Combination of bioelectrochemical systems and electrochemical capacitors: Principles, analysis and opportunities.

Bioelectrochemical systems combine electrodes and reactions driven by microorganisms for many different applications. The conversion of organic material in wastewater into electricity occurs in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The power densities produced by MFCs are still too low for application. One way of increasing their performance is to combine them with electrochemical capacitors, widely used for charge storage purposes. Capacitive MFCs, i.e. the combination of capacitors and MFCs, allow for energy harve...

Development of an AlCl-Urea Ionic Liquid for the Electroless Deposition of Aluminum on Carbon Nanotubes.

Unlike the easy electroless deposition of other metals, the deposition of aluminum can be challenging. This is because the standard reduction potential of aluminum lies outside the electrochemical window (EW) of water. Ionic liquids such as AlCl-1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (EMIC) have been used because of their wide EW. Here, we introduce a novel ionic liquid for electroless deposition of aluminum by reacting AlCl and urea, with lithium aluminum hydride (LAH) as a reducing agent. Additionally, we r...

Paper-based microfluidic aluminum-air batteries: toward next-generation miniaturized power supply.

Paper-based microfluidics (lab on paper) emerges as an innovative platform for building small-scale devices for sensing, diagnosis, and energy storage/conversions due to the power-free fluidic transport capability of paper via capillary action. Herein, we report for the first time that paper-based microfluidic concept can be employed to fabricate high-performing aluminum-air batteries, which entails the use of a thin sheet of fibrous capillary paper sandwiched between an aluminum foil anode and a catalyst c...

Hydrogen Activation and Hydrogenolysis Facilitated By Late-Transition-Metal-Aluminum Heterobimetallic Complexes.

Previously reported heterobimetallic rhodium-aluminum and iridium-aluminum alkyl complexes are shown to activate hydrogen, generating the corresponding alkane. Kinetic data indicate a mechanistic difference between the iridium- and rhodium-based systems. In both cases the transition metal is an active participant in the release of alkane from the aluminum center. For iridium-aluminum species, experimental mechanistic data suggest that multiple pathways occur concomitantly with each other: one being the oxid...

Aluminum and Amyloid-β in Familial Alzheimer's Disease.

Genetic predispositions associated with metabolism of the amyloid-β protein precursor underlie familial Alzheimer's disease; a form of dementia characterized by early disease onset and elevated levels of cortical amyloid-β. Human exposure to aluminum is linked to the etiology of Alzheimer's disease and recent research measured a high content of aluminum in brain tissue in familial Alzheimer's disease. To elaborate upon this finding, we have obtained brain tissues from a Colombian cohort of donors with fam...

Evolving public views on the value of one's DNA and expectations for genomic database governance: Results from a national survey.

We report results from a large survey of public attitudes regarding genomic database governance. Prior surveys focused on the context of academic-sponsored biobanks, framing data provision as altruistic donation; our survey is designed to reflect four growing trends: genomic databases are found across many sectors; they are used for more than academic biomedical research; their value is reflected in corporate transactions; and additional related privacy risks are coming to light. To examine how attitudes ma...

A comparison of frequency of alcohol and marijuana use using short message service surveying and survey questionnaires among homeless youth.

: There are several benefits to using short message service surveying (SMS) to gather data on substance use from homeless youth, including capturing data "in the moment" and verifying the timing of one behavior relative to another. Though SMS is a valuable data collection tool with highly mobile populations that otherwise are difficult to longitudinally sample, the reliability of SMS compared with surveys is largely unknown with homeless youth. Examining the reliability of SMS is important because these dat...

Impact of Daily Antiperspirant Use on the Systemic Aluminum Exposure: An Experimental Intervention Study.

Adverse health effects such as neurotoxic and carcinogenic effects through aluminum from cosmetic products have been repeatedly discussed. The dermal uptake and impact on the systemic aluminum load is still poorly understood. Therefore, we investigated the effect of daily antiperspirant use on the systemic aluminum load under real-life conditions.

DFT Studies on the Al-Speciation and Its Structure in Aqueous Aluminum Sol Formed by Aluminum Formoacetate.

Switching On/Off Negative Capacitance in Ultrathin Ferroelectric/Dielectric Capacitors.

Ferroelectric (FE) and dielectric (DE) insulator bilayer stacks provide a promising gate for low power microelectronic devices. In order to fully realize the FE polarization switching, the DE layer must be ultrathin in the FE/DE bilayer stack. Motivated by this, this work presents the first successful fabrication and characterization of Fe/FeOx/Al2O3/Fe FE/DE bilayer capacitors using in vacuo atomic layer deposition (ALD) with a total FE/DE stack thickness < 3-4 nm. A key tuning parameter in generating the ...

Randomised comparison of two household survey modules for measuring stillbirths and neonatal deaths in five countries: the Every Newborn-INDEPTH study.

An estimated 5·1 million stillbirths and neonatal deaths occur annually. Household surveys, most notably the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS), run in more than 90 countries and are the main data source from the highest burden regions, but data-quality concerns remain. We aimed to compare two questionnaires: a full birth history module with additional questions on pregnancy losses (FBH+; the current DHS standard) and a full pregnancy history module (FPH), which collects information on all livebirths, sti...

A bis(aluminocenophane) with a short aluminum-aluminum single bond.

A bis(dicarba[2]aluminocenophane) was synthesized by reduction of a corresponding dichloro precursor with 1,3-β-diketiminate magnesium(i). The bis(aluminocenophane) is stable under an inert gas atmosphere and was characterized in solution and in the solid state. The crystal structure reveals an unusually short Al-Al single bond and two η5 coordinated cyclopentadienyl groups on each aluminum atom which are disposed in an orthogonal fashion. The aluminum bond can be oxidized and cleaved by element chlorides...

When the market drives you crazy: Stock market returns and fatal car accidents.

This paper provides evidence that daily fluctuations in the stock market have important - and hitherto neglected - spillover effects on fatal car accidents. Using the universe of fatal car accidents in the United States from 1990 to 2015, we find that a one standard deviation reduction in daily stock market returns is associated with a 0.6% increase in fatal car accidents that happen after the stock market opening. A battery of falsification tests supports a causal interpretation of this finding. Our result...
