Clinical metagenomics (CMg) refers to as the application of metagenomic sequencing of clinical samples in order to recover clinically-relevant information. Due to the increasing access to next-generation sequencing (NGS) facilities, CMg is a gast-growing field. In this context, we held the second International Conference on Clinical Metagenomics (ICCMg2) in Geneva in October 2017. During the two days of the conference, several aspects of CMg were addressed, which we propose to summarize in the present manus...
Kocuria marina has recently emerged as a cause for catheter-related bloodstream infections in patients with underlying health complications. One K. marina strain was recently isolated from the lung tissues of a wild urban rat (Rattus rattus diardii) caught during rodent surveillance. Here, we present the draft genome of the first K. marina animal isolate, K. marina TRE150902.

The global area of biotech crops in 2016 increased from 179.7 million hectares to 185.1 million hectares, a 3% increase equivalent to 5.4 million hectares. Some 26 countries planted biotech crops, 19 of which were developing countries and seven were industrial. Information and data collected from various credible sources showed variations from the previous year. Fluctuations in biotech crop area (both increases and decreases) are influenced by factors including, among others, acceptance and commercializatio...
Two events have helped to shape protozoology/protistology as a specific scientific discipline. The first such event was the creation of the Society of Protozoologists in the US in 1947 (and of its Journal of Protozoology, first published in 1954), the second event was the the First International Conference on Protozoology, held in 1961 in Prague. The history of the Society of Protozoologists was comprehensively treated by Corliss (1998), the history of the Prague Conference is presented here as reminiscence...
Mangrove wetland receives nutrient-rich aquaculture effluent (AE) from nearby farming activities and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) from the production and usage of flame retardants. The effects of BDE-209 (the most common PBDE congener), AE and their combination on two true mangrove species, namely Kandelia obovata and Avicennia marina, were compared in a 6-month microcosm study. Results showed that K. obovata was more sensitive to these contaminants than A. marina, as reflected by its enhanced p...
To evaluate the antifungal activity of a fixed antibiotic combination (AC) containing tetracycline (TET), chloramphenicol (CAF), and colistimethate sodium (CS).
This paper presents the form and content of the sixteen scientific conferences "Rijeka and its Citizens in Medical History" ("Rijeka i Riječani u medicinskoj povjesnici") which were held in the period between 2000 and 2016 according to the archive data of the conference organizer Croatian Scientific Society for the History of Health Culture. It presents data about the beginning of science convention, some its organisational features and the number of participants. A total of 315 presentations, whose abstra...
In functional MRI (fMRI), faster acquisition via undersampling of data can improve the spatial-temporal resolution trade-off and increase statistical robustness through increased degrees-of-freedom. High quality reconstruction of fMRI data from undersampled measurements requires proper modeling of the data. We present an fMRI reconstruction approach based on modeling the fMRI signal as a sum of periodic and fixed rank components, for improved reconstruction from undersampled measurements.
High prevalence of arterial hypertension and low rate of blood pressure (BP) control in patients with arterial hypertension require more intensive approaches to antihypertensive therapy. Every patient with arterial hypertension is characterized by different predominant pathophysiologic mechanisms in different periods of his life. Because of impact on different pathophysiologic mechanisms combined antihypertensive therapy allows to achieve more pronounced BP reduction, decrease heterogeneity of response and ...

Combination therapy programs are the hallmark of the successful treatment of all forms of human malignancies. In this issue of Cell, Palmer and Sorger present data suggesting that cell culture results indicative of synergistic anticancer drug interactions rarely translate clinically and that the results of combination therapies in mouse models or human clinical trials, even if successful, are best explained by the independent activities of the individually administered drugs.
Exogenous phosphorus enhances cadmium tolerance by affecting cell wall polysaccharides in two mangrove seedlings Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh and Kandelia obovata (S., L.) Yong differing in cadmium accumulation.
Phosphorous (P) is an essential element that mediates various stresses in plants. In this study, the effects of P on polysaccharides in the root cell walls of two hydroponically cultivated mangrove seedlings (A. marina and K. obovata) that differ in Cd accumulation ability were examined in the context of Cd stress. The results showed that A. marina exhibited a higher degree of tolerance to Cd than K. obovata. In both mangrove seedlings, pectin and hemicellulose 1 increased significantly with increasing P le...
United against cancer: prevention to end-of-life care-highlights from the Uganda Cancer Institute-Palliative Care Association of Uganda Joint International Conference on Cancer and Palliative Care and the 7th Palliative Care Conference, 24-25 August 2017, Kampala, Uganda.
The Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) and the Palliative Care Association of Uganda (PCAU) jointly hosted an international conference on cancer and palliative care in August 2017 in Kampala, Uganda. At the heart of the conference rested a common commitment to see patient care improved across Uganda and the region. The theme - United Against Cancer: Prevention to End-of-Life Care - reflected this joint vision and the drive to remember that cancer care should include prevention, early diagnosis and screening, tre...
Trichocysts are a common cell organelle of ciliates and dinoflagellates. They are composed of trichocyst matrix proteins and have been intensely investigated and characterized in ciliates. Here, for the first time, data have been obtained for trichocyst matrix proteins of a dinoflagellate. A DELTA-BLAST search using 14 available and complete amino acid sequences of mature trichocyst matrix proteins of the ciliate Paramecium tetraurelia resulted in 16 hits for the dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina when the E va...

To study effects of a fixed azilsartan medoxomil/chlorthalidone combination (Edarbi Clo) on clinical, ambulatory and central blood pressure (BP) in patients with uncontrolled arterial hypertension (AH)).
Effective control of arterial pressure (AP) is achieved only in ⅓ of patients with arterial hypertension. It is especially difficult to achieve control of systolic (S) AP in elderly patients in whom SAP is the strongest prognostic factor of cardiovascular complications. Thiazide and thiazide-like diuretics and calcium antagonists are effective for lowering of elevated SAP and pulse (P) AP including aortic PAP elevation of which is associated with high stiffness of arterial wall and is typical for elderly ...
to assess adherence of patients to antihypertensive therapy with fixed perindopril and indapamide combination (FPIC) as well as to elucidate causes of changes of therapy after 6 months.
We propose simple inferential approaches for the fixed effects in complex functional mixed effects models. We estimate the fixed effects under the independence of functional residuals assumption and then bootstrap independent units (e.g. subjects) to conduct inference on the fixed effects parameters. Simulations show excellent coverage probability of the confidence intervals and size of tests for the fixed effects model parameters. Methods are motivated by and applied to the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of ...
The objective of this project was to prepare a dermatologic addendum to the 2012 Chapel Hill consensus conference nomenclature to address vasculitides affecting the skin. The goal was to standardize names and definitions for cutaneous vasculitis.
The prevalence of multicomponent therapy in treatment of cardiovascular diseases makes fixed combinations of drugs very useful. The fixed combination of rosuvastatin with ACE inhibitor lisinopril and calcium antagonist amlodipine allows to control effectively two main cardiovascular risk factors: hypercholesterolemia and arterial hypertension. The efficacy of each of the components and their combined administration in primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease has been demonstrated in clinic...
