How does capital structure change product-market competitiveness? Evidence from Chinese firms.

Finance research shows capital structure has an important effect on the product-market competitiveness of firms. Our paper documents an asymmetric effect of capital structure on firms' competitiveness in a sample of Chinese firms. Firms whose capital structure is characterized by a low leverage but rapid leverage growth has a dominant position in their product market. The industry average leverage ratio is also a critical factor influencing firms' competitiveness. High debt levels hinder firms' competitiven...

Genetic diversity of porcine circovirus type 2 in China between 1999-2017.

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2), is linked to PCV-2 associated disease, which has caused considerable economic loss in the swine industry. Here, we report the genetic diversity of PCV-2 in China. A total of 74 Chinese PCV-2 strains sequenced between 1999 and 2017 were studied. Based on the ORF2 and complete genomes, we found that apart from the PCV-2a, PCV-2b, and PCV-2d genotypes, two unstable recombination genotypes also exist, referred to as IM1 and IM2 genotypes. We found that the patterns of PCV-2 ge...

Suggestion to construction of regulations from historical evolution of Chinese medicine processing legislation.

Chinese medicine is the treasure of China. It has been the safe guard of health in China for thousands of years. Processing of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is an important process of removing crude extracts from natural products and achieving pharmacological properties of TCM. The connotation and norms of herbal preparation in the past dynasties have been improved gradually, and have been included in the code system since the Tang Dynasty. The process of legislative evolution is closely related to the...

It is necessary to prioritize recycling applications to contribute to the marble industry, ecology, and economy. In the current study, it is seen that the waste marble is used extensively in concrete instead of aggregate and cement. Thus, the aim involved minimizing the harmful effects of waste marble on the environment. Furthermore, the effects of waste marble on the strength of concrete were investigated. Recycling options for waste marble were explored in detail based on a review of previous studies. The...

Global, regional, and national age-sex-specific mortality for 282 causes of death in 195 countries and territories, 1980-2017: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017.

Global development goals increasingly rely on country-specific estimates for benchmarking a nation's progress. To meet this need, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2016 estimated global, regional, national, and, for selected locations, subnational cause-specific mortality beginning in the year 1980. Here we report an update to that study, making use of newly available data and improved methods. GBD 2017 provides a comprehensive assessment of cause-specific mortality for 2...

A study on the potential use of paper sludge ash in concrete with glass aggregate.

This short communication focuses on the potential use of paper sludge ash, a waste product of the paper making industry, as an innovative binder partially replacing cement in concrete with glass aggregate. After preliminary testing using binary or ternary CEM-II mixes with paper sludge ash/pulverised fly ash, a suitable mix for concrete with glass aggregate was identified. Concrete mixes with partial or full natural sand replacement by waste glass aggregate were then produced and showed appropriate strength...

Grading standard of processed Curcumae Radix.

As one of the three pillars of Chinese medicine industry, traditional Chinese medicines prepared in ready-to-use forms are important raw materials for clinical medication and production of Chinese patent drugs. By considering the literature of Curcumae Radix, a multi-source Chinese herb and the situation of market investigation, the modern evaluation method based on traditional grading was introduced for comprehensive evaluation of the processed Curcumae Radix. The correlation between traditional grading me...

Time-varying law of rebar corrosion rate in fly ash concrete.

Whereas steel bar corrosion is the main cause for durability deterioration of existing reinforced concrete structures, it is important to understand the steel bar corrosion in concrete and predict the corrosion process in a sufficient way. In this paper, the corrosion process of rebar in ordinary concrete and three types of fly ash concrete specimens casted with 15%, 30% and 45% fly ash replacement ratios by mass under constant climate conditions were investigated. Meanwhile, the advanced digital video micr...

Environmental performance of ordinary and new generation concrete structures-a comparative analysis.

The development of concrete technology results in a new generation of cement-based concrete such as high-performance concrete, self-compacting concrete and high-performance, self-compacting concrete. These concretes are characterised by better parameters not only in terms of strength and durability but also rheology of the mixtures. Obtaining such properties requires the adoption of a different composition and proportion of ingredients than ordinary concrete. The greater share of cement in these concretes c...

The Common Pharmaceutical Market of the Eurasian Economic Union: A Regulatory Review.

According to the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union, a common pharmaceutical market was supposed to become operational on January 1, 2016. Nevertheless, the responsible parties did not meet the deadline. Although a majority of the draft guidelines regulating this process were already known in 2014 and 2015, the anticipated process itself caused anxiety among representatives of the foreign pharma industry, who tried to prepare for coming challenges. Among other possible issues, the ambiguity of transition...

Internationalization of Traditional/Complementary Medicine products: market entry as medicine.

Internationalization of Traditional/Complementary Medicine (T&CM) products is important for initiating and sustaining developments in this field. Particularly for traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs), the global market continues to expand due to an interest in the potential clinical benefits of traditional approaches that are largely considered lower risk and lower cost than many conventional treatments. While the benefits of internationalization hold clear advantages for the business of T&CM products, keep...

Board meeting frequency and firm performance: examining the nexus in Nigerian deposit money banks.

The main aim of this study is to examine the impact of board meeting frequency on firm performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria. Data used for the study were spawned from annual reports of the deposit money banks listed on Nigeria stock exchange (NSE) market. We employed a panel regression to test the significant association amid variables. Our main empirical result shows a positive association amid board meeting frequency and firm performance. Although, our findings also show that board size was posit...

Long-term neutron radiation levels in distressed concrete biological shielding walls.

Neutron radiation can deteriorate mechanical properties of the concrete materials, and thus it is questionable that neutron transport properties of concrete can remain unchanged during the life span of biological shielding walls. one-speed neutron diffusion equation and heat conduction equation were used as governing equations for prediction of neutron radiation and thermal field in concrete, respectively. The potential variations of transport properties due to neutron radiation and elevated temperature wer...

Diffusion of water in industrial cement and concrete.

We propose a deuterium diffusion tracer approach to measure diffusion coefficient in the case of very short NMR relaxation times, too short for NMR pulsed field gradient sequences (T or T below 1 ms). We also treat the case of porous media containing metallic fibers (such as reinforced concrete) strongly disturbing the magnetic field, and the case of inhomogeneous porous media containing large non porous granulates. For the latter, we propose a hollow geometry maximizing the investigated volume and minimi...

Measuring progress from 1990 to 2017 and projecting attainment to 2030 of the health-related Sustainable Development Goals for 195 countries and territories: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017.

Efforts to establish the 2015 baseline and monitor early implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlight both great potential for and threats to improving health by 2030. To fully deliver on the SDG aim of "leaving no one behind", it is increasingly important to examine the health-related SDGs beyond national-level estimates. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2017), we measured progress on 41 of 52 health-related SDG indicators and e...

Global, regional, and national incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability for 354 diseases and injuries for 195 countries and territories, 1990-2017: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017.

The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2017) includes a comprehensive assessment of incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability (YLDs) for 354 causes in 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2017. Previous GBD studies have shown how the decline of mortality rates from 1990 to 2016 has led to an increase in life expectancy, an ageing global population, and an expansion of the non-fatal burden of disease and injury. These studies have also shown how a substan...

Global, regional, and national comparative risk assessment of 84 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or clusters of risks for 195 countries and territories, 1990-2017: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017.

The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 comparative risk assessment (CRA) is a comprehensive approach to risk factor quantification that offers a useful tool for synthesising evidence on risks and risk-outcome associations. With each annual GBD study, we update the GBD CRA to incorporate improved methods, new risks and risk-outcome pairs, and new data on risk exposure levels and risk-outcome associations.

Global, regional, and national age-sex-specific mortality and life expectancy, 1950-2017: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017.

Assessments of age-specific mortality and life expectancy have been done by the UN Population Division, Department of Economics and Social Affairs (UNPOP), the United States Census Bureau, WHO, and as part of previous iterations of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD). Previous iterations of the GBD used population estimates from UNPOP, which were not derived in a way that was internally consistent with the estimates of the numbers of deaths in the GBD. The present iteration...

Effect of Vietnamese Fly Ash on Selected Physical Properties, Durability and Probability of Corrosion of Steel in Concrete.

Vietnamese fly ash was used as a partial replacement for ordinary Portland cement in the proportions of 10%, 20% and 40%, while the water to cementitious ratios were kept constant at 0.42, 0.5 and 0.55, respectively, for three groups. The compressive strengths of all mixes were determined up to 90 days. The acid resistance of fly ash concrete was examined by the mass loss and compressive strength loss of 100 × 100 × 100 mm³ cubes immersed in a 10% H₂SO₄ solution. The probability of steel corrosion in...

Relationship between concentration ratio and Herfindahl-Hirschman index: A re-examination based on majorization theory.

While the two most widely used measures of market (industrial) concentration, the -firm concentration ratio and the Herfindahl-Hirschman index , have no precise functional relationship, they can be related by means of boundary formulations. Such bounds and potential relationships, which have been considered in some earlier reported studies, are being re-examined, corrected, and reformulated in this paper. The underlying analysis uses a different approach based on majorization theory and the results are sup...

Hollow particles templated from Pickering emulsion with high thermal stability and solvent resistance: Young investigator perspective.

Hollow particles have been used in a variety of applications and many methods have been developed. Hollow particles templated from Pickering emulsions due to nanoparticle adsorption at the oil-water interface usually suffer from the collapsed morphologies and low thermal and solvent stability and enhancement of the shell can significantly improve the hollow particle performance.

Humanitarianism from Below: Sowa Rigpa, the Traditional Pharmaceutical Industry, and Global Health.

In this article I explore, for the first time, the relationship between Sowa Rigpa (Tibetan medicine) and global health, tracing "the global" in ethical discourses and pharmaceutical innovation practices of Tibetan medical practitioners. I argue that Sowa Rigpa's engagement with the world and its global health activities outside China can be understood as a form of "humanitarianism from below," while its industrialization in China aligns with global health in different ways. In providing new insights into r...
