Machine Learning for Healthcare: On the Verge of a Major Shift in Healthcare Epidemiology.

The increasing availability of electronic health data presents a major opportunity in healthcare for both discovery and practical applications to improve healthcare. However, for healthcare epidemiologists to best utilize these data, computational techniques that can handle large complex datasets are required. Machine learning (ML), the study of tools and methods for identifying patterns in data, can help. The appropriate application of ML to these data promises to transform patient risk stratification broa...

Comparison of body surface area-based and weight-based dosing format for oral prednisolone administration in small and large-breed dogs.

This study compared the pharmacokinetics of Prednisolone (PDS) in small- and large breed dogs with a dosing format based on body surface area (BSA) or body weight (BW). The maximum concentration and area under the curve in large-breed dogs orally administered 2 mg/kg PDS were significantly greater than those in small-breed dogs given 2 mg/kg and in large-breed dogs given 40 mg/m2. The higher blood concentrations that result from BW-based dosing of oral PDS in large-breed dogs can be more than required for e...

Frequency of five disease-causing genetic mutations in a large mixed-breed dog population (2011-2012).

A large and growing number of inherited genetic disease mutations are now known in the dog. Frequencies of these mutations are typically examined within the breed of discovery, possibly in related breeds, but nearly always in purebred dogs. No report to date has examined the frequencies of specific genetic disease mutations in a large population of mixed-breed dogs. Further, veterinarians and dog owners typically dismiss inherited/genetic diseases as possibilities for health problems in mixed-breed dogs, as...
