How does capital structure change product-market competitiveness? Evidence from Chinese firms.

Finance research shows capital structure has an important effect on the product-market competitiveness of firms. Our paper documents an asymmetric effect of capital structure on firms' competitiveness in a sample of Chinese firms. Firms whose capital structure is characterized by a low leverage but rapid leverage growth has a dominant position in their product market. The industry average leverage ratio is also a critical factor influencing firms' competitiveness. High debt levels hinder firms' competitiven...

Genetic diversity of porcine circovirus type 2 in China between 1999-2017.

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2), is linked to PCV-2 associated disease, which has caused considerable economic loss in the swine industry. Here, we report the genetic diversity of PCV-2 in China. A total of 74 Chinese PCV-2 strains sequenced between 1999 and 2017 were studied. Based on the ORF2 and complete genomes, we found that apart from the PCV-2a, PCV-2b, and PCV-2d genotypes, two unstable recombination genotypes also exist, referred to as IM1 and IM2 genotypes. We found that the patterns of PCV-2 ge...

Application of Gelatin Zymography in Nanotoxicity Research.

Gelatin zymography is a relatively simple, inexpensive, and powerful technique to detect proteolytic enzymes capable of degrading gelatin from various biological sources. It has been used particularly to detect the two members of the matrix metalloproteinase family, MMP-2 (gelatinase A) and MMP-9 (gelatinase B), due to their potent gelatin-degrading activity. MMP-2 and MMP-9 are also able to degrade a number of extracellular matrix molecules including type IV, V, and XI collagens, laminin, and aggrecan core...

"Solvent/non-solvent" treatment as a method for non-covalent immobilization of gelatin on the surface of poly(l-lactic acid) electrospun scaffolds.

In the present study, we report a simple and efficient method of gelatin immobilization on the surface of PLA electrospun fibers using pre-treatment with a mixture of toluene and ethanol allowing to form swelled surface layer followed by gelatin adsorption from its solution in PBS. Our results demonstrate that gelatin immobilization leads to a decrease in the water contact angle from 120° to 0°, enhances scaffold strength up to 50%, and doubles the number of adhered cells and their average area. We observ...

Grading standard of processed Curcumae Radix.

Patient versus proxy response on global health scales: no meaningful DIFference.

Assessment of outcomes from a proxy is often substituted for the patient's self-report when the patient is unable or unwilling to report their status. Research has indicated that proxies over-report symptoms on the patient's behalf. This study aimed to quantify the extent of proxy-introduced bias on the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Global Health (PROMIS GH) scale for mental (GMH) and physical (GPH) scores.

In situ reduction of silver nanoparticles by gelatin to obtain porous silver nanoparticle/chitosan composites with enhanced antimicrobial and wound-healing activity.

The identification of materials with beneficial properties for wound healing is a major research goal. In this study, gelatin was used as a reducing agent and stabilizer to restore silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in situ, which were mixed with chitosan (CS), crosslinked with tannic acid, and then freeze-dried to obtain a new composite Gelatin/CS/Ag. Gelatin/CS/Ag has a dense pore structure with a pore size of about 100-250 μm. The pores were interconnected. The existence of AgNPs was proven by UV visible sp...

Analysis of global stock index data during crisis period via complex network approach.

Considerable research has been done on the complex stock market, however, there is very little systematic work on the impact of crisis on global stock markets. For filling in these gaps, we propose a complex network method, which analyzes the effects of the 2008 global financial crisis on global main stock index from 2005 to 2010. Firstly, we construct three weighted networks. The physics-derived technique of minimum spanning tree is utilized to investigate the networks of three stages. Regional clustering ...
