Embryological Consideration of Dural AVFs in Relation to the Neural Crest and the Mesoderm.

Intracranial and spinal dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) are vascular pathologies of the dural membrane with arteriovenous shunts. They are abnormal communications between arteries and veins or dural venous sinuses that sit between the two sheets of the dura mater. The dura propria faces the surface of brain, and the osteal dura faces the bone. The location of the shunt points is not distributed homogeneously on the surface of the dural membrane, but there are certain areas susceptible to DAVFs. The dur...

Mechanical and morphological description of human acellular dura mater as a scaffold for surgical reconstruction.

As native human dura mater has been successfully used as a transplant, the acellular dura mater scaffold is a promising material for the same purpose, that is less prone to transplant rejection. A detailed knowledge of the dura material properties may also aid to tissue engineer customized scaffolds mechanically mimicking the healthy natural condition. Both native and acellular dura have to date not been satisfactorily described concerning their load-deformation properties and the morphology related to scaf...

Primary, dural-based, Ewing sarcoma manifesting with seizure activity: Presentation of a rare tumor entity with literature review.

Primary Ewing sarcoma arising from the calvarial bone and/or underlying dura matter are relatively rarely reported in the literature. Even rarer are considered to be those that originate from the dura and proliferate in both directions, toward the brain parenchyma and through the dura invade the overlying bone.

Based on a longtime voluntary registry, founded by the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (GSTCVS), well-defined data of all cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgery procedures performed in 78 German heart surgery departments during the year 2018 are analyzed. For this period, a total of 174,902 procedures were submitted to the registry, 98,707 summarized as heart surgery procedures in the classical meaning. The unadjusted in-hospital survival rate for 33,999 isolated coronary artery bypa...

Structure and mechanical characteristics of spinal dura mater in different segments of sheep's spine.

Controversies related to pediatric Chiari I malformation.

Foramen magnum decompression is a common surgical treatment for Chiari type 1 malformation (CM-1). There are several methods for the intervention to the dura matter such as dural plasty sectioning the dura, also removing the outer membrane of the dura without intradural manipulation. We compared retrospectively our cases with a presentation of illustrative cases. Finally, we add our comments to the worldwide questionnaire which was offered.

Skull Base Dural Repair Using Autologous Fat As Dural Substitute: An Efficient Technique.

Dural repair during skull base approaches remains challenging, especially in presence of significant defects. The autologous fat has come as alternative to various substitute materials being used previously. We report here our experience and technique for the repair of notable skull base dural defects, using autologous fat as dural substitute.

Impact of updated pediatric hypertension guidelines on progression from elevated blood pressure to hypertension in a community-based primary care population.

In 2017, definitions for pediatric hypertension were updated. A threshold of 130/80 mm Hg was introduced for stage 1 hypertension in adolescents, and children with obesity were removed from the reference population, lowering the 95th percentile, compared to the 2004 Fourth Report. The impact of these changes on care for youth with elevated blood pressure has not been well described. The objective of this study was to compare the 2017 and 2004 criteria for hypertension, evaluating how they impact estimates ...

Mini-One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass is a new operation that provides comparable outcomes to the common bariatric procedures. Revisional surgery is still needed after a number of MGB-OAGB procedures. The aim of this study is to report the causes and management of these revisions.

Can short-term video-EEG substitute long-term video-EEG monitoring in psychogenic nonepileptic seizures? A prospective observational study.

Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES), the commonest nonepileptic event, represent 20-30% of drug-resistant epilepsy. Correct identification of PNES avoids unnecessary hospitalization and exposure of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), and helps implement appropriate psychological treatment. Long-term video-electroencephalography (LTVEEG) is the gold standard test to diagnose PNES. However, in a poor-resource country like India, hypothetically, short-term video-electroencephalography (STVEEG) may substitute it, ...

Usefulness of the knot-tightener device following dural suturing in endonasal transsphenoidal surgery: technical report.

Transsphenoidal surgery (TSS) has become a well-established standard surgical technique, but the cerebrospinal fluid leakage remains controversial. Direct suturing of the dura, which is a routine procedure within transcranial surgery, can be applied for closure of the sella turcica within TSS. However, as the dura is not accessible by the index finger, knot tying in the narrow and deep surgical corridor following dural suturing is extremely difficult, cumbersome, and time-consuming in TSS. Here, we present ...

Use of a near-infrared vein finder to define cortical veins and dural sinuses prior to dural opening.

Near-infrared (NIR) light is commonly used to map venous anatomy in the upper extremities to gain intravenous access for line placement. In this report, the authors describe the use of a common and commercially available NIR vein finder to delineate the cortical venous anatomy prior to dural opening.During a variety of cranial approaches, the dura was directly visualized using an NIR vein finder. The NIR light source allowed for recognition of the underlying cortical venous anatomy, dural sinuses, and under...

Updated decay data evaluation for Ga.

The updated evaluation of the decay data for the radionuclide Ga is presented. The evaluated data have been obtained using the methodology adopted in the Decay Data Evaluation Project (DDEP). Particular attention is paid to obtaining the recommended value for the Ga half-life from the discrepant data set. The recent half-life measurements do not improve the data consistency of this data set. The different statistical procedures are used to select the recommended value of 67.77 (14) min for the Ga half-life.

Mycobacterium abscessus infection following home dermabrasion.

With an ever-increasing prevalence of cosmetic treatments, there also have been increasing rates of skin and soft tissue infections due to cosmetic procedures and other popular procedures such as acupuncture. We report a case of a 32-year-old woman who presented with a tender lump on the face of 6 weeks' duration that developed acutely after using an at-home microdermabrasion device. She was eventually diagnosed with a skin infection due to Mycobacterium abscessus, which is part of a more specific group kno...

An updated European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) protocol for pathological evaluation of sentinel lymph nodes for melanoma.

The sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is a highly accurate staging procedure and the most important prognostic factor in melanoma patients. The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Melanoma Group aimed to design an updated evolved SLN protocol for the histopathological workup and reporting. We herein recommend extending the distance between steps according to the short axis dimension of the lymph node and optimise both conventional sectioning and staining procedures including im...

Scrub typhus has emerged as a major cause of acute febrile illness in India in recent years. The causative agent, Orientiatsutsugamushi has more than 20 prototypes strains due to a variable 56-kDa outer membrane protein. It is crucial to know the prevailing types in India for the success of diagnostic immunoassays and prospective vaccine candidates. In north India, the principal types circulating are largely unknown.
