Biotherapeutics dominate the pipelines of pharmaceutical companies across the world today with products ranging from hormones, immune-modulators, monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), blood coagulation factors, enzymes and vaccines. However, they are considerably more expensive than their small molecule counterparts (pharmaceuticals) and as a result their contribution to the already unacceptably high healthcare costs in the developed economies (Europe, United States, Japan, Canada and South Korea) has been in the l...
Neutrophils form an essential part of innate immunity against infection. Cancer chemotherapy-induced neutropenia (CCIN) is a condition in which the number of neutrophils in a patient's bloodstream is decreased, leading to increased susceptibility to infection. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GCSF) has been the only approved treatment for CCIN over two decades. To date, CCIN-related infection and mortality remain a significant concern, as neutrophils generated in response to administered GCSF are func...
Patients may hold negative perceptions towards biosimilars which can create barriers to their uptake. Physicians also report uncertainty in how best to explain biosimilars. The aim of this study was to measure the effect of differently framed explanations on patients' perceptions of and willingness to change to a biosimilar in a hypothetical drug switch.
Since the introduction of the first biosimilar the discussion about their interchangeability has persisted. The body of evidence gathered for biosimilars provides reassurance that they are approved based on a rigorous comparability exercise and do not show clinically meaningful differences to their reference products. There are no data suggesting that the risk of switching to a biosimilar in terms of increased immunogenicity is greater than switching between two batches of any biologic. The key concern arou...
Childhood cancer is neglected within global health. Oxford Pediatrics Linking Oncology Research with Electives describes early outcomes following collaboration between low- and high-income paediatric surgery and oncology centres. The aim of this paper is twofold: to describe the development of a medical student-led research collaboration; and to report on the experience of Wilms' tumour (WT).
In the report "Progress Toward Global Eradication of Dracunculiasis - January 2018-June 2019," on page 979, a sentence was omitted from the first paragraph. The paragraph should have read as follows.
In response to growing concerns over high levels of physical inactivity among young people, the Active Healthy Kids Global Alliance developed a series of national Report Cards on physical activity for children and youth to advocate for the promotion of physical activity. This article provides updated evidence of the impact of the Report Cards on powering the movement to get children and youth moving globally.
Report cards on provider performance are intended to improve consumer decision-making and address information gaps in the market for quality. However, inadequate risk adjustment of report-card measures often biases comparisons across providers. We test whether going to a skilled nursing facility (SNF) with a higher star rating leads to better quality outcomes for a patient. We exploit variation over time in the distance from a patient's residential ZIP code to SNFs with different ratings to estimate the cau...
Insufficient levels of physical activity and increasing sedentary time among children and youth are being observed internationally. The purpose of this paper is to summarize findings from France's 2018 Report Card on physical activity for children and youth, and to make comparisons with its 2016 predecessor and with the Report Cards of other countries engaged in the Global Matrix 3.0.
The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) report was primarily intended as a strategy document and not a clinical guideline. However, the 2014 update moved the report towards a "practical, clinical practice-centred document", and has in many countries formed a basis for national guidelines. A possible limitation of the GINA report is its primary focus on evidence coming from randomised controlled trials, potentially leading to the omission of clinically important data coming from real-life and observational s...
Despite the considerable Brazilian coastline and vast water transportation cargo and passenger capacity, Brazil currently does not have a satisfactory amount of research aimed at ship recycling markets, especially in the Amazon region. This study aims to characterize this market in Brazil through research and data filtering related to national vessel fleets. Fleet data were obtained from the National Agency of Waterway Transportation (ANTAQ). Quantitative spatialization of the fleet was based on geostatisti...
Members of the family are large dsDNA viruses with distinctive rod-shaped nucleocapsids and circular genomes of 96-232 kbp. Nudiviruses have been identified from a diverse range of insects and crustaceans and are closely related to baculoviruses. This is a summary of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses Report on the taxonomy of the family , which is available at ictv.global/report/nudiviridae.
Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is characterized by congenital fusion of the cervical vertebrae. Due to its rarity, minimal research has been done to assess the quality and management of pain associated with this disorder. Using a large global database, the authors report a detailed analysis of the type, location, and treatment of pain in patients with KFS.

Biotechnologicals are an invaluable resource in the treatment of patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases (IRD) non-responsive or intolerant to conventional therapies. However, they are the main driver for increase in direct costs and represent a significant economic burden to healthcare systems worldwide. Since biosimilars are similar and more affordable versions of previously licenced biotechnologicals, they are expected to contribute to healthcare system sustainability and reduce inequities in treat...

Traditional nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals hold pragmatic nature with respect to their definitions, claims, purposes and marketing strategies. Their definitions are not well established worldwide. They also have different regulatory definitions and registration regulatory processes in different parts of the world. Global prevalence of nutraceuticals and cosmeceuticals is noticeably high with large market share with minimal regulation compared to traditional drugs. The global market is flooded with nutrac...
We report a rare cervical hyperlordotic deformity in a 19-year-old woman with Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy and concomitant scoliosis. After standard posterolateral instrumentation and fusion of C2-T1 and extensive soft-tissue release, her neck pain improved and unassisted maintenance of cervical alignment and horizontal gaze were preserved through an 8-year follow-up. More importantly, she exhibited reciprocal correction of compensatory global sagittal malalignment, including lumbar lordosis.

Over email a few days after the death of Daniel Callahan, cofounder of The Hastings Center and for many years its director and then president, Joseph Fins, a longtime Hastings colleague, offered this comfort: "[H]enceforth every issue of the Report is a living memorial to Dan the writer, editor, and institution builder." In the Hastings Center Report's first issue, published in June 1971, Dan stated, "To say that [the work of the Report] must be multi-disciplinary is only to say the issues [it will address]...
Kudoid myxozoans have been reported causing serious chronic problems in marine fisheries, by reducing the market value of infected fish through pathological damage to the host musculature. We report here the overall prevalence of a Kudoa species in 84/277 (30.3%) fishes from 20 different species of high commercial value captured between October 2011 and December 2013 from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) 34 commercial fishing area, near the coast of the Canary Islands (Spain). Although complex, biologic agents are key components of modern therapy in multiple disciplines, particularly oncology. However, despite the fact that biosimilars (eg, filgrastim-sndz, bevacizumab-awwb, trastuzumab-dkst, rituximab-abbs) have been approved in the United States, many clinicians are poorly informed about their unique pathway for approval. At the NCCN 2019 Annual Congress: Hematologic Malignancies, Dr. Andrew D. Zelenetz, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, outlined important issues regardin...
