High-power tunable mid-infrared fiber gas laser source by acetylene-filled hollow-core fibers.

High-power tunable pulsed and CW mid-infrared fiber gas laser sources in acetylene-filled hollow-core fibers, to the best of our knowledge, are demonstrated for the first time. By precisely tuning the wavelength of the pump source, an amplified tunable 1.5 μm diode laser, to match different absorption lines of acetylene, the laser output is step-tunable in the range of 3.09~3.21 μm with a maximum pulse average power of ~0.3 W (~0.6 μJ pulse energy) and a maximum CW power of ~0.77 W, making this system th...

Generation of wavelength- and OAM-tunable vortex beam at low threshold.

Wavelength- and OAM- tunable laser with large tunable range is the key source for the application in large capacity optical communications. In this paper, we demonstrate a wavelength- and OAM-tunable vortex laser in a 1.2 W single mode fiber coupled LD pumped Yb:phosphate laser. A z-type cavity has been used to precisely control the laser mode diameter. A thin film polarizer (TFP) is inserted to finely control the intra-cavity loss and tune the wavelength. Corresponding laser fundamental mode to pump beam r...

The mathematics of market timing.

Market timing is an investment technique that tries to continuously switch investment into assets forecast to have better returns. What is the likelihood of having a successful market timing strategy? With an emphasis on modeling simplicity, I calculate the feasible set of market timing portfolios using index mutual fund data for perfectly timed (by hindsight) all or nothing quarterly switching between two asset classes, US stocks and bonds over the time period 1993-2017. The historical optimal timing path ...

Patient versus proxy response on global health scales: no meaningful DIFference.

Assessment of outcomes from a proxy is often substituted for the patient's self-report when the patient is unable or unwilling to report their status. Research has indicated that proxies over-report symptoms on the patient's behalf. This study aimed to quantify the extent of proxy-introduced bias on the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Global Health (PROMIS GH) scale for mental (GMH) and physical (GPH) scores.

Analysis of global stock index data during crisis period via complex network approach.

Considerable research has been done on the complex stock market, however, there is very little systematic work on the impact of crisis on global stock markets. For filling in these gaps, we propose a complex network method, which analyzes the effects of the 2008 global financial crisis on global main stock index from 2005 to 2010. Firstly, we construct three weighted networks. The physics-derived technique of minimum spanning tree is utilized to investigate the networks of three stages. Regional clustering ...

Maintaining broadband gain in a Nd/Ybco-doped silica fiber amplifier via dual-laser pumping.

We report a 30 cm long Nd/Yb co-doped silica glass fiber amplifier with well-maintained broadband gain through simultaneous dual-laser pumping at 808 and 975 nm. By controlling the ratio of the pump power at 975 (P) and 808 nm (P), the emission band of Yb/Nd and the energy transfer efficiency of Nd→Yb can be well controlled; thus, a tunable broadband and flat gain in the range of 1036-1080 nm are obtained. The theoretical calculation of the energy transfer efficiency of Nd→Yb with dual-laser pumping...

Assaying RNA structure with LASER-Seq.

Chemical probing methods are crucial to our understanding of the structure and function of RNA molecules. The majority of chemical methods used to probe RNA structure report on Watson-Crick pairing, but tertiary structure parameters such as solvent accessibility can provide an additional layer of structural information, particularly in RNA-protein complexes. Herein we report the development of Light Activated Structural Examination of RNA by high-throughput sequencing, or LASER-Seq, for measuring RNA struct...

Medical oncology job satisfaction: Results of a global survey.

While physician burnout is increasingly recognized, little is known about medical oncologist job satisfaction, and the factors associated with low satisfaction. Here, we report the results of an international survey of medical oncologists.

Line-tunable Er:GGAG laser.

In this Letter, for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, a pulse and CW laser based on an Er-doped GdGaAlO (Er:GGAG) active medium emitting laser radiation at 2.8 μm are presented. With the longitudinal diode pumping, the maximal output energy of 4.9 mJ and slope efficiency of 13.5% in the pulse regime were reached. Using the birefringent MgF plate, the line tunability of Er:GGAG at several spectral bands of 2800-2822 nm, 2829-2891 nm, and 2917-2942 nm were obtained.

Management of recalcitrant epithelial ingrowth after laser in situ keratomileusis: A case report.

Surgically lifting and scraping, mitomycin C, fibrin glue, Nd:YAG laser, hydrogel ocular sealant, and amniotic membrane patch are the reported methods for treating epithelial ingrowth after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). Here we report the management of a rare case of recalcitrant epithelial ingrowth using a combined scraping/laser ablation that occurred after LASIK.

Future physician-scientists: could we catch them young? Factors influencing intrinsic and extrinsic motivation for research among first-year medical students.

The medical field is currently facing a physician-scientist shortage. One possible solution is to direct medical students towards a research oriented career. To do so, knowledge is needed on how to motivate medical students to do research. Therefore, this study examines motivation for research and identifies factors influencing intrinsic and extrinsic motivation for research among first-year medical students.

Part-time practice in healthcare: Impact on operational versus medical performance.

We explore how reliance on part-time medical staff affects operational and medical outcome performance in two general surgery departments Whereas prior research has indicated that operational performance is positively associated with medical performance, we find that heavier reliance on part-time practice may deteriorate operational performance but not necessarily medical-outcome performance. For so-called "complex" patients, reliance on part-time practice may even override the effect of patients' character...

General Data Protection Regulation and medical research: friend or foe?

As of May 2018, the use of personal data in medical research is regulated under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). While, as before, in principle patients' consent for the use of their personal data is still required, exemptions for medical research still exist. When all of the criteria for the exemptions are met, and the other requirements of the GDPR are adhered to, personal data can be used in medical research without consent. In this paper we present a brief outline of a number of GDPR-relat...

In this paper, we report on the intracavity frequency doubling of the Pr:YLF laser with a LiBO (LBO) crystal, which was pumped by a combined 1.4 W blue laser diode at 444 nm and 1.5 W blue laser diode at 469 nm. By optimizing the design of the resonator, using a 5-mm-long LBO crystal, the maximum output power of 5 mW at 302 nm was achieved with respect to the total pump power.

Directional Bistability and Nonreciprocal Lasing with Cold Atoms in a Ring Cavity.

We demonstrate lasing into counterpropagating modes of a ring cavity using a gas of cold atoms as a gain medium. The laser operates under the usual conditions of magneto-optical trapping with no additional fields. We characterize the threshold behavior of the laser and measure the second-order optical coherence. The laser emission exhibits directional bistability, switching randomly between clockwise and counterclockwise modes, and a tunable nonreciprocity is observed as the atoms are displaced along the ca...

Growing research in global surgery with an eye towards equity.

Global surgery research is often generated through collaborative partnerships between researchers from both low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and high-income countries (HICs). Inequitable engagement of LMIC collaborators can limit the impact of the research.
