The purpose of this manuscript is to describe the regulatory, technological, and training considerations for audiologists investigating telehealth and to offer some examples of audiology services provided through telehealth.
A better understanding of innate responses induced by vaccination is critical for designing optimal vaccines. Here, we studied the diversity and dynamics of the NK cell compartment after prime-boost immunization with the modified vaccinia virus Ankara using cynomolgus macaques as a model. Mass cytometry was used to deeply characterize blood NK cells. The NK cell subphenotype composition was modified by the prime. Certain phenotypic changes induced by the prime were maintained over time and, as a result, the...
The evolution of digital health is entwined with federal regulation and policy. Whether considering what is or is not a medical device, the reimbursement for digital medical technologies, or physician services under Medicare or Medicaid related to remote patient monitoring or telehealth, the rules and policies governing digital health have not been easy to distinguish. In the face of rapid innovation, it has been difficult to fit these products and services into existing regulations of the Food and Drug Adm...
This paper offers a new way of understanding the course of a chronic, neurological condition through a comprehensive model of patient-reported determinants of health and wellbeing: The Patient Reported ImpleMentation sciEnce (PRIME) model is the first model of its kind to be based on patient-driven insights for the design and implementation of initiatives that could improve tertiary, primary, and community healthcare services for patients with refractory epilepsy, and has broad implications for other disord...
In 2014, insurers paid an average of 13-14 percent less for in-network mental health services in their commercial and Medicare Advantage plans than fee-for-service Medicare paid for identical services-despite paying up to 12 percent more than Medicare when the same services were provided by other physician specialties. However, patients went out of network more frequently for mental health services than for comparison services, which increased their average cost-sharing payments.
Some patients calling ambulance services (known as Emergency Medical Services internationally) are not transported to hospital. In England, national ambulance quality indicators show considerable variation in non-transport rates between the ten large regional ambulance services. The aim of this study was to explain variation between ambulance services in two types of non-transport: discharge at scene and telephone advice.
The congruency effect in distractor-interference tasks is typically smaller after incongruent trials than after congruent trials. Current views posit that this congruency sequence effect (CSE) reflects control processes that come into play when an irrelevant distractor cues a different response than a relevant target. However, the CSE is counterintuitively larger in the prime-probe task when the prime is occasionally a second target than when the prime is more frequently a distractor. In the present study, ...
Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions have a significant impact on the health and operational readiness of military members. The Canadian Forces Health Services (CFHS) provides a spectrum of health services in managing Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel health care needs with on-base and off-base services provided by civilian and uniformed health care professionals, including chiropractors. Although chiropractic services are available in US DoD and VA systems, little is known about the facilitators and barrie...
We estimated the use of any dental services and the use of specific types of dental services conditional on any dental use for adults 50 and over in the United States to analyze: a) disparities in the use of specialized dental services and b) whether older adults receiving routine dental care use fewer expensive specialized dental services.
We evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of (i) an intradermal HIV-DNA regimen given with/without intradermal electroporation (EP) as prime and (ii) the impact of boosting with modified vaccinia virus Ankara (HIV-MVA) administered with or without subtype C CN54rgp140 envelope protein adjuvanted with Glucopyranosyl Lipid A (GLA-AF) in volunteers from Tanzania and Mozambique.
Drop-in centers offer a range of services to assist unaccompanied youth experiencing homelessness, but little is known about their perceptions of drop-in centers or use of different services. A random sample of 273 youth experiencing homelessness in the Los Angeles area who had ever used a drop-in center was surveyed. Most youth heard about local drop-in centers from peers (65.1%). They generally reported positive perceptions of the drop-in center environment, staff, and clients; overall, 57.8% were "very" ...
CLinical pharmacy services (CPS) are professional services provided by pharmacists, who use their skills and knowledge to take an active role in patient health. These services have expanded in health systems around the world. However, it is important to have a comprehensive understanding of factors that may hinder the implementation of CPS in health systems.
Maternal and child protection services ("PMI") are French universal services providing prevention and health promotion services to parents and their newborn children up to the age of 6. They specifically offer home visitation services in order to reach families that could not be seen otherwise. This paper presents the results of a national survey describing these home visitation services and their local implantation. Sixty French ?départements? (59%), constituting the territorial unit for the PMI answered ...
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth are more than twice as likely to attempt suicide than their peers. Although LGBT-specific crisis services have been developed, little is known about the need for these services beyond that of general lifeline services.
Increasing the use of high-value medical services and reducing the use of services with little or no clinical value are key goals for efficient health systems. Yet encouraging the use of high-value services may unintentionally affect the use of low-value services. We examined the likelihood of high- and low-value service use in the first two years after an insurance benefit change in 2011 for one state's employees that promoted use of high-value preventive services. In the intervention group, compared to a ...
A novel PCR assay detected IgE M1 prime transcripts in nasal polyps of patients with CRSwNP and asthma, confirming that IgE switching occurred and membrane IgE-expressing B cells were resident at mucosal sites.
We investigated if the subliminal processing of threatening animal (snakes and spiders) and neutral object (cars and houses) stimuli can influence the discrimination of a subsequent visible stimulus. The prime and target pair were either identical, of the same category but with different physical features, or different in category and physical features. In two experiments, participants discriminated the basic level category (e.g. snake vs. spider) of a visible target stimulus that had been preceded by a vis...
Female sex workers (FSWs) in many settings have restricted access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. We therefore conducted an implementation study to test a 'diagonal' intervention which combined strengthening of FSW-targeted services (vertical) with making public health facilities more FSW-friendly (horizontal). We piloted it over 18 months and then assessed its performance.
The Israeli Medical Corps provides a great deal of medical services by its own medical personnel and purchases some services from various civilian suppliers, including public hospitals. Although the IDF has bought hospital services since it's early days, few attempts have been made to purchase primary and secondary medical services for soldiers in rear units. This article presents an analysis of the outsourcing project ("Aviv" project) of medical services for rear units which was operating between the years...
Two experiments are reported which investigate the effect of processing words prior to naming target pictures. In Experiment 1, participants named (read aloud) sequences of five printed prime words and five target pictures from the same semantic category, and also sequences of five prime words from a different unrelated semantic category to the five related target pictures. Picture and words were interleaved, with two unrelated filler stimuli in between prime and target stimuli (i.e. a lag of 3 between prim...
Immunohistology is essential to the practice of modern surgical and cytopathology. There are 3 major types of immunohistologic services provided in clinical practice: traditional immunohistochemistry, morphometric analysis of tumor immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence. Proper Current Procedural Terminology coding for these services has been updated to reflect current medical practice. Subsequent to changes in the Current Procedural Terminology coding structure for these services, the valuation of th...
Social services are increasingly commissioned to third and for-profit sector providers, but little is known about whether and how these changes influence quality indicators. We assessed quality-related outcomes across for-profit, public and third sector organisations delivering social care services.
Knowing the profile of individuals who demand health services or professionals could help in the improvement and reorganization of services. However, this subject is still underexplored among adolescents. This study aimed to describe and identify characteristics related to the demand for health services or professionals by Brazilian students.
national reports highlight deficiencies in the care of older patients undergoing surgery. A 2013 survey showed less than a third of NHS trusts had geriatrician-led perioperative medicine services for older surgical patients. Barriers to establishing services included funding, workforce and limited interspecialty collaboration. Since then, national initiatives have supported the expansion of geriatrician-led services for older surgical patients. This repeat survey describes geriatrician-led perioperative med...
The opiate crisis in Canada, among other causes, has led to increased demand and wait times for addiction-related services. One response to this situation has been for Canadians to seek crowdfunding support for services outside of the public system. However, little is known about how large this practice is, what addiction-related services Canadians seek, and what the implications of this practice are.
