The market for reproductive tourism: an analysis with special reference to Greece.

For many people, the need for parenthood remains unfulfilled due to biological reasons and a remedy for these individuals is assisted reproduction (AR). Because of widely differing and sometimes incompatible legislations around the world related to AR, there is considerable confusion across national borders. Within Europe, Greece seems to be in a comparatively favorable position because of lower restrictions and the availability of decent quality specialized medical facilities. This research is a market stu...

Individual versus superensemble forecasts of seasonal influenza outbreaks in the United States.

Recent research has produced a number of methods for forecasting seasonal influenza outbreaks. However, differences among the predicted outcomes of competing forecast methods can limit their use in decision-making. Here, we present a method for reconciling these differences using Bayesian model averaging. We generated retrospective forecasts of peak timing, peak incidence, and total incidence for seasonal influenza outbreaks in 48 states and 95 cities using 21 distinct forecast methods, and combined these i...

Fabrication and optical properties of Pr-doped Ba (Sn, Zr, Mg, Ta) O transparent ceramic phosphor.

To the best of our knowledge, we have successfully fabricated a novel transparent ceramic phosphor of Pr-doped Ba (Sn, Zr, Mg, Ta) O (Pr:BMT) via a high-temperature solid-state reaction method. The in-line transmittance of 59% at 650 nm was measured. The Pr:BMT ceramic phosphor can emit 650 nm red light excited by 447 nm blue light. The ceramic phosphor can still work at 383 K. The activation energy was calculated to be 0.17 eV. The efficiency of the ceramic phosphor is twice that of its powder phospho...

Building and strengthening capacity for cardiovascular research in Africa through technical training workshops: a report of the joint course on health research methods by the Clinical Research Education Networking and Consultancy and the Ivorian Society of Cardiology.

Africa bears a quarter of the global burden of disease but contributes less than 2% of the global research publications on health, partially due to a lack of expertise and skills to carry out scientific research. We report on a short course on research methods organised by the Clinical Research Education Networking and Consultancy (CRENC) during the third international congress of the Ivorian Cardiac Society (SICARD) in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire. Results from the pre- and post-test evaluation during this cours...

CsFe(SeO)F with S = 5/2 Cube Tile Lattice.

A layered iron selenite fluoride CsFe(SeO)F 1 was hydrothermally synthesized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies show that 1 has a trigonal ( P3̅ m1) lattice, where [Fe(SeO)F] blocks of three iron sublayers are separated by Cs cations. Within the block, only Fe(2)F and Fe(1)OF octahedra are magnetically connected via superexchange Fe(1) -F -Fe(2) pathways, giving an S = 5/2 cube tile (dice) lattice. At low magnetic field, 1 exhibits an antiferromagnetic transition at ∼130 K, where ferrimagnetic cub...

Is There a Cardiotoxicity Associated With Metallic Head Hip Prostheses? A Cohort Study in the French National Health Insurance Databases.

There are four distinguishable types of THA devices in wide use, as defined by the femoral and acetabular bearing surfaces: metal-on-polyethylene (MoP), ceramic-on-polyethylene (CoP), metal-on-metal (MoM), and ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC). Metallic head THAs (MoP and MoM) can potentially induce cardiac toxicity because cobalt species, generated at the head-neck trunnion, and in the case of MoM devices, at the articular surface as well, can be absorbed systemically. However, studies have provided inconsistent re...

Ceramic-on-Ceramic in Total Hip Replacement Revision.

The use of Ceramic-on-Ceramic (CoC) bearings in primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) is increasing and has been intensively analysed. This bearing plays a particularly relevant role in young, active patients and shows advantages over other bearings in biocompatibility, wear rate and lubrication properties. On the contrary, CoC bearings in revision THA are seldom used and scarcely analysed. The aim of this study is to systematically review the available literature on CoC bearings in revision THA.

Novel dental adhesive resin with crack self-healing, antimicrobial and remineralization properties.

Secondary caries at the tooth-restoration margins is a primary reason for restoration failure. Cracks at the margins lead to leakage which can trap bacteria, producing acids to cause caries. To date, there has been no report on developing an adhesive resin that has self-healing, antibacterial and remineralizing capabilities. The objectives of this study were to: (1) develop the first self-healing adhesive with antimicrobial and remineralizing capabilities, and (2) investigate the effects of incorporating mi...

Comparison of cementless total hip arthroplasty survivorship between metal-on-highly cross-linked polyethylene and ceramic-on-ceramic bearings: A case control study with a 5-9-year follow-up.

Currently, there is a lack of evidence on the medium-term follow-up of cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) using metal-on highly cross-linked polyethylene bearing (MoXPE), ceramic on ceramic bearing (CoC) at more than 5 years follow-up. Therefore, we performed a case control study to: 1) compare the incidence rate of osteolysis, 2) compare the longevity for both types of THAs, and 3) to evaluate the wear rate of MoXPE THAs.
