Analysis of global stock index data during crisis period via complex network approach.

Considerable research has been done on the complex stock market, however, there is very little systematic work on the impact of crisis on global stock markets. For filling in these gaps, we propose a complex network method, which analyzes the effects of the 2008 global financial crisis on global main stock index from 2005 to 2010. Firstly, we construct three weighted networks. The physics-derived technique of minimum spanning tree is utilized to investigate the networks of three stages. Regional clustering ...

Atypical aluminium patch tests in children with persistent itching postvaccinal nodules.

Persistent itching nodules related to aluminium-adsorbed vaccines are well known in children with frequent positive patch tests to aluminium when tested. We report two cases of children with persistent postvaccination nodules who presented with atypical eruptions after aluminium patch tests.

Perspectives of regional paleoclimate modeling.

Regional climate modeling bridges the gap between the coarse resolution of current global climate models and the regional-to-local scales, where the impacts of climate change are of primary interest. Here, we present a review of the added value of the regional climate modeling approach within the scope of paleoclimate research and discuss the current major challenges and perspectives. Two time periods serve as an example: the Holocene, including the Last Millennium, and the Last Glacial Maximum. Reviewing t...

Time to tackle rheumatic heart disease: Data needed to drive global policy dialogues.

Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is an avoidable disease of poverty that persists predominantly in low resource settings and among Indigenous and other high-risk populations in some high-income nations. Following a period of relative global policy inertia on RHD, recent years have seen a resurgence of research, policy and civil society activity to tackle RHD; this has culminated in growing momentum at the highest levels of global health diplomacy to definitively address this disease of disadvantage. RHD is ine...

Surface Roughness of Composite Panels as a Quality Control Tool.

This paper describes a study of the quantify surface roughness of experimentally manufactured particleboards and sandwiched panels having fibers on the surface layers. Surface quality of specimens before and after being overlaid with thin melamine impregnated papers was determined by employing profilometer equipment. Roughness measurements and Janka hardness were carried out on the specimens conditioned at 60% and 95% relative humidity levels. Based on the findings in this work, surface roughness of the spe...

Environmental impacts of alternative agricultural uses of poorly drained farm land in Ireland.

Abolition of the milk quota in the European Union and favourable market conditions have stimulated the expansion of the dairy sector in Ireland, causing more milk to be produced from poorly drained land. This work evaluated the environmental impacts of alternative agricultural uses for poorly drained farm land in Ireland using life cycle assessment (LCA). The avoided burden of the displaced product was used to calculate the net environmental consequences in the context of regional or global markets. The imp...

Alpha-Tocopherol Supplementation Restricts Aluminium- and Ethanol-Induced Oxidative Damage in Rat Brain but Fails to Protect Against Neurobehavioral Damage.

The concurrent presence of oxidative stress (OS) and aluminium exposure is an inducer of neurodegenerative changes. Aluminium can augment OS in a pro-oxidant dominant condition. Antioxidative property of α-tocopherol may be useful in restricting these degenerative changes in the brain. OS parameters are tested in frontal cortex (FC), hippocampus (HC), and cerebellum (CL) of α-tocopherol-supplemented (5 IU/day) male Wistar rats exposed to aluminium (10 mg Al/Kg/day; "Al"), ethanol (0.6 g ethanol/Kg/day;...

Comparison of reactivity to a metallic disc and 2% aluminium salt in 366 children, and reproducibility over time for 241 young adults with childhood vaccine-related aluminium contact allergy.

An aluminium hydroxide-adsorbed pertussis toxoid vaccine was studied in 76 000 children in the 1990s in Gothenburg, Sweden. Long-lasting itchy subcutaneous nodules at the vaccination site were seen in 745 participants. Of 495 children with itchy nodules who were patch tested for aluminium allergy, 377 were positive. In 2007-2008, 241 of the positive children were retested. Only in 1 of 3 were earlier positive results reproduced.

Formation of the Asian Rabies Control Network (ARACON): A common approach towards a global good.

The drive towards the worldwide elimination of dog-mediated human rabies by 2030 is the first step towards the ultimate goal of dog rabies elimination - as dogs account for more than 99% of human rabies cases globally - and has gained considerable momentum since this resolution was taken at a global meeting in Geneva in December 2015. For dog rabies-endemic countries and regions, dedicated regional networks may offer unique opportunities to take advantage of this global momentum. Towards this goal, the Pan-...

Plasma assisted synthesis of γ-alumina from waste aluminium dross.

Aluminium dross, a waste generated from aluminium melting process, contains aluminium metal, aluminium oxide, aluminium oxy-nitride and impurities such as sodium chloride and potassium chloride. Since aluminium dross is land filled without treatment, it is hazardous to the environment. Conventional methods for the metal recovery from the recycling of aluminium dross involve chemicals and are time consuming. In this study, an attempt was made to treat aluminium dross using plasma arc melting process. The alu...

Commentary: Estimates of Global, Regional, and National Morbidity, Mortality, and Aetiologies of Diarrhoeal Diseases: A Systematic Analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015.

Substandard and falsified medical products are a global public health threat. A pilot survey of awareness among physicians in Sweden.

Substandard and falsified medical products are a public health threat, primarily associated with low- and middle-income countries. Today, the phenomenon also exists in high-income countries. Increased Internet access has opened a global market. Self-diagnosis and self-prescription have boosted the market for unregulated websites with access to falsified medicines.

Release of aluminium and thallium ions from uncoated food contact materials made of aluminium alloys into food and food simulant.

In order to investigate the release of aluminium ions from food contact materials, three different types of uncoated aluminium menu trays for single use were tested with the foodstuffs sauerkraut juice, apple sauce and tomato puree, as well as with the food simulants 5 g/L citric acid solution and artificial tap water. To mimic a consumer relevant exposure scenario, the aluminium trays were studied using time and temperature gradients according to the Cook & Chill method, also taking into account storage ti...

Global and regional estimates of prevalence of amblyopia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Amblyopia is one of the most important causes of vision impairment in the world, especially in children. Improving ancestry distinctions among Southwest Asian populations.

The Kidd Lab panel of 55 AISNPs can provide up to 10 statistically relevant biogeographic groupings of a global set of populations. A second-tier panel would be useful for increasing the accuracy for further differentiation of populations within a specific global grouping. Because recent advances in massively parallel sequencing (MPS) methods allow the genotyping of many more SNPs, we are now identifying additional SNPs to provide refined discrimination among regional subsets of populations; Southwest Asia ...

Opportunistic citizen science data transform understanding of species distributions, phenology, and diversity gradients for global change research.

Opportunistic citizen science (CS) programs allow volunteers to report species observations from anywhere, at any time, and can assemble large volumes of historic and current data at faster rates than more coordinated programs with standardized data collection. This can quickly provide large amounts of species distributional data, but whether this focus on participation comes at a cost in data quality is not clear. While automated and expert vetting can increase data reliability, there is no guarantee that ...
