High-dose influenza vaccine to reduce clinical outcomes in high-risk cardiovascular patients: Rationale and design of the INVESTED trial.

Influenza leads to significant cardiopulmonary morbidity and mortality-particularly in patients with cardiovascular disease-that may be prevented with a standard influenza vaccine. However, patients with cardiovascular conditions have a reduced immune response to influenza vaccine, potentially resulting in reduced effectiveness for preventing clinical events. High-dose vaccine augments immune response in cardiac patients, suggesting that a high-dose influenza vaccination strategy may further reduce morbidit...

Assessment of temporally-related acute respiratory illness following influenza vaccination.

A barrier to influenza vaccination is the misperception that the inactivated vaccine can cause influenza. Previous studies have investigated the risk of acute respiratory illness (ARI) after influenza vaccination with conflicting results. We assessed whether there is an increased rate of laboratory-confirmed ARI in post-influenza vaccination periods.

Short-term and medium-term efficacy of mesotherapy in patients with lower back pain due to spondyloarthrosis.

Mesotherapy is an intradermal treatment for patients with local pain. The literature describes the efficacy of mesotherapy in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders measuring a reduction of analgesic drug intake and of healthcare spending. The aim of this study was to measure the effects of mesotherapy on pain and disability in patients with low back pain due to spondyloarthrosis.

Relationship between the frequency of influenza vaccination and cell-mediated immunity.

Despite established guidelines for population-level assessments of immunity after vaccination, standard methods for individual-level analyses have not been established, limiting the ability to optimize vaccination strategies within a particular season. In this study, we evaluated changes in cell-mediated immunity (CMI) with respect to the number of influenza vaccine doses. In particular, the influenza vaccine was administered to 21 adults during the 2015-2016 season. IFN-γ production induced by the influen...

Immune response to influenza vaccination in children with cancer.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of influenza immunization to evoke a protective immune response among children with cancer. We evaluated 75 children with cancer who received influenza vaccination. Hemagglutination Inhibition Antibody titers were determined before and after vaccination. The protective rates after vaccination were 79% for H1N1, 75% for H3N2 and 59% for influenza B virus whereas the seroconversion rates were 54%, 44% and 43% respectively. The differences pre- and post-vaccina...

Racial disparities in vaccination for seasonal influenza in early childhood.

Influenza vaccination is the best protection against infection and severe complications of disease, such as hospitalization and death. Therefore, it is important to accurately estimate vaccination coverage and to evaluate the role of race/ethnicity. This study examines racial disparities in influenza vaccination among children using a nationally representative sample.

Efficacy and effectiveness of high-dose versus standard-dose influenza vaccination for older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Influenza is responsible for a significant disease burden annually, especially in older adults. This study reviews the relative vaccine efficacy or effectiveness (rVE) of high-dose inactivated trivalent influenza vaccine (HD-IIV3) compared to standard-dose influenza vaccines (IIV3) in adults ≥65 against influenza-associated outcomes to inform evidence-based decision-making to shift clinical practice and standard of care in this population.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the direct epidemiological and economic effects of seasonal influenza vaccination on healthcare workers.

Influenza vaccination is a commonly used intervention to prevent influenza infection in healthcare workers (HCWs) and onward transmission to other staff and patients. We undertook a systematic review to synthesize the latest evidence of the direct epidemiological and economic effectiveness of seasonal influenza vaccination among HCW.

A Systematic Review of Safety and Immunogenicity of Influenza Vaccination Strategies in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients.

Immunogenicity from seasonal inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) remains suboptimal in solid organ transplant recipients (SOTR). We conducted a systematic review that compared the safety and immunogenicity of non-standard influenza vaccination strategies to single dose IIV in SOTR. Booster dose(s) and possibly high dose (HD) influenza vaccination strategies appear to hold promise for improving vaccination immunogenicity in SOTR. Administration of intradermal and MF59-adjuvanted trivalent IIV (IIV3) did not ...

Limited information is available on the association between a influenza vaccination and postoperative outcomes.

ACOG Committee Opinion No. 732: Influenza Vaccination During Pregnancy.

Influenza vaccination is an essential element of prepregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum care because influenza can result in serious illness, including a higher chance of progressing to pneumonia, when it occurs during the antepartum or postpartum period. In addition to hospitalization, pregnant women with influenza are at increased risk of intensive care unit admission and adverse perinatal and neonatal outcomes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices ...

Impact of timing of influenza vaccination in pregnancy on transplacental antibody transfer, influenza incidence and birth outcomes; a randomized trial in rural Nepal.

Maternal influenza vaccination protects mothers and their infants in low resource settings but little is known about whether the protection varies by gestational age at vaccination.

Japanese anti- versus pro-influenza vaccination websites: a text-mining analysis.

Anti-vaccination sentiment exists worldwide and Japan is no exception. Health professionals publish pro-influenza vaccination messages online to encourage proactive seeking of influenza vaccination. However, influenza vaccine coverage among the Japanese population is less than optimal. The contents of pro- and anti-influenza vaccination websites may contribute to readers' acceptance of one or the other position. We aimed to use a text-mining method to examine frequently appearing content on websites for and...

Increasing influenza vaccination rates via low cost messaging interventions.

This article tests low cost interventions to increase influenza vaccination rates. By changing an email announcement sent out to employees in 2014 (n > 30,000), the following interventions are tested: incentives, attention to the negative impacts of not get vaccinated, and showing a map to the vaccination centers at the end of the email announcement. Only the map condition helped increase influenza vaccination rates. The use of low-cost interventions can improve influenza vaccination rates though not all in...

Adult Caregiver Influenza Vaccination Through Administration in Pediatric Outpatient Clinics: A Cocooning Healthcare Improvement Project.

Pediatric exposure to influenza-infected adult caregivers (AC) is a significant risk factor for developing influenza. Poor access to vaccines contributes to low adult vaccination rates. We offered adult vaccination at regularly scheduled pediatric office visits and examined barriers to improve future vaccination rates.

Determinants of influenza vaccination among a large adult population in Quebec.

Very low uptake has been noted for influenza vaccination in the province of Quebec. This study aimed to identify the determinants of influenza vaccination among a large regional population.

Influenza vaccination in preventing outbreaks in schools: A long-term ecological overview.

Influenza vaccination is the most effective way to reduce the incidence of influenza infections. However, the role of influenza vaccination, such as school-based influenza vaccination, in preventing the influenza outbreaks in schools remains unclear now. In this study, a total of 286 school febrile outbreaks involving 6863 cases in the Beijing area from September 1, 2006 to March 31, 2017 were analyzed. We also tested 294 circulating strains isolated in Beijing during the same period and compared with that ...

Randomized controlled trial on promoting influenza vaccination in general practice waiting rooms.

Most of general practitioners (GPs) use advertising in their waiting rooms for patient's education purposes. Patients vaccinated against seasonal influenza have been gradually lessening. The objective of this trial was to assess the effect of an advertising campaign for influenza vaccination using posters and pamphlets in GPs' waiting rooms.

A multiyear quality improvement project to increase influenza vaccination in a pediatric oncology population undergoing active therapy.
