were to discuss the demographic distribution and clinical characteristics of patients with pycnodysostosis (PYCD) and the onset of osteomyelitis and its treatment using a literature review. The authors also report on an update of treatment of mandibular osteomyelitis in a patient with PYCD using a buccal fat pad (BFP) as a free graft.

Polymorphism of floral type gene Cly1 and its association with thermal stress in barley.

Cleistogamy refers to a type of sexual breeding system with closed flowers. Cleistogamous flowers shed their pollen before flower opening, which leads to autogamy. Two SNPs in the open reading frame region of the Cly1 gene are associated with floral type. In the present study, we investigated the floral type of 436 barley accessions. Molecular markers were developed to genotype these barley accessions based on the two SNPs in the Cly1 gene region. The molecular markers explained floral type in 90% of the ac...

Association between vaccination coverage decline and influenza incidence rise among Italian elderly.

After a peak of 68.3% during the 2005-06 season, influenza vaccine coverage among Italian elderly showed an unprecedented, prolonged decline. According to the National surveillance network, the vaccination coverage was ≤50% during two of the last three seasons (2014-17). In parallel, influenza-like illness (ILI) rates increased from 2.71% in the triennium 2005-08, to 4.24% in the last triennium. A significant association was found between ILI rise and vaccine coverage decline (P = 0.036), and according to...

Coverage For Self-Employed And Others Without Employer Offers Increased After 2014.

Little is known about how the Affordable Care Act might have differentially affected insurance coverage for self-employed workers, wage earners with and without offers of employer-sponsored insurance, and people not employed. We found that the self-employed and wage earners without employer coverage offers had coverage gains equal to or greater than those of people not employed.

Coverage of Hand Defects with Exposed Tendons: The Use of Dermal Regeneration Template.

Soft tissue defects associated with exposed tendon pose difficult reconstructive problems because of tendon adhesions, poor range of motion, poor cosmetic appearance, and donor site morbidity. Dermal regeneration template is a skin substitute widely used in reconstructive surgery, including the occasional coverage of tendons. However, postoperative functionality of the tendons has not been well documented. We report a case of using dermal regeneration template for soft tissue reconstruction overlying tendon...

Measuring individual-level needle and syringe coverage among people who inject drugs in Myanmar.

Myanmar has prioritised people who inject drugs (PWID) as a key population for HIV mitigation efforts, with targets for needle and syringe distribution set at a population level. However, individual-level coverage, defined as the percentage of an individual's injecting episodes covered by a sterile syringe, is a more sensitive measure of intervention coverage. We sought to examine individual-level coverage in a sample of PWID in Myanmar.

Sequana Coverage: Detection and Characterization of Genomic Variations using Running Median and Mixture Models.

In addition to mapping quality information, the Genome coverage contains valuable biological information like the presence of repetitive regions, deleted genes or copy number variations. It is essential to take into consideration atypical regions, trends (e.g., origin of replication) or known and unknown biases that influence coverage. It is also important that reported events have robust statistics (e.g. z-score) associated with their detections as well as precise location.
