The symmetry of the Kepler problem, the inverse Ligon-Schaaf mapping and the Birkhoff conjecture.

The Ligon-Schaaf regularization (LS mapping) was introduced in 1976 and has been used several times. However, we are not aware of any direct usage of the inverse mapping, perhaps since it appears at first sight to be quite complex, involves the use of a transcendental equation (referred to as the generalized Kepler equation) that cannot be solved in closed form, and lacks smoothness near the collision point. Here, we provide some insight into the significance of this equation, along with a very simple deriv...

Superflare Ultraviolet Impact on Kepler-96 System: A Glimpse of Habitability When the Ozone Layer First Formed on Earth.

Kepler-96 is an active solar-type star harboring a Super-Earth planet in close orbit. Its age of 2.3 gigayears is the same as the Sun when there was a considerable increase of oxygen in Earth's atmosphere due to micro-organisms living in the ocean. We present the analysis of superflares seen on the transit light curves of Kepler-96b. The model used here simulates the planetary transit in a flaring star. By fitting the observational data with this model, it is possible to infer the physical properties of the...

Beliefs About Etiology and Treatment of Mental Illness Among Korean Presbyterian Pastors.

This descriptive study explored pastors' beliefs about etiology and treatment of mental illness. Surveys were completed by mail by 202 Korean and Euro-American Presbyterian clergy. Nearly one-third of Korean pastors viewed bad parenting and demon possession as very important causes of mental illness, in contrast to the more than two-thirds of Euro-American pastors who viewed genetics and chemical imbalances as the most important causes. Compared with their Euro-American counterparts, Korean pastors soundly ...

Toxicity and mutagenicity of exhaust from compressed natural gas: Could this be a clean solution for megacities with mixed-traffic conditions?

Despite intensive research carried out on particulates, correlation between engine-out particulate emissions and adverse health effects is not well understood yet. Particulate emissions hold enormous significance for mega-cities like Delhi that have immense traffic diversity. Entire public transportation system involving taxis, three-wheelers, and buses has been switched from conventional liquid fuels to compressed natural gas (CNG) in the Mega-city of Delhi. In this study, the particulate characterization ...

Cooke-Triplet tweezers: more compact, robust, and efficient optical tweezers.

We present a versatile three-lens optical design to improve the overall compactness, efficiency, and robustness for optical tweezers based applications. The design, inspired by the Cooke-Triplet configuration, allows for continuous beam magnifications of 2-10×, and axial as well as lateral focal shifts can be realized without switching lenses or introducing optical aberrations. We quantify the beam quality and trapping stiffness and compare the Cooke-Triplet design with the commonly used double Kepler desi...

Evaluation of NO emissions of a retrofitted Euro 5 passenger car for the Horizon prize "Engine retrofit".

The Horizon 2020 prize for the "Engine Retrofit for Clean Air" aims at reducing the pollution in cities by spurring the development of retrofit technology for diesel engines. A Euro 5 passenger car was retrofitted with an under-floor SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) for NO catalyst in combination with a solid ammonia based dosing system as the NO reductant. The vehicle was tested both on the road and on the chassis dynamometer under various test cycles and ambient temperatures. The NO emissions were redu...

Ultrasonographic Imaging of the medial and lateral pouches in the knee: EURO-MUSCULUS/USPRM protocol(s) revisited.

System based on thermal control of the HCCI technology developed for reduction of the vehicle NO emissions in order to fulfil the future standard Euro 7.

On the present the environmental protection belongs among the most important worldwide priorities. From this reason there is valid within the framework of the European Union the standard Euro, which is specifically defined in the transport area. Nowadays the actual issue of this standard is signed Euro 6. It is established in order to eliminate most of the undesirable air pollutants. However, there is already prepared a new and even stricter emission standard Euro 7. It is a well-known fact that the actual ...

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitrated analogs associated to particulate matter emission from a Euro V-SCR engine fuelled with diesel/biodiesel blends.

Among the new technologies developed for the heavy-duty fleet, the use of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) aftertreatment system in standard Diesel engines associated with biodiesel/diesel mixtures is an alternative in use to control the legislated pollutants emission. Nevertheless, there is an absence of knowledge about the synergic behaviour of these devices and biodiesel blends regarding the emissions of unregulated substances as the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Nitro-PAHs, both recogni...

Exploring Multi-Use potentials in the Euro-Mediterranean sea space.

European seas are experiencing rapid development. The anthropogenic demand for marine resources and space exerts the need for novel concepts for sustainable resource exploitation and smart space allocation. Multi-Use (MU) is an emerging concept to overcome spatial claims and support Blue Growth, however its actual potentials and current status of implementation in different sea basins is to a large extent unexplored. An analytical framework using a mixed method approach is proposed for the identification an...

Barcoding of Chrysomelidae of Euro-Mediterranean area: efficiency and problematic species.

Leaf beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), with more than 37,000 species worldwide and about 2,300 in the Euro-Mediterranean region, are an ecological and economical relevant family, making their molecular identification of interest also in agriculture. This study, part of the Mediterranean Chrysomelidae Barcoding project (www.c-bar.org), aims to: (i) develop a reference Cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) library for the molecular identification of the Euro-Mediterranean Chrysomelidae; (ii) test the efficiency of...

Simultaneous determination of mono-, di-, oligo- and polysaccharides via planar chromatography in 4 different prebiotic foods and 60 naturally degraded inulin samples.

Oligo- and polysaccharides, especially fructooligosaccharides and inulin, are increasingly used as food ingredients. They are reported to stimulate the growth of bifidobacteria and are therefore used as prebiotics. As mono-, di-, oligo- and polysaccharides can together be present in food, an HPTLC method was developed for analyzing all in a single development. This method was used for both, effective food screening and quantification on the same plate. After a minimal sample preparation (aqueous extraction,...

Advanced formulations for Intranasal Delivery of Biologics.

The global biologics market has been ever increasing over the last decades and is predicted to top Euro 350 by 2020. Facing this scenario, the parenteral route of biologics administration as hitherto standard route is inconvenient for the future. Among the alternatives, the intranasal delivery of therapeutic biologicals seems to be most promising but researchers are still facing challenges as indicated by the scarce number of successfully marketed peptide drugs.

Population specific data improves Fordisc's performance in Italians.

Using discriminant functions based on morphometric data is one of the most approved methods for sex and ancestry estimation on skeletons. Nevertheless, population data from various parts of the world is needed in order to reliably classify an individual into a group. Due to population variation even sex estimation is biased when there is a lack of adequate data. Software that computes discriminant functions based on morphometric data is Fordisc. Unfortunately, the above mentioned effects reduce its applicab...
