Association of Polymorphism rs17576 of the Metalloproteinase 9 Gene with Gestational Diabetes in Euro-Brazilian Pregnant Women.

Metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9) is involved in the degradation of extracellular matrix molecules, and its polymorphism rs17576 (Gln279Arg) has been associated with diabetes. We investigated the association of rs17576 in a case-control study with Euro-Brazilian women with gestational diabetes.

Cooke-Triplet tweezers: more compact, robust, and efficient optical tweezers.

We present a versatile three-lens optical design to improve the overall compactness, efficiency, and robustness for optical tweezers based applications. The design, inspired by the Cooke-Triplet configuration, allows for continuous beam magnifications of 2-10×, and axial as well as lateral focal shifts can be realized without switching lenses or introducing optical aberrations. We quantify the beam quality and trapping stiffness and compare the Cooke-Triplet design with the commonly used double Kepler desi...

Influences of Native American land use on the Colonial Euro-American settlement of the South Carolina Piedmont.

We test the hypothesis that prehistoric Native American land use influenced the Euro-American settlement process in a South Carolina Piedmont landscape. Long term ecological studies demonstrate that land use legacies influence processes and trajectories in complex, coupled social and ecological systems. Native American land use likely altered the ecological and evolutionary feedback and trajectories of many North American landscapes. Yet, considerable debate revolves around the scale and extent of land use ...

Toxicity and mutagenicity of exhaust from compressed natural gas: Could this be a clean solution for megacities with mixed-traffic conditions?

Despite intensive research carried out on particulates, correlation between engine-out particulate emissions and adverse health effects is not well understood yet. Particulate emissions hold enormous significance for mega-cities like Delhi that have immense traffic diversity. Entire public transportation system involving taxis, three-wheelers, and buses has been switched from conventional liquid fuels to compressed natural gas (CNG) in the Mega-city of Delhi. In this study, the particulate characterization ...

Impact of the EURO-2016 football cup on emergency department visits related to alcohol and injury.

In Marseille, the 2016 EURO football cup days were independently associated with a 43% increase in alcohol-related visits in the Emergency Department (ED). Patients admitted for alcohol consumption were younger (41 vs. 46.6;P < 0.001), more often male (82.8% vs. 60.1%; P < 0.001) and more often admitted as inpatients (24.0% vs. 16.5%; P = 0.03) than those admitted for injury. Unlike reported in previous studies, injury-related visits did not increase. This could be explained by coding practice variability b...

Impact of cold temperature on Euro 6 passenger car emissions.

Hydrocarbons, CO, NOx, NH3, N2O, CO2 and particulate matter emissions affect air quality, global warming and human health. Transport sector is an important source of these pollutants and high pollution episodes are often experienced during the cold season. However, EU vehicle emissions regulation at cold ambient temperature only addresses hydrocarbons and CO vehicular emissions. For that reason, we have studied the impact that cold ambient temperatures have on Euro 6 diesel and spark ignition (including: ga...

Evaluation of NO emissions of a retrofitted Euro 5 passenger car for the Horizon prize "Engine retrofit".

The Horizon 2020 prize for the "Engine Retrofit for Clean Air" aims at reducing the pollution in cities by spurring the development of retrofit technology for diesel engines. A Euro 5 passenger car was retrofitted with an under-floor SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) for NO catalyst in combination with a solid ammonia based dosing system as the NO reductant. The vehicle was tested both on the road and on the chassis dynamometer under various test cycles and ambient temperatures. The NO emissions were redu...

Solid Particle Number Emission Factors of Euro VI Heavy-Duty Vehicles on the Road and in the Laboratory.

Particulate matter (PM), and in particular ultrafine particles, have a negative impact on human health. The contribution of vehicle PM emissions to air pollution is typically quantified with emission inventories, which need vehicle emission factors as input. Heavy-duty vehicles, although they represent a small percentage of the vehicle population in nearly every major country, contribute the majority of the on-road PM emissions. However, the published data of modern heavy-duty vehicle emissions are scarce, ...

System based on thermal control of the HCCI technology developed for reduction of the vehicle NO emissions in order to fulfil the future standard Euro 7.

On the present the environmental protection belongs among the most important worldwide priorities. From this reason there is valid within the framework of the European Union the standard Euro, which is specifically defined in the transport area. Nowadays the actual issue of this standard is signed Euro 6. It is established in order to eliminate most of the undesirable air pollutants. However, there is already prepared a new and even stricter emission standard Euro 7. It is a well-known fact that the actual ...

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitrated analogs associated to particulate matter emission from a Euro V-SCR engine fuelled with diesel/biodiesel blends.

Among the new technologies developed for the heavy-duty fleet, the use of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) aftertreatment system in standard Diesel engines associated with biodiesel/diesel mixtures is an alternative in use to control the legislated pollutants emission. Nevertheless, there is an absence of knowledge about the synergic behaviour of these devices and biodiesel blends regarding the emissions of unregulated substances as the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Nitro-PAHs, both recogni...

History vs. legend: Retracing invasion and spread of Oxalis pes-caprae L. in Europe and the Mediterranean area.

Oxalis pes-caprae L. is a South African geophyte that behaves as an invasive in the eurimediterranean area. According to a long-established hypothesis, O. pes-caprae may have invaded Europe and the Mediterranean area starting from a single plant introduced in the Botanical Garden of Malta at the beginning of the 19th century. The aim of this work was to test this hypothesis, to track the arrival of O. pes-caprae in different countries of the Euro-Mediterranean area and to understand the pathways of spreadin...

Familial patterning and prevalence of male androphilia among Istmo Zapotec men and muxes.

Male androphilia (i.e., male sexual attraction to other adult males) is known to cluster within families. Some studies demonstrate that male androphilia clusters in both the paternal and maternal familial lines, whereas other studies demonstrated that it clusters only in the latter. Most of these studies were conducted in Euro-American populations where fertility is low and the sexual orientation of male relatives can sometimes be difficult to ascertain. These two factors can potentially confound the result...

A comparative analysis of pairwise dynamic integration and causality of stock markets, measured in common and domestic currency terms, is conducted to evaluate comprehensively how exchange rate fluctuations affec...

Depressive symptoms and muscle weakness: A two-way relation?

The potential association between depressive symptoms and dynapenia - i.e. muscle weakness - is limited to few, mainly cross-sectional, studies. We use SHARE (Survey on Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe) panel data to investigate whether the onset of dynapenia at 4-year follow-up can be explained by pre-existing (either at baseline, or at 2-year follow-up) depressive symptoms, or vice versa. Depressive symptoms were identified as a score of 4 or more on the 12-item EURO-D scale. Individuals were class...

Chaotization of internal motion of excitons in ultrathin layers by spin-orbit coupling.

We show that Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can generate chaotic behavior of excitons in two-dimensional semiconductor structures. To model this chaos, we study a Kepler system with spin-orbit coupling and numerically obtain a transition to chaos at a sufficiently strong coupling. The chaos emerges since the SOC reduces the number of integrals of motion as compared to the number of degrees of freedom. Dynamically, the dependence of the exciton energy on the spin orientation in the presence of SOC produces...

Imidazopyrazinones (IPYs): non-quinolone bacterial topoisomerase inhibitors showing partial cross-resistance with quinolones.

In our quest for new antibiotics able to address the growing threat of multi-drug resistant infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria, we have investigated an unprecedented series of non-quinolone bacterial topoisomerase inhibitors from the Sanofi patrimony, named IPYs for ImidazoPYrazinones as part of the IMI ENABLE organization. Hybridization of these historical compounds with the quinazolinediones, a known series of topoisomerase inhibitors, led us to a novel series of tricyclic IPYs that demonstrated ...

Psychological burden among women with polycystic ovarian syndrome in Oman: a case-control study.

Previous studies in Euro-American populations have shown that women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) have increased levels of "psychological burden". While PCOS has been reported in Arab countries such as Oman, there is a dearth of studies of the occurrence of psychological burden among PCOS women in the Arab region. This study aimed to compare sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of PCOS women diagnosed with non-PCOS women and prevalence of severity of depression, anxiety and stress and to ...

Singing it for "us": Team passion displayed during national anthems is associated with subsequent success.

The present research examined the link between passion displayed by team members during the singing of national anthems at UEFA Euro 2016 and team performance in the tournaments' 51 games. Drawing on social identity theorising, we hypothesised a positive relationship between passion and performance. Consistent with this hypothesis, results showed that teams that sang national anthems with greater passion went on to concede fewer goals. Moreover, results provided evidence that the impact of passion on the li...
