A Rapid Method for Modeling a Variable Cycle Engine.

The variable cycle engines (VCE) that combine the advantages of turbofan and turbojet engines, are widely considered to be the next generation aircraft engines. However, developing VCE requires high costs. Thus, it is essential to build a mathematical model when developing an aircraft engine, which may avoid a large number of real tests and reduce the cost dramatically. Modeling is also crucial in control law development. In this article, based on a graphical simulation environment, a rapid method for model...

On the feasibility of measuring physiologic and self-reported sleep disturbance by aircraft noise on a national scale: A pilot study around Atlanta airport.

Aircraft noise can disturb sleep and impair recuperation. Research is needed to develop exposure-response relationships that are representative of noise-exposed communities and can be used to inform noise mitigation policy in the United States. For a national field study on physiologic response to aircraft noise during sleep to be feasible, an inexpensive yet sound study methodology is needed. In the pilot study presented here, the methodology of using electrocardiography and actigraphy to monitor sleep was...

Evolving public views on the value of one's DNA and expectations for genomic database governance: Results from a national survey.

We report results from a large survey of public attitudes regarding genomic database governance. Prior surveys focused on the context of academic-sponsored biobanks, framing data provision as altruistic donation; our survey is designed to reflect four growing trends: genomic databases are found across many sectors; they are used for more than academic biomedical research; their value is reflected in corporate transactions; and additional related privacy risks are coming to light. To examine how attitudes ma...

Stock Market Prediction Using Optimized Deep-ConvLSTM Model.

Stock market prediction acts as a challenging area for the investors for obtaining the profits in the financial markets. A greater number of models used in stock market forecasting is not capable of providing an accurate prediction. This article proposes a stock market prediction system that effectively predicts the state of the stock market. The deep convolutional long short-term memory (Deep-ConvLSTM) model acts as the prediction module, which is trained by using the proposed Rider-based monarch butterfly...

The ship recycling market in Brazil - The Amazon potential.

Despite the considerable Brazilian coastline and vast water transportation cargo and passenger capacity, Brazil currently does not have a satisfactory amount of research aimed at ship recycling markets, especially in the Amazon region. This study aims to characterize this market in Brazil through research and data filtering related to national vessel fleets. Fleet data were obtained from the National Agency of Waterway Transportation (ANTAQ). Quantitative spatialization of the fleet was based on geostatisti...

A comparison of frequency of alcohol and marijuana use using short message service surveying and survey questionnaires among homeless youth.

: There are several benefits to using short message service surveying (SMS) to gather data on substance use from homeless youth, including capturing data "in the moment" and verifying the timing of one behavior relative to another. Though SMS is a valuable data collection tool with highly mobile populations that otherwise are difficult to longitudinally sample, the reliability of SMS compared with surveys is largely unknown with homeless youth. Examining the reliability of SMS is important because these dat...

Using virtual reality and thermal imagery to improve statistical modelling of vulnerable and protected species.

Biodiversity loss and sparse observational data mean that critical conservation decisions may be based on little to no information. Emerging technologies, such as airborne thermal imaging and virtual reality, may facilitate species monitoring and improve predictions of species distribution. Here we combined these two technologies to predict the distribution of koalas, specialized arboreal foliovores facing population declines in many parts of eastern Australia. For a study area in southeast Australia, we co...

Quantifying aircraft emissions of Shanghai Pudong International Airport with aircraft ground operational data.

The air traffic growth at Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) has attracted much concern over the potential impacts on local air quality and human health; however, the emission contributions due to aircraft activities, impact on air quality and health effects remain unclear. In this study, the ground operational data derived from the Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) dataset are newly utilized to obtain the PVG-specific emission parameters of 10 distinct aircraft-engine ...

A national survey of videolaryngoscopes and alternative intubation devices in Hungary.

Videolaryngoscopy (VL) as a new airway management technique has evolved in recent decades, and a large number of videolaryngoscopes are now available on the market. Most recent major guidelines already recommend the immediate availability and use of VL in difficult airway management scenarios. However, national data on the availability of VL, introduction into practice and patterns of use are rarely published. Therefore, the current study aimed to provide data on VL in Hungary.

Global Health Education and Mediatization of Care in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica has become a destination for global health education courses, while funding for global health has increased dramatically over the past thirty years. An examination of one Costa Rican group's efforts to market humanitarian discourses, focusing on website design, provides a window into the workings of global health education and details the sometimes-uncomfortable position of non-US health professionals in educational programming. This contributes to theorizations of the intersection of mediatizati...

When the market drives you crazy: Stock market returns and fatal car accidents.

This paper provides evidence that daily fluctuations in the stock market have important - and hitherto neglected - spillover effects on fatal car accidents. Using the universe of fatal car accidents in the United States from 1990 to 2015, we find that a one standard deviation reduction in daily stock market returns is associated with a 0.6% increase in fatal car accidents that happen after the stock market opening. A battery of falsification tests supports a causal interpretation of this finding. Our result...
