The study also investigated the risk factors for contamination of dressed carcasses by Salmonella spp. at cottage poultry processor outlets where chickens are slaughtered and processed for sale.
OBJECTIVE To quantify vitamin D (VitD) concentrations in commercial dog foods and compare those concentrations with Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) recommendations and manufacturer-reported concentrations. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SAMPLE 82 commercial dog foods. PROCEDURES Samples of commercially available dog foods were obtained from owners of healthy dogs in the Guelph, ON, Canada, area and owners of dogs that were patients at the Ontario Veterinary College Health Sciences Cent...
Kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) is a high-acidity fruit, with two varieties available on the market. One is the green-fleshed, fuzzy, sweet but tangy-tasting kiwifruit, and the other is the yellow-fleshed variety called "golden" kiwifruit. While the whole kiwifruit is sold at room temperature at grocery stores, sliced kiwifruit is usually sold as a part of fruit salad in the refrigerated section. The survival of a five-strain Escherichia coli O157:H7 cocktail, a five-strain Salmonella cocktail, and a five-s...
Physician acceptance is an important dimension of access to care, especially for Medicaid patients. We constructed two new measures to quantify primary care physician (PCP) acceptance of Medicaid patients using geocoded Virginia physician addresses and population data and geospatial methods. For each Census block group, we measured the shares of "accessible PCPs" accepting any Medicaid patients or new Medicaid patients. Accessible PCPs were defined as those located within 30-minute travel from patient locat...
Soil degradation is an important threat to sustainable agriculture. In Bangladesh, brick production contributes to soil loss as the country relies on clay-rich soil for brick making. An in-depth understanding of why farmers sell soil and the corresponding impacts on agricultural productivity is critical for developing and implementing new policies for utilizing alternate materials and methods in Bangladesh and other areas that continue to rely on fired clay bricks as their primary building material. A team ...
In this article, the first coauthor, a patient with a basal cell carcinoma on her upper lip, discusses her experience with Mohs micrographic surgery for the treatment of the skin cancer. The second coauthor, who is the patient's physician (a dermatologist who shares her last name but is not a relative), diagnosed her skin cancer and referred her for Mohs surgery. The third coauthor, who is the patient's son and not only a dermatologist, but also a dermatopathologist and a Mohs surgeon (and also shares her l...
Phencyclidine (PCP, "angel dust", an arylcyclohexylamine) was the first non-natural, man-made illicit drug of abuse, and was coined 'the most dangerous drug in America" in the late 1970s (amidst sensational horror stories of the drug's effects); however, few other illicit drugs have had such a significant and broad impact on society - both good and bad. Originally developed as a new class of anesthetic, PCP-derived psychosis gave way to the PCP hypothesis of schizophrenia (later coined the NMDA receptor hyp...
While the two most widely used measures of market (industrial) concentration, the -firm concentration ratio and the Herfindahl-Hirschman index , have no precise functional relationship, they can be related by means of boundary formulations. Such bounds and potential relationships, which have been considered in some earlier reported studies, are being re-examined, corrected, and reformulated in this paper. The underlying analysis uses a different approach based on majorization theory and the results are sup...
The optimal temporal approach for reducing nicotine to minimally or nonaddictive levels in all cigarettes sold in the United States has not been determined.
University officials are increasingly considering selling alcoholic beverages at campus football stadiums. To inform this decision, we report on offenses occurring at a campus football stadium and surrounding community on game day weekends between 2009-2013. Campus police log data for 35 home football weekends were examined, accounting for 1,940 distinct incidents. There was a general upward trend in crime incidents. On average, 330 total crime incidents occurred when alcohol was not sold (2009-2011) compar...
BJN editorial board member Alan Glasper has been collecting historic photos of NHS nurses for a number of years, which he shares here to celebrate NHS70.
Food is one of the major sources of arsenic (As) exposure in humans. The objectives of this study were to determine the bioaccessible concentration of As in rice grain sold in Bangkok and to evaluate the potential health risks associated with rice consumption. Polished (n = 32) and husked (n = 17) jasmine rice were collected from local markets. In vitro digestion was performed to determine the bioaccessible As concentrations, which were used for probabilistic health risk assessments in different ag...
The study's objectives were to assess the extent to which packaged water producers follow product registration procedures and to assess the relationship between product registration and drinking water quality in Accra, Ghana. Following preliminary analysis of a national water quality survey, 118 packaged sachet water samples were collected by sampling all brands sold by 66 vendors. A sample of vendors was selected from two high-income and two low-income areas of Accra, Ghana. Sachet packaging and labelling ...
In Tanzania, traditional medicine plays a significant role in health care and local economies based on the harvesting, trade and sale of medicinal plant products. The majority of this plant material is said to originate from wild sources, and both traditional healers and vendors are concerned about the increasing scarcity of certain species.
During the latter half of the six-year long "Panic of 1873," nitrous-oxide pioneer G.Q. Colton developed, advertised, and sold his dentifrice, "Dr Colton's Vegetable Dentonic" to supplement his dental anesthetic enterprise.
Mikania glomerata Spreng. (MG) and Mikania laevigata Sch. Bip. ex Baker (ML), popularly known as guaco, are medicinal plants similar in morphology, chemical composition and medicinal uses. Both species are often used and sold without distinction; however, it is believed that their chemical composition is different.
As we celebrate the 70th birthday of the NHS, Clare Price-Dowd reflects on the pioneers of nursing and how leadership in the NHS, and in nursing, has changed over time, and shares some thoughts about the future.
The prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) has nearly doubled since 1980. Elevated body mass index (BMI) is the leading risk factor for T2D, mediated by inflammation and oxidative stress. Arsenic shares similar pathogenic processes, and may contribute to hyperglycemia and β-cell dysfunction.
Sex-determining mechanisms change repeatedly throughout evolution and it is difficult to track this continual process. The Japanese soil-frog Glandirana rugosa is a remarkable evolutionary witness to the ongoing process of the evolution of sex-determining modes. The two geographic groups, designated XY and Neo-ZW, have homologous sex chromosomes, yet display opposite types of sex-chromosomes, XX-XY and ZZ-ZW, respectively. These two groups are sympatric at the edges of their respective ranges in Central Jap...
Turmeric is a top selling dietary supplement (DS) in the United States with rapidly expanding usage. Therefore, turmeric DS formulations available for sale in an urban US retail marketplace were analyzed, and point of sale information was related to measures of quality relevant to safety.
Parkinson's disease (PD) shares pathological and clinical features with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) patients making the diagnosis challenging. Distinguishing PD from PSP is crucial given differences in disease course, treatment and clinical management.
The genome of the hyperthermophile Thermotoga maritima contains three isoforms of maltose binding protein (MBP) that are high affinity receptors for di-, tri- and tetra-saccharides. Two of these proteins (tmMBP1 and tmMBP2) share significant sequence identity, approximately 90%, while the third (tmMBP3) shares less than 40% identity. MBP from Escherichia coli (ecMBP) shares 35% sequence identity with the tmMBPs. This subset of MBP isoforms offer an interesting opportunity to investigate the mechanisms under...
The sperm-borne oocyte-activating factor (SOAF) resides in the sperm perinuclear theca (PT). A consensus has been reached that SOAF most likely resides in the post-acrosomal sheath (PAS), which is the first region of the PT to solubilize upon sperm-oocyte fusion. There are two SOAF candidates under consideration: PLCZ1 and WBP2NL. A mouse gene germline ablation of the latter showed that mice remain fertile with no observable phenotype despite the fact that a competitive inhibitor of WBP2NL, derived from its...
Osteoporosis is a multifactorial disease associated with inflammation and hormone imbalance. It is noteworthy that dry eye syndrome shares a similar pathophysiology with osteoporosis. Both diseases are more prevalent among the elderly and females. Dry eye syndrome can result in impaired vision, which increases the risk of fall and fracture when osteoporosis exists. In this study, we investigated whether osteoporosis is associated with an increased risk of developing dry eye syndrome.
Pancreatic islet amyloid deposition occurs before β-cell damage in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. The islet and Alzheimer's disease β-amyloid shares similar secondary structures. The Alzheimer's disease β-amyloid targeting tracer [F]FDDNP could be used to image pancreatic islet amyloid with PET.
