ASK1 facilitates tumor metastasis through phosphorylation of an ADP receptor P2Y12 in platelets.

Tumor metastasis is the major cause of deaths in cancer patients and is modulated by intertwined stress-responsive signaling cascades. Here we demonstrate that deletion of stress-responsive apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1 (Ask1) in platelets results in unstable hemostasis and drastic attenuation of tumor lung metastasis, both of which are attributable to platelet dysfunction. Platelet-specific deletion of Ask1 in mice leads to defects in ADP-dependent platelet aggregation, unstable hemostasis and subse...

ChAMP: Updated Methylation Analysis Pipeline for Illumina BeadChips.

The Illumina Infinium HumanMethylationEPIC BeadChip is the new platform for high-throughput DNA methylation analysis, effectively doubling the coverage compared to the older 450K array. Defective Platelet Activation and Bleeding Complications upon Cholestasis in Mice.

Platelets are essential mediators of hemostasis to avoid excessive blood loss. Cirrhosis and chronic liver diseases are characterized by alterations in hemostasis. Alterations in the secondary hemostasis have been well studied, while defects in primary hemostasis, especially the consequences of cholestatic liver disease on platelet function are not well defined.

Early Impacts of Marijuana Legalization: An Evaluation of Prices in Colorado and Washington.

Following the legalization and regulation of marijuana for recreational purposes in states with medical markets, policymakers and researchers seek empirical evidence on how, and how fast, supply and demand changed over time. Prices are an indication of how suppliers and consumers respond to policy changes, so this study uses a difference-in-difference approach to exploit the timing of policy implementation and identify the impacts on marijuana prices 4-5 months after markets opened. This study uses unique l...

Enhanced hemostasis with a sealant consisting of Hydrofit and Surgicel.

Bleeding is a serious concern during surgery for acute aortic dissections. We have used Hydrofit and Surgicel together to achieve hemostasis at the graft anastomotic sites during replacement of the ascending aorta and aortic arch. Complete hemostasis was achieved without further need for any additional sutures.

Who's Biased? A Meta-Analysis of Buyer-Seller Differences in the Pricing of Lotteries.

A large body of empirical research has examined the impact of trading perspective on pricing of consumer products, with the typical finding being that selling prices exceed buying prices (i.e., the endowment effect). Using a meta-analytic approach, we examine to what extent the endowment effect also emerges in the pricing of monetary lotteries. As monetary lotteries have a clearly defined normative value, we also assess whether one trading perspective is more biased than the other. We consider several indic...

Data Analysis Pipeline for RNA-seq Experiments: From Differential Expression to Cryptic Splicing.

RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) is a high-throughput technology that provides unique insights into the transcriptome. It has a wide variety of applications in quantifying genes/isoforms and in detecting non-coding RNA, alternative splicing, and splice junctions. It is extremely important to comprehend the entire transcriptome for a thorough understanding of the cellular system. Several RNA-seq analysis pipelines have been proposed to date. However, no single analysis pipeline can capture dynamics of the entire tra...

Risk-based underground pipeline safety management considering corrosion effect.

Due to the long term usage and irregular maintenance for corrosion checks, catastrophic accidents have been increasing in underground pipelines. In this study, a new safety management methodology of underground pipeline, risk-based pipeline management, is introduced reflecting corrosion effect. First, principle of the risk-based pipeline management is presented compared with an original method, qualitative measure. It is distinguished from the qualitative measure by reflecting societal risk and corrosion in...

The Bos taurus-Bos indicus balance in fertility and milk related genes.

Numerical approaches to high-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data are often employed independently to address individual questions. We linked independent approaches in a bioinformatics pipeline for further insight. The pipeline driven by heterozygosity and Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) analyses was applied to characterize Bos taurus and Bos indicus ancestry. We infer a gene co-heterozygosity network that regulates bovine fertility, from data on 18,363 cattle with genotypes for 729,068 SNP. H...
