On the Universality of Memcomputing Machines.

Universal memcomputing machines (UMMs) represent a novel computational model in which memory (time nonlocality) accomplishes both tasks of storing and processing of information. UMMs have been shown to be Turing-complete, namely, they can simulate any Turing machine. In this paper, we first introduce a novel set theory approach to compare different computational models and use it to recover the previous results on Turing-completeness of UMMs. We then relate UMMs directly to liquid-state machines (or ``reser...

Qualitative study of mechanical parameters of conventional diagnostic X-ray machines in Mizoram.

The present study examined the mechanical attributes of 135 conventional diagnostic X-ray machines in Mizoram, India. The purpose of studying the X-ray mechanical parameters, such as congruency, perpendicularity of the central beam, and half-value layer, was to improve the quality of the diagnostic image and reduce the patient dose. A battery-operated portable dosimeter was used to measure output radiation of the X-ray machine. The half-value layer was measured at a constant accelerating potential of 70 kVp...

People are averse to machines making moral decisions.

Do people want autonomous machines making moral decisions? Nine studies suggest that that the answer is 'no'-in part because machines lack a complete mind. Studies 1-6 find that people are averse to machines making morally-relevant driving, legal, medical, and military decisions, and that this aversion is mediated by the perception that machines can neither fully think nor feel. Studies 5-6 find that this aversion exists even when moral decisions have positive outcomes. Studies 7-9 briefly investigate three...

Advancing Professionalization of Biobank Business Operations: A Worldwide Survey.

Quality specimens from biobanks are key resources to support reproducible research. Sustaining biobanks requires robust management. We recently published a pilot survey that indicated that over half the participating biobanks had business plans in place and another third were working on business planning. While the results provided a clue to the status of business planning in biobanking, it was concluded that a longer and more in-depth survey and analysis were required. In April 2017, an extended survey was...

Exploring the business of urology: Is it time for a "Business of Healthcare" curriculum in urology residency programs?

Evaluation of beam matching accuracy among six linacs from the same vendor.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dosimetric variation among six non-beam-matched Varian linacs using different techniques for the same plans. Six non-beam-matched Varian machines, comprising two Clinac iX, two 600 C/D (Unique), and two True Beam Tx photon 6 MV X-ray devices were acquired. Sixty patients with of head and neck (H&N; 30) and pelvic (30) treatment sites were chosen. For all 60 patients, three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT), intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), and ...

Business Leadership in Global Climate Change Responses.

In the 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement, 195 countries committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in recognition of the scientific consensus on the consequences of climate change, including substantial public health burdens. In June 2017, however, US president Donald Trump announced that the United States would not implement the Paris Agreement. We highlight the business community's backing for climate change action in the United States. Just as the US federal government is backing away from its Pari...

CORP: Partitional Calorimetry.

For thermal physiologists, calorimetry is an important methodological tool to assess human heat balance during heat or cold exposures. A whole-body direct calorimeter remains the gold standard instrument for assessing human heat balance; however, this equipment is rarely available to most researchers. A more widely accessible substitute is partitional calorimetry, a method by which all components of the conceptual heat balance equation - metabolic heat production, conduction, radiation, convection, and evap...

Business performance management in university hospitals: a diagnosis in Brazilian institutions.

To investigate whether business performance management practices are used by Brazilian federal university hospitals, and if so, to determine which practices are used and explore characteristics that may be related to their adoption.

The extent that certain dairy farmer attitudes and behaviors are associated with farm business profitability.

The way in which farm managers' attitudes, personality, behavior, values, and sociodemographic characteristics influence farm business performance is, at best, only partially understood. The study reported here expands on this understanding by analyzing the attitudes and personal attributes of 80 dairy farmers in Great Britain in relation to the profitability over 3 yr of their farm businesses. Business goals, temperament, purchasing behavior, and having a growth mindset toward the business were found to be...

Safety Talk and Safety Culture: Discursive Repertoires as Indicators of Workplace Safety and Health Practice and Readiness to Change.

Small construction businesses (SCBs) account for a disproportionate share of occupational injuries, days lost, and fatalities in the US and other modern economies. Owner/managers of SCBs confront risks associated with their own and workers' safety and business survival, and their occupational safety and health (OSH) related values and practices are key drivers of safety and business outcomes. Given owner/mangers are the key to understanding and affecting change in smaller firms, as well as the pressing need...

Developing an Integrated Approach to Workplace Mental Health: A Hypothetical Conversation with a Small Business Owner.

An integrated approach to workplace mental health encompasses three main areas of activity: (i) protecting mental health by reducing work-related and other risk factors for mental health problems, (ii) promoting mental health by developing the positive aspects of work as well as worker strengths and positive capacities, and (iii) responding to mental health problems as they manifest at work regardless of cause (work-related or otherwise). This represents an effort to distil what is a complex issue warrantin...

Dentistry as a free market in the context of leading policymaking.

The purpose of this study was to disclose the psychological meaning structure of dentistry as a free market within the context of leading Swedish policymaking. Following the criteria for the descriptive phenomenological psychological method data was collected from leading policy makers about the experiential aspects of dentistry as a free market within the context of a welfare state. The analysis showed that dentistry as a free market was experienced as a complex business relationship between buyers and sel...

Frankenstein or a Submarine Alkaline Vent: Who Is Responsible for Abiogenesis?: Part 1: What is life-that it might create itself?

Origin of life models based on "energized assemblages of building blocks" are untenable in principle. This is fundamentally a consequence of the fact that any living system is in a physical state that is extremely far from equilibrium, a condition it must itself build and sustain. This in turn requires that it carries out all of its molecular transformations-obligatorily those that convert, and thereby create, disequilibria-using case-specific mechanochemical macromolecular machines. Mass-action solution ch...

A comparison of the effectiveness of three LED phototherapy machines, single- and double-sided, for treating neonatal jaundice in a low resource setting.

Neonatal jaundice is one of the most common reasons for hospital admission in low resource settings. Treatment is frequently inadequate as conventional phototherapy requires frequent bulb changes. LED phototherapy has comparable efficacy to conventional phototherapy, and the bulbs last over 40,000 hours. This observational study compares the effectiveness of three LED machines, two single-sided and one double-sided in routine use in Vietnam.

The Environmental Protection Agency in the Early Trump Administration: Prelude to Regulatory Capture.

We explore and contextualize changes at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over the first 6 months of the Trump administration, arguing that its pro-business direction is enabling a form of regulatory capture. We draw on news articles, public documents, and a rapid response, multisited interview study of current and retired EPA employees to (1) document changes associated with the new administration, (2) contextualize and compare the current pro-business makeover with previous ones, and (3) publicly ...

Similarity Domains Machine for Scale-invariant and Sparse Shape Modeling.

We present an approach to extend the functionality and the use of kernel machines in image processing applications: we introduce a novel way to design spatial kernel machines with spatial properties and demonstrate how those newly introduced spatial properties enhance the possibilities of the use of kernel machines in image processing applications as a proof of concept. In this paper, we demonstrate four particular extensions: (1) how to model shapes efficiently with spatially computed kernel parameters in ...

The Unfinished Business in Bereavement Scale (UBBS): Development and psychometric evaluation.

Although unresolved issues with the deceased are often targeted in bereavement interventions, understanding of this construct has been hampered by the lack of a psychometrically validated scale to assess it. To address this gap, the Unfinished Business in Bereavement Scale (UBBS) was developed and tested in two samples of bereaved adults (n = 292 and 168). In exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, the UBBS was found to be composed of two related factors. Items tapping into Unfulfilled Wishes pert...

On the importance of hidden bias and hidden entropy in representational efficiency of the Gaussian-Bipolar Restricted Boltzmann Machines.

In this paper, we analyze the role of hidden bias in representational efficiency of the Gaussian-Bipolar Restricted Boltzmann Machines (GBPRBMs), which are similar to the widely used Gaussian-Bernoulli RBMs. Our experiments show that hidden bias plays an important role in shaping of the probability density function of the visible units. We define hidden entropy and propose it as a measure of representational efficiency of the model. By using this measure, we investigate the effect of hidden bias on the hidd...

The 2017/2018 influenza season-business as usual? : A statement of medical societies.

DREAM-Yara: an exact read mapper for very large databases with short update time.

Mapping-based approaches have become limited in their application to very large sets of references since computing an FM-index for very large databases (e.g. >10 GB) has become a bottleneck. This affects many analyses that need such index as an essential step for approximate matching of the NGS reads to reference databases. For instance, in typical metagenomics analysis, the size of the reference sequences has become prohibitive to compute a single full-text index on standard machines. Even on large memory ...

Human papillomavirus disease burden in men : HPV prevention is a man's business.

Due to the lack of an established school-based immunization program, the initial German public funded girls-only human papillomavirus (HPV)-vaccination strategy failed. Over the last decade, the female coverage rates have not exceeded much more than 40%, thus, missing herd immunity for boys. Therefore, the German HPV immunization program has been revised and currently recommends a gender-neutral HPV vaccination for all children aged 9-14 years to prevent all HPV-related tumors which can be prevented by im...
