Obtaining or purchasing marijuana in the U.S. can be done only in certain states via a lawful market, for medical or non-medical (recreational) purposes, or via an unlawful market ("black market") by home cultivation and unlicensed vendors and individuals. Given the evolving U.S. state marijuana legislation landscape, the objective of this study is to describe individuals who report buying marijuana in the past year by selected characteristics and U.S. geographical location.
Amblyopia is a common developmental sensory disorder that has been extensively and systematically investigated as a unisensory visual impairment. However, its effects are increasingly recognized to extend beyond vision to the multisensory domain. Indeed, amblyopia is associated with altered cross-modal interactions in audiovisual temporal perception, audiovisual spatial and motion perception, and audiovisual speech perception. Furthermore, although the visual impairment in amblyopia is typically unilateral,...
Childhood amblyopia can be treated with binocular games or movies that rebalance contrast between the eyes, which is thought to reduce depth of interocular suppression so the child can experience binocular vision. While visual acuity gains have been reported following binocular treatment, studies rarely report gains in binocular outcomes (i.e., stereoacuity, suppression) in amblyopic children. Here, we evaluated binocular outcomes in children who had received binocular treatment for childhood amblyopia.
In recent years, amblyopia treatment device that can be used with both eyes open have been reported. The Occlu-pad is a device that can present images of tablet terminals to one eye only under binocular open conditions. Till date, no study has reported the effectiveness of Occlu-pad training for anisometropic amblyopia in a series of cases. In the present study, we evaluated the effectiveness of the Occlu-pad for the management of anisometropic amblyopia without the use of occlusion therapy (eyepatch).
This study evaluated macular thickness in deprivational amblyopia and compared it to matched controls.
Amblyopia is one of the most common visual disorders in children. Current therapy of amblyopia is an occlusion therapy of the stronger eye with an occlusion patch until the best corrected visual acuity is achieved. The success of occlusion therapy essentially depends on the compliance of the children and their parents. There is a commercially available 8 × 12 mm small TheraMon microsensor (TheraMon(®)-Chip, MC Technology GmbH). This sensor allows a simple objective documentation of the therapy compl...
To characterize current practice preferences of pediatric ophthalmologists in the management of amblyopia and whether these are influenced by demographic variables.
The results of medical laboratory testing are only useful if they lead to appropriate actions by medical practitioners and/or patients. An underappreciated component of the medical testing process is the transfer of the information from the laboratory report into the reader's brain. The format of laboratory reports can be determined by the testing laboratory, which may issue a formatted report, or by electronic systems receiving information from laboratories and controlling the report format. As doctors can...
Abnormal binocular experience during infancy or childhood from strabismus and/or anisometropia results in visual acuity deficits (eg, amblyopia) and impaired stereoacuity. These pediatric eye conditions have also been linked to slow reading and fine motor impairment.
Classically understood as a deficit in spatial vision, amblyopia is increasingly recognized to also impair audiovisual multisensory processing. Studies to date, however, have not determined whether the audiovisual abnormalities reflect a failure of multisensory integration, or an optimal strategy in the face of unisensory impairment. We use the ventriloquism effect and the maximum-likelihood estimation (MLE) model of optimal integration to investigate integration of audiovisual spatial information in amblyo...
Many reports present analyses of trends over time based on multiple years of data from National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) surveys and the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS). Trend analyses of NCHS data involve analytic choices that can lead to different conclusions about the trends. This report discusses issues that should be considered when conducting a time trend analysis using NCHS data and presents guidelines for making trend analysis choices. Trend analysis issues discussed include: choo...
Over the last decades there has been a decline in the recruitment of medical students into academia in all medical fields. Concurrently, medical research has increasingly included other disciplines in multidisciplinary convergence, introducing an unmet recruitment gap and requirement for medical researchers. To counteract the trend and recruit students to academic medicine, a national intercalated Medical Student Research Program (MSRP) was established in Norway in 2002. A preliminary evaluation in 2009 sug...
Defibrillator is an important first aid equipment with people attach importance to life and health in today, people pay more attention to the development of defibrillator. This paper reviews the development history of the defibrillator, gives a brief introduction to the structure and working principle of the defibrillator, and then analyzes the key technology of defibrillator, compares the mainstream products on the market and prospects the development trend of defibrillator.
There is still significant uncertainty as to whether market competition raises or lowers clinical quality in publicly funded healthcare systems. We attempted to assess the effects of market competition on inpatient care quality of stroke patients in a retrospective study of the universal single-payer health insurance system in Taiwan.
To determine the validity of the OPTEC 5500 vision screener (Stereo Optical Co., Inc., Chicago, IL) in assessing visual acuity and amblyopia in pediatric patients between the ages of 3 and 17 years by comparing it statistically to gold standard comprehensive ophthalmic examinations.
Soaring drug development costs, increasingly stringent regulatory requirements, and demanding market access environments have necessitated that pharmaceutical companies examine their research processes in order to provide novel and meaningful solutions for patients. In this paper, we describe an initiative that aims to incorporate a better appreciation of the exam room experience of both patients and practitioners into the drug development pathway from the earliest point of research. Focusing on 4 core pill...
In this study, we investigated the effect of optical treatment on sensory eye balance in anisometropic amblyopia. Fourteen individuals (age: 13.7 ± 8.4 years old) with previously untreated anisometropic amblyopia were enrolled in the study. The average magnitude of their anisometropia (spherical equivalent) was 4.02 ± 1.19 DS. Their best corrected monocular visual acuity and sensory eye balance were measured before and after a 2-month period of full refractive correction (i.e., our optical treatment). Spe...
Substandard and falsified medical products are a public health threat, primarily associated with low- and middle-income countries. Today, the phenomenon also exists in high-income countries. Increased Internet access has opened a global market. Self-diagnosis and self-prescription have boosted the market for unregulated websites with access to falsified medicines.
As the second largest pharmaceutical market with a great potential for future growth, China has drawn much attention from the global pharmaceutical community. With an increasing government investment in biomedical research, the domestic biopharmaceutical (biotechnological) companies in China are turning their attention to the development of innovative medicines and targeting the global market. To introduce innovative products to Chinese patients sooner, to improve the efficiency of its review and approval p...
Some single-use medical devices are reprocessed and reused in some countries in the world, but the regulatory approach is different, and in some countries it isn't regulated yet. In this article, the regulatory status quo of single-use medical devices is reviewed. The regulatory development, important regulatory documents and regulatory approaches of single-use medical device reprocessing in the United States, Germany and the UK are introduced. And how to perform scientific risk assessment and effective ris...
The objective of this study was to review games for amblyopia (lazy eye) that are commercially available in mobile applications (apps) stores and assess the involvement of eye care professionals in their development.
To evaluate the trend of catastrophic health expenses (CHE) for inpatient care in relation to the commencement of the New Cooperative Medical Scheme (NCMS) in rural China from 2003 to 2013, and the roles of NCMS in protecting affected households from CHE.
To determine the prevalence of amblyopia and its determinants in a population-based study in Mashhad County, Iran.
The medical device industry is an industry dealing with multiple types of products covering a wide range of applications. As the safety and effectiveness of medical devices are vital to human health, the products must be managed by strict regulations according to the different risk levels. A total product life cycle regulatory system including product design, manufacture, premarket gate keeping, and postmarket monitoring is a common framework for medical device regulations. However, the variety and innovati...
