Room-Temperature Liquid Na-K Anode Membranes.

The Na-K alloy is a liquid at 25 °C over a large compositional range. The liquid alloy is also immiscible in the organic-liquid electrolytes of an alkali-ion rechargeable battery, providing dendrite-free liquid alkali-metal batteries with a liquid-liquid anode-electrolyte interface at room temperature. The two liquids are each immobilized in a porous matrix. In previous work, the porous matrix used to immobilize the alloy was a carbon paper that is wet by the alloy at 420 °C; the alloy remains in the pape...

Analysis of global stock index data during crisis period via complex network approach.

Considerable research has been done on the complex stock market, however, there is very little systematic work on the impact of crisis on global stock markets. For filling in these gaps, we propose a complex network method, which analyzes the effects of the 2008 global financial crisis on global main stock index from 2005 to 2010. Firstly, we construct three weighted networks. The physics-derived technique of minimum spanning tree is utilized to investigate the networks of three stages. Regional clustering ...

Operando monitoring the lithium spatial distribution of lithium metal anodes.

Electrical mobility demands an increase of battery energy density beyond current lithium-ion technology. A crucial bottleneck is the development of safe and reversible lithium-metal anodes, which is challenged by short circuits caused by lithium-metal dendrites and a short cycle life owing to the reactivity with electrolytes. The evolution of the lithium-metal-film morphology is relatively poorly understood because it is difficult to monitor lithium, in particular during battery operation. Here we employ op...

Global warming potential and total material requirement in metal production: Identification of changes in environmental impact through metal substitution.

In view of the increasing demand for metal use, it is of significant importance to evaluate the environmental impact of metal production. The global warming potential (GWP) in the process of metal production has often been focused upon as a major indicator for evaluating the burden on the environment. Moreover, the environmental impact and mineral exploitation arising from metal ore mining activities, which generate unavoidable mine wastes and have an impact on the ecological biodiversity, cannot be ignored...

Highly Conductive and Robust 3D Host with Excellent Alkali Metal Infiltration Boosts Ultra-stable Lithium and Sodium Metal Anodes.

The direct utilization of metallic lithium and sodium as the anodes for rechargeable batteries would be highly advantageous, which has been considered as one of the most promising choices for next-generation high-energy-density storage devices. Although the induced safety concerns, inferior rate and cycling performance severely hinder the commercialization of lithium-metal batteries (LMB) and sodium-metal batteries (SMB), the recent development of nanotechnology-based solutions really revives the lithium/so...

MXene Aerogel Scaffolds for High Rate Lithium Metal Anodes.

Li metal is considered to be an ultimate anode for metal batteries owing to its extremely high theoretical capacity and lowest potential. However, numerous issues such as short lifespan and infinite volume expansion caused by the dendrite growth during Li plating/stripping hinder its practical usage. These challenges become more grievous under high current densities. Herein, 3D porous MXene aerogels are proposed as scaffolds for high rate Li metal anodes using Ti3C2 as an example. With high metallic electro...

Constructing a Stable Lithium Metal-Gel Electrolyte Interface for Quasi-Solid-State Lithium Batteries.

Because of high specific capacity and low redox potential, Li metal has long been considered as one of the most promising anode materials for next-generation rechargeable batteries. However, interfacial problems, including interfacial instability towards liquid electrolytes and poor interfacial contact with solid-state electrolytes, severely plague the practical application of Li metal anodes. Here we report an interfacial regulation strategy that stabilizes the Li metal-gel electrolyte interface through in...

The struggle for existence in the world market ecosystem.

The global trade system can be viewed as a dynamic ecosystem in which exporters struggle for resources: the markets in which they export. We can think that the aim of an exporter is to gain the entirety of a market share (say, car imports from the United States). This is similar to the objective of an organism in its attempt to monopolize a given subset of resources in an ecosystem. In this paper, we adopt a multilayer network approach to describe this struggle. We use longitudinal, multiplex data on trade ...

The social issue in the BRICS Project.

BRICS, the acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, is the first multilateral group created and run by non-western developed countries. The group aims to influence world geopolitics and market based on the right of developing and emerging countries to participate equitably in development. The social issue lies at the core of the group's justifications to achieve its goals. In this regard, this paper aims to analyze how the social issue has been addressed by BRICS. The methodology was based...

Electrode Edge Effects and Failure Mechanism of Lithium Metal Batteries.

Lithium (Li) metal with very high specific capacity makes it one of the ideal anode for high energy batteries. However, Li dendrite growth and the formation of isolated (or "dead") Li during repeated Li plating/stripping processes lead to its low Coulombic efficiency (CE). In this work, we discovered for the first time that electrode edge effects play an important role on the failure of Li metal batteries. The "dead" Li formed on the edge of Cu substrate was systematically investigated through scanning elec...
