Synthesis of tricyclic quinazolinone-iminosugars as potential glycosidase inhibitors via a Mitsunobu reaction.

A series of novel tricyclic quinazolinone-iminosugars 1 (a-c) were synthesized from the benzyl protected sugars through three steps. Firstly, the benzyl protected sugar (aldehyde) 5 reacted with o-aminobenzamide by the iodine-induced oxidative condensation to afford the corresponding aldo-quizanolinone 6. Secondly, through the intramolecular cyclization of the unprotected OH and the amide NH in 6, the tricyclic compounds 7 and 8 were constructed by the key Mitsunobu reaction. Finally, removal of the benzyl ...

Mitsunobu gets a makeover.

Synthesis of tricyclic benzimidazole-iminosugars as potential glycosidase inhibitors via a Mitsunobu reaction.

A series of tricyclic benzimidazole-iminosugars 1(a-f) and 2(a-f) were synthesized and evaluated for their their inhibitory activities against five glycosidases. The synthesis initiated from the benzyl protected sugar (aldehyde) 5 that reacted with 1,2-diaminobenzene to afford aldo-benzimidazole 6 by the iodine-induced oxidative condensation. Then, tricyclic compound 7 was obtained in high yields of 73%-87% by the key Mitsunobu reaction through intramolecular cyclization of the unprotected OH and the NH in ...

Trekstock Meet & Move: The Impact of One-Day Health and Well-Being Events for Young Adults with Cancer.

To evaluate the impact of a series of one-day events delivered by Trekstock, a cancer charity supporting young adults with cancer in the United Kingdom. Data on physical activity, mood, perceived support, self-efficacy, and confidence to be active were collected at three time points: before, after, and 2 weeks following the Meet & Move events. Ninety-seven young adults with cancer (mean age: 29 years, 35% still receiving active treatment) attended a Trekstock Meet & Move event and participated within the ...

Cohort selection for clinical trials: n2c2 2018 shared task track 1.

Track 1 of the 2018 National NLP Clinical Challenges shared tasks focused on identifying which patients in a corpus of longitudinal medical records meet and do not meet identified selection criteria.

Developing classification criteria for skin-predominant dermatomyositis: the Delphi process.

The European League Against Rheumatism / American College of Rheumatology (EULAR / ACR) classification criteria for inflammatory myopathies are able to classify patients with skin-predominant dermatomyositis (DM). However, approximately 25% of patients with skin-predominant DM do not meet 2 out of the 3 hallmark skin signs and fail to meet the criteria.

Overcoming bashfulness: how cocaine aided Freud to summon the courage to meet Charcot.

Jean-Martin Charcot, the most celebrated neurologist of the 19th century, had a profound influence on Sigmund Freud's career. Freud spent the winter of 1885-1886 working in Charcot's neurology department in Paris. During this period, he went to Charcot's house on several occasions to participate in the very famous Tuesday soirées under the guidance of Gilles de la Tourette. Freud was always very proud to be invited and curious to meet the Parisian intellectual elite. On these occasions, however, he was ver...

Synthesis of enantiopure ε-oxapipecolic acid.

A six-step synthesis of orthogonally-protected (S)-ε-oxapipecolic acid is described, starting from a commercially available glutamate diester. The approach features an mCPBA-mediated amine oxidation and intramolecular Mitsunobu reaction to form the tetrahydrooxazine ring. The enantiopure building block was employed in the synthesis of a short model peptide to determine the amide rotamer preference N-terminal to the cyclic residue. In contrast to pipecolic acid, which exhibits a high cis amide population, t...

How Should Public Health Schools Help Meet Millennium Development Goals in Latin America?

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are a set of 8 aims adopted by the United Nations to create a more peaceful, prosperous, and just world. Four MDGs directly concern public health, and public health schools should be involved in meeting them. The Johns Hopkins University-directed Fogarty Global Infectious Disease Research Training Program in Peru and Bolivia, funded by the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health, has spanned nearly 3 decades and provides a case study of how l...

Toward the Synthesis of Yuzurimine-Type Alkaloids: Stereoselective Construction of the Heterocyclic Portions of Deoxyyuzurimine and Macrodaphnine.

The heterocyclic portions of yuzurimine-type alkaloids, such as deoxyyuzurimine and macrodaphnine, were synthesized by using a stereoselective hydroboration-oxidation reaction to install the C20 methyl group, the intramolecular Mitsunobu reaction to construct the E-ring portion, and the intramolecular S2 reaction to construct the F-ring portion as key steps.

Development of a sulfidogenic bioreactor system for removal of co-existent selenium, iron and nitrate from drinking water sources.

The present study showed for the first time that selenium, iron, and nitrate could be simultaneously removed in a sulfidogenic bioreactor to meet drinking water standards. A bioreactor inoculated with mixed bacterial consortium was operated for around 330 days in anoxic environment at 30 °C under varying combination of influent selenate (200-1000 μg/L as selenium), and iron (3-10 mg/L) in presence of 50 mg/L of nitrate. Required amount of acetic acid (as carbon source) and sulfate were supplied a...
