Men's Participation and Performance in the Boston Marathon from 1897 to 2017.

This study examined men's participation and performance in the Boston Marathon. Data from all 368,940 official male finishers in the Boston Marathon from 1897 through 2017 were analyzed using different analyses and regression models for all runners, annual top hundred finishers, annual top ten finishers and annual winners. Effect of calendar year on race time was examined alone, in a uni-variable model, and together with country of origin and weather conditions (average air temperature and precipitation) in...

New data from the Italian National Register of Congenital Coagulopathies, 2016 Annual Survey.

In Italy, the National Register of Congenital Coagulopathies (NRCC) collects epidemiological and therapeutic data from patients affected by haemophilia A (HA), haemophilia B (HB), von Willebrand's disease (vWD) and other rare coagulation disorders. The objectives of this paper were to evaluate the occupational radiation exposure data from 2011 to 2017 and to compare the results with status in 1996-2010 periods. The evaluation was performed in terms of annual collective effective dose, the average annual effective dose, the individual dose distribution ratio and the annual collective effective dose distribution ratio. Irrespective of work category, the results indicate that the average effective dose ranged from 0.64 to 1.55 mSv and broadly comparable ...

Brief history of the Asiatic International Society of Hematology: our roots of international cooperation with Asian countries.

This year, 2018, marks the 60th anniversary of the Asiatic International Society of Hematology founded in 1958 and it seems to be a fitting occasion on which to reflect on our roots of the international cooperation with Asian countries. The Japanese Society of Hematology held the first meeting of the Asiatic International Society of Hematology in 1958 in Nagoya. Hematologists representing at least 10 Asian countries or districts, including Australia, Burma, Ceylon, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Philip...

Selection of abstracts from the scientific sessions of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, Philadelphia PA June 23-26, 2018.

This mini-review highlights cardiovascular studies that were presented during the 2018 Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) annual meeting in Philadelphia. The aim of this review is to inform readers about several noteworthy studies reported at the meeting. Although cardiovascular application of PET and SPECT are not the primary focus of the SNMMI, several scientific teams working in this field presented their latest scientific findings at this meeting. The review therefore aims to info...

Identifying windows of susceptibility for maternal exposure to ambient air pollution and preterm birth.

Maternal exposure to ambient air pollution has been associated with preterm birth (PTB), however, entire pregnancy or trimester-specific associations were generally reported, which may not sufficiently identify windows of susceptibility. Using birth registry data from Guangzhou, a megacity of southern China (population ~14.5 million), including 469,975 singleton live births between January 2015 and July 2017, we assessed the association between weekly air pollution exposure and PTB in a retrospective cohort...

Annual Injection of Zoledronic Acid Improves Bone Status in Children with Cerebral Palsy and Rett Syndrome.

Osteoporosis is a common complication of cerebral palsy and Rett's syndrome. It is responsible for multiple fractures, bone pain, and impaired quality of life. In case of Rett's syndrome, a specific dysfunction of osteoblasts causes bone fragility. We observed the effects of annual zoledronic acid (ZA) infusion in a cohort of children with cerebral palsy and Rett's syndrome. 27 children under 18 years (19 with cerebral palsy and 8 girls with Rett syndrome confirmed by MCEP2 mutation) were treated with an a...

Rainfall erosivity in Slovenia: Sensitivity estimation and trend detection.

Slovenia is one of the EU countries with the largest values and largest amounts of variability in rainfall erosivity, with maximum annual values exceeding 10,000 MJ mm ha h yr. Five-minute rainfall data was analysed from 10 Slovenian rainfall stations with data-length availability longer than 25 years with a maximum data length of 69 years and a total data-station length equal to 443 years. Trends in the rainfall erosivity R-factor were detected for four different sub-samples using monthly, half-year,...

Re: 'Clearance of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) carriage: a comparative study of NDM-1 and KPC CPE' by Lim et al. (2018).

LIM ET AL: presented data on the clearance of CPE carriage and stated that NDM-1 isolates are cleared at higher rates than KPC isolates. However, we provide evidence that this conclusion cannot be easily drawn, as important data are missing. From the presented data it is likely that many of the 147 cases were the result of a nosocomial transmission and therefore some clones are probably overrepresented, which could distort results. No molecular characterization of isolates was performed to exclude transmiss...

Another Look at WIC's Breastfeeding Data: State Totals Reveal More Than Regional Averages.

Breastfeeding is known to be the most beneficial way of feeding infants, but 68% of the infants enrolled in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children are fully formula fed (FFF). Mandated annual reports about breastfeeding aggregate data from the states into regions, which obscures important information. Research Aim: The aim of this study is to reexamine the data supplied by the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and...

Using spatial interpolation to determine impacts of annual snowfall on traffic crashes for limited access freeway segments.

Snowfall affects traffic safety by impacting vehicle performance, driver behavior, and the transportation infrastructure. Depending on intensity snowfall can reduce visibility, pavement friction performance, vehicle stability and maneuverability. Based on this premise, the objective of this study was to use spatial interpolation to analyze the effects of annual snowfall on crash occurrence at non-interchange freeway segment locations in Michigan. Using the geostatistical method of Ordinary Kriging, site spe...

Annual Meeting of the International Society of Cancer Metabolism (ISCaM): Cancer Metabolism.

Tumors are metabolic entities wherein cancer cells adapt their metabolism to their oncogenic agenda and microenvironmental influences. Metabolically different cancer cell subpopulations collaborate to optimize nutrient delivery with respect to immediate bioenergetic and biosynthetic needs. They can also metabolically exploit host cells. These metabolic networks are directly linked with cancer progression, treatment, resistance, and relapse. Conversely, metabolic alterations in cancer are exploited for antic...

Prospects for national biological big data centers.

In the era of big data, scientific big data have become the new driving force for both science and technology innovation and social and economic development. China is a powerhouse in generating vast quantities of biological data, which are an essential strategic resource for population health and national security. The current situation of data loss due to the isolated data storage and the lack of systematic data monitoring and management, and the heavy dependency on international biological data centers ur...
