Chemical cleaning-associated generation of dissolved organic matter and halogenated byproducts in ceramic MBR: Ozone versus hypochlorite.

This study characterized the dissolved organic matter (DOM) and byproducts generated after the exposure of activated sludge to ozone and NaClO in ceramic MBR. It was found that NaClO triggered more significant release of DOM than ozone. Proteins with the molecular weight greater than 20 kDa and humic acid like-substances were the principal components of DOM generated by NaClO, while ozone was found to effectively degrade larger biopolymers to low molecular weight substances. The results showed that more t...

Facilitation of yeast-lethal membrane protein production by detoxifying with GFP tagging.

Recombinant techniques for target protein production have been rapidly established and widely utilised in today's biological research. Nevertheless, methods for membrane protein production have yet to be developed, since membrane proteins generally tend to be expressed at low levels, easily aggregated, and/or even toxic to their host cells. Here we report that a GFP-tagging technique can be applied for the stable production of membrane proteins that are toxic to their host cells when overexpressed, paving t...

The Fight Against Antimicrobial Resistance Is Confounded by a Global Increase in Antibiotic Usage.

Antimicrobial resistance is a serious threat to global health. Despite numerous initiatives designed to curb excessive and inappropriate use of antibiotics, a recent report ( Klein et al. ( 2018 ) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. , 115 , E3463 ) finds that there was a substantial increase in global antibiotic consumption by humans from 2000 to 2015 and predicts a further 200% increase by 2030. Alarmingly, much of this growth is occurring in "last-resort" antibiotics. The study excludes the extensive use of a...

Generation of nanobubbles by ceramic membrane filters: The dependence of bubble size and zeta potential on surface coating, pore size and injected gas pressure.

Generation of gaseous nanobubbles (NBs) by simple, efficient, and scalable methods is critical for industrialization and applications of nanobubbles. Traditional generation methods mainly rely on hydrodynamic, acoustic, particle, and optical cavitation. These generation processes render issues such as high energy consumption, non-flexibility, and complexity. This research investigated the use of tubular ceramic nanofiltration membranes to generate NBs in water with air, nitrogen and oxygen gases. This syste...

Reactive Photo-Fenton ceramic membranes: Synthesis, characterization and antifouling performance.

To develop reactive and antifouling membrane filtration systems, a photo-Fenton ceramic membrane was prepared by coating goethite (α-FeOOH) catalysts on a zirconia/titania alumina membrane via a cross-linking method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to characterize α-FeOOH catalysts and the surface coating quality. The cross linker yielded stable covalent binding between catalyst and membrane under room te...

Ultralight and fire-resistant ceramic nanofibrous aerogels with temperature-invariant superelasticity.

Ultralight aerogels that are both highly resilient and compressible have been fabricated from various materials including polymer, carbon, and metal. However, it has remained a great challenge to realize high elasticity in aerogels solely based on ceramic components. We report a scalable strategy to create superelastic lamellar-structured ceramic nanofibrous aerogels (CNFAs) by combining SiO nanofibers with aluminoborosilicate matrices. This approach causes the random-deposited SiO nanofibers to assemble in...

Analysis of global stock index data during crisis period via complex network approach.

Considerable research has been done on the complex stock market, however, there is very little systematic work on the impact of crisis on global stock markets. For filling in these gaps, we propose a complex network method, which analyzes the effects of the 2008 global financial crisis on global main stock index from 2005 to 2010. Firstly, we construct three weighted networks. The physics-derived technique of minimum spanning tree is utilized to investigate the networks of three stages. Regional clustering ...

Fabrication and optical properties of Pr-doped Ba (Sn, Zr, Mg, Ta) O transparent ceramic phosphor.

To the best of our knowledge, we have successfully fabricated a novel transparent ceramic phosphor of Pr-doped Ba (Sn, Zr, Mg, Ta) O (Pr:BMT) via a high-temperature solid-state reaction method. The in-line transmittance of 59% at 650 nm was measured. The Pr:BMT ceramic phosphor can emit 650 nm red light excited by 447 nm blue light. The ceramic phosphor can still work at 383 K. The activation energy was calculated to be 0.17 eV. The efficiency of the ceramic phosphor is twice that of its powder phospho...
