The Legalization of Medical/Recreational Marijuana: Implications for School Health Drug Education Programs.

More than half of US states have legalized medical marijuana. Several states have also legalized it for recreational use. In spite of states' actions, marijuana remains illegal under federal law. It remains to be seen, however, if the Trump administration will enforce federal law in states that have legalized marijuana. For now, it appears the move toward state legalization of marijuana will increase. Because of its legal status, research concerning the medical benefits of marijuana has been limited.

Report formatting in laboratory medicine - a call for harmony.

The results of medical laboratory testing are only useful if they lead to appropriate actions by medical practitioners and/or patients. An underappreciated component of the medical testing process is the transfer of the information from the laboratory report into the reader's brain. The format of laboratory reports can be determined by the testing laboratory, which may issue a formatted report, or by electronic systems receiving information from laboratories and controlling the report format. As doctors can...

Intensity noise behavior of an InAs/InGaAs quantum dot laser emitting on ground states and excited states.

We experimentally and numerically study the amplitude stability of an InAs/InGaAs quantum dot laser emitting simultaneously on ground states (GSs) and excited state (ESs) at center wavelengths of 1245 and 1168 nm, respectively. The stability is quantified by a spectrally resolved noise current analysis that is dependent on the laser injection current. We find a non-monotonic behavior of the amplitude noise which shows a reduction of up to 4 dB when the GS and ES emit simultaneously. Simulations based on a...

Symmetries of Chimera States.

Symmetry broken states arise naturally in oscillatory networks. In this Letter, we investigate chaotic attractors in an ensemble of four mean-coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators with two oscillators being synchronized. We report that these states with partially broken symmetry, so-called chimera states, have different setwise symmetries in the incoherent oscillators, and in particular, some are and some are not invariant under a permutation symmetry on average. This allows for a classification of different ch...

Accumulation of bioactive metabolites in cultivated medical Cannabis.

There has been an increased use of medical Cannabis in the United States of America as more states legalize its use. Complete chemical analyses of this material can vary considerably between producers and is often not fully provided to consumers. As phytochemists in a state with legal medical Cannabis we sought to characterize the accumulation of phytochemicals in material grown by licensed commercial producers. We report the development of a simple extraction and analysis method, amenable to use by commerc...

Recent updates and challenges on the regulation of precision medicine: The United States in perspective.

The rapid progress in "omics", such as genomics, metabolomics, microbiomics, has paved the path for precision medicine and revolutionized the development of drugs and devices promising to meet unmet medical needs. The aim of the present study was to investigate the current regulatory framework established by the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) and to identify challenges and concerns through study of related literatures in the PubMed database. We found that efforts were made to facilitate ...

Correct knowledge of medical cannabis legal status in one's own state: Differences between adolescents and adults in the United States, 2004-2013.

Studies have found age-specific effects of medical cannabis laws (MCLs), particularly affecting adult cannabis use but not adolescent use. We examined whether age differences in MCL knowledge are in accordance with age differences in MCL effects on cannabis use.

The distribution of income is worse than you think: Including pollution impacts into measures of income inequality.

This paper calculates the distribution of an adjusted measure of income that deducts damages due to exposure to air pollution from reported market income in the United States from 2011 to 2014. The Gini coefficient for this measure of adjusted income is 0.682 in 2011, as compared to 0.482 for market income. By 2014, we estimate that the Gini for adjusted income fell to 0.646, while the market income Gini did not appreciably change. The inclusion of air pollution damage acts like a regressive tax: with air p...

National Center for Health Statistics Guidelines for Analysis of Trends.

Many reports present analyses of trends over time based on multiple years of data from National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) surveys and the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS). Trend analyses of NCHS data involve analytic choices that can lead to different conclusions about the trends. This report discusses issues that should be considered when conducting a time trend analysis using NCHS data and presents guidelines for making trend analysis choices. Trend analysis issues discussed include: choo...

Springboard to an academic career-A national medical student research program.

Over the last decades there has been a decline in the recruitment of medical students into academia in all medical fields. Concurrently, medical research has increasingly included other disciplines in multidisciplinary convergence, introducing an unmet recruitment gap and requirement for medical researchers. To counteract the trend and recruit students to academic medicine, a national intercalated Medical Student Research Program (MSRP) was established in Norway in 2002. A preliminary evaluation in 2009 sug...

Necessity for interrupted time series to analyze the effects of propoxyphene withdrawal from the market and health outcome trend estimates.

We read with great interest the study by Curtis et al.that examines time trends of opioid use among older adults with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in the United States. We think that certain additional methodologic and health policy considerations are necessary. First, the authors did not specify the selection process in the methods and did not specify missing value rates before selecting patients for analysis. This article is protected by copyright.
