Feet kinematics upon slipping discriminate between recoveries and three types of slip-induced falls.

This study investigated the relationship between feet kinematics upon slipping while walking and the outcome of the slip. Seventy-one slips (induced by walking over an unexpectedly slippery surface) were analysed, which included 37 recoveries, 16 feet-split falls, 11 feet-forward falls, and seven lateral falls. Feet kinematics differed between these four slip outcomes, and a discriminant model including six measures of feet kinematics correctly predicted 87% of slip outcomes. Two potentially modifiable char...

Teaching medicine with the help of "Dr. House".

TV series such as "House MD", "Grey´s Anatomy" or "Emergency Room" are well perceived by medical students. Seminars featuring medical TV series such as "House MD" might serve as door-opener to attract medical students to learn more about rare diseases. The TV series "House MD" is troublesome for the main character Dr. House is an excellent diagnostician but at the same time a rather misanthropic person. Therefore, lecturing medicine with the help of "House MD" requires constant evaluation. From 2008 to 201...

This study aimed to investigate the role of the Quality Blue Primary Care (QBPC) program on healthcare utilization and overall cost among the beneficiaries of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana (BCBSLA).

Current Models of Investor State Dispute Settlement Are Bad for Health: The European Union Could Offer an Alternative Comment on "The Trans-Pacific Partnership: Is It Everything We Feared for Health?"

In this commentary, we endorse concerns about the health impact of the trans-pacific partnership (TPP), paying particular attention to its mechanisms for investor state dispute settlement. We then describe the different, judge-led approach being advocated by the European Commission team negotiating the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, arguing that, while not perfect, it offers significant advantages.

The water activity, moisture content, total protein, lipid, and crude fiber contents of the blue corn ...

The Morality of Health Care Reform: Liberal and Conservative Views and the Space between Them.

We have just completed an exhausting nine-month debate on the future of the Affordable Care Act. I see this debate as having ended-as of this writing-in a draw. After months of repeal efforts, Republicans in the House barely passed in early May, with a 217-to-213 margin, the American Health Care Act, which would have significantly amended the ACA. Republicans in the Senate spent the summer trying to arrive at amendments to the AHCA that could attract fifty of their fifty-two votes, but in the end, the clock...

The effects of low-intensity narrow-band blue-light treatment compared to bright white-light treatment in seasonal affective disorder.

Ever since a new photoreceptor was discovered with a highest sensitivity to 470-490 nm blue light, it has been speculated that blue light has some advantages in the treatment of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) over more traditional treatments. In this study we compared the effects of exposure to narrow-band blue light (BLUE) to those of broad-wavelength white light (BLT) in the treatment of SAD.

What motion is: William Neile and the laws of motion.

In 1668-1669 William Neile and John Wallis engaged in a protracted correspondence regarding the nature of motion. Neile was unhappy with the laws of motion that had been established by the Royal Society in three papers published in 1668, deeming them not explanations of motion at all, but mere descriptions. Neile insisted that science could not be informative without a discussion of causes, meaning that Wallis's purely kinematic account of collision could not be complete. Wallis, however, did not consider N...

Effect of House Cricket (Acheta domesticus) Flour Addition on Physicochemical and Textural Properties of Meat Emulsion Under Various Formulations.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of house cricket (Acheta domesticus) flour addition on physicochemical and textural properties of meat emulsion under various formulations. As an initial marker of functionality, protein solubility, water absorption, emulsifying capacity, and gel formation ability of house cricket flour were determined at pH (2 to 10) and NaCl concentrations (0 to 2.10 M). Control emulsion was formulated with 60% lean pork, 20% back fat, and 20% ice. Six treatment emul...

Toxicity and Sublethal Effects of Cantharidin on Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae).

The house fly, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae), is a major pest of medical and veterinary importance all over the world. Management efforts for house flies are usually compromised owing to their resistance to many groups of conventional insecticides. Cantharidin, a natural toxin produced by meloid beetles, is a biopesticide with a reported toxicity to some insect pests including house flies. However, the effects of cantharidin on biological and fitness parameters of house flies have not yet been inve...

Hen's egg allergen in house and bed dust is significantly increased after hen's egg consumption - a pilot study.

Environmental exposure to food allergens may be a risk factor for cutaneous sensitization. Previous studies could detect peanut allergen in house dust. In this pilot study, we wanted to investigate whether hen's egg allergen is detectable in house dust collected from different household areas and whether levels are increased after intentional hen's egg consumption. Hen's egg protein levels of dust samples were measured using ELISA. In 8/8 households, hen's egg was detectable in dust samples of eating area a...

Molecular analyses of the agouti allele in the Japanese house mice identify a novel variant of the agouti gene.

It has been thought that Japanese house mice carry the Aw allele at the agouti locus causing light-colored bellies, but they do not always show this coloration. Thus, the presence of the Aw allele seems to be doubtful in them. To ascertain whether the Aw allele is present, a two-pronged approach was used. First, we compared lengths of DNA fragments obtained from three PCRs conducted on them to the known fragment sizes generated from mouse strains exhibiting homozygosities of either a/a, A/A, or Aw/Aw. PCRs ...

Computer-Aided Surgical Simulation in Head and Neck Reconstruction: A Cost Comparison among Traditional, In-House, and Commercial Options.

Computer-aided surgical simulation (CASS) has redefined surgery, improved precision and reduced the reliance on intraoperative trial-and-error manipulations. CASS is provided by third-party services; however, it may be cost-effective for some hospitals to develop in-house programs. This study provides the first cost analysis comparison among traditional (no CASS), commercial CASS, and in-house CASS for head and neck reconstruction.

A DFT investigation of the blue bottle experiment: E∘half-cell analysis of autoxidation catalysed by redox indicators.

The blue bottle experiment is a collective term for autoxidation reactions catalysed by redox indicators. The reactions are characterized by their repeatable cycle of colour changes when shaken/left to stand and intricate chemical pattern formation. The blue bottle experiment is studied based on calculated solution-phase half-cell reduction potential of related reactions. Our investigation confirms that the reaction in various versions of the blue bottle experiment published to date is mainly the oxidation ...

Mandate Repeal Provision Ends Health Care Calm.

Marketplace enrollment for 2018 has been robust in the face of several obstacles, but the ACA faces a new threat after the Senate's vote to repeal the individual mandate.

A Microsatellite-Based Analysis of House Infestation With Triatoma Infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) After Insecticide Spraying in the Argentine Chaco.

Prevention of vector-borne transmission of Chagas disease mainly relies on residual insecticide spraying. Despite significant success at a regional scale, house infestation with Triatoma infestans (Klug) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) still persists in the Gran Chaco ecoregion. One key aspect is the identification of the sources of reinfestant triatomines. After detecting fine-scale genetic structure in two rural villages of Pampa del Indio, Argentine Chaco, we tested hypotheses on the putative origins of the tria...

Generation of blue chrysanthemums by anthocyanin B-ring hydroxylation and glucosylation and its coloration mechanism.

Various colored cultivars of ornamental flowers have been bred by hybridization and mutation breeding; however, the generation of blue flowers for major cut flower plants, such as roses, chrysanthemums, and carnations, has not been achieved by conventional breeding or genetic engineering. Most blue-hued flowers contain delphinidin-based anthocyanins; therefore, delphinidin-producing carnation, rose, and chrysanthemum flowers have been generated by overexpression of the gene encoding flavonoid 3',5'-hydroxyl...

Blue toe syndrome as a first sign of systemic sclerosis.

We describe an unusual case of blue toe syndrome as the primary and solitary manifestation of systemic sclerosis. The possible cause was long-term occupational exposure in construction work. Blue toe syndrome is a small vessel disease, characterised by the sudden development of painful, blue discolouration in one or more toes. The most common aetiology is atheroembolic disease; however, it can also appear in several conditions ranging from hypercoagulability disorders to underlying systemic diseases such as...

Radiocesium contamination in house dust within evacuation areas close to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Outdoor decontamination efforts have been ongoing since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (FDNPP) accident; however, little is known about indoor contamination. Therefore, house dust was sampled based on particle size in 21 wooden buildings (19 residential houses and 2 community centers) within the evacuation area close to the FDNPP, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Activities of radiocesium (Cs) per gram of house dust increased with decreasing particle size (mean: 6.1 × 10, 2.6 × 10, 1.6 ×...

Dose-Dependent Effects on Replication and Persistence of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium in House Flies (Diptera: Muscidae).

Adult house flies (Musca domestica L.) ingest variable numbers of bacteria when they encounter microbe-rich substrates. Bacterial abundance may affect replication within the fly gut, which subsequently impacts vector potential. This study investigated the dose-dependent replication of GFP-expressing Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (ex Kauffmann and Edwards1952) Le Minor and Popoff 1987, (Enterobacteriales: Enterobacteriaceae) (GFP S. Typhimurium) within the fly alimentary canal. Adult house flies we...

Effects of house prices on health: New evidence from Australia.

Recent house price variation has strongly affected households' housing wealth and debt, yet the non-economic consequences of these changes in housing wealth are still poorly understood. Using a sample of 19,000 individuals from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey (HILDA) for 2001-2015, we examine the relationship between house price fluctuations and individual health by exploiting large exogenous changes in house prices in Australia. We find that an increase in local house prices i...

Using an In-House Approach to Computer-Assisted Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing Reconstruction of the Maxilla.

Computer-assisted design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) techniques are in widespread use for maxillofacial reconstruction. However, CAD/CAM surgical guides are commercially available only in limited areas. To use this technology in areas where these commercial guides are not available, the authors developed a CAD/CAM technique in which all processes are performed by the surgeon (in-house approach). The authors describe their experience and the characteristics of their in-house CAD/CAM reconstr...

Does the hormone "endogenous ouabain" exist in the human circulation?

Studies in the early 1990s suggested that a hormone identical to ouabain or an isomer of ouabain is secreted by the adrenal glands into the circulation and plays a role in the regulation of arterial pressure and cardiac and renal function. This hormone, known as endogenous ouabain (EO), was claimed to contribute to the pathophysiology of a number of disorders including heart failure, renal failure, pregnancy-induced, and essential hypertension. However, some research groups have been unable to confirm the p...
