Heat-stress memory is responsible for acquired thermotolerance in Bangia fuscopurpurea.

The environmental stresses that sessile organisms experience usually fluctuate dramatically and are often recurrent. Terrestrial plants can acquire memory of exposure to sub-lethal heat stress to acquire thermotolerance and survive subsequent lethal high-temperature stress; however, little is known concerning whether seaweeds acquire thermotolerance via heat-stress memory. We have demonstrated that the red seaweed Bangia fuscopurpurea can indeed acquire memory of sub-lethal high-temperature stress, resultin...

Management of HCV in Children in the Era of DAA's.

Chronic hepatitis C certainly is a global health burden in children as well as in adults. Spontaneous viral clearance can occur in early childhood but is uncommon thereafter. Although the majority of cases are asymptomatic during childhood and young adulthood, without an effective treatment, children who acquire HCV via vertical transmission can develop chronic liver disease and other complications including end stage liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma in adulthood. Efforts from worldwide health org...

How do Hearing Aid Owners Acquire Hearing Aid Management Skills?

Clinical studies have found up to 90% of hearing aid owners demonstrate difficulty with basic hearing aid management tasks and almost 50% of hearing aid owners self-report not receiving enough practical help from their clinician regarding how to use their hearing aid. Although studies have highlighted the overwhelming amount of information and training required to learn how to use a hearing aid appropriately, a gap remains in the literature regarding the range of methods by which hearing aid owners acquire ...

Comparison of 20-gauge Procore® and 22-gauge Acquire® needles for EUS-FNB of solid pancreatic masses: an observational study.

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle biopsy (EUS-FNB) has been proposed to obtain high-quality tissue samples for pancreatic tumors. We performed an observational study to compare EUS-FNB with a 20-gauge Procore® needle versus a 22-gauge Acquire® needle. Our primary endpoint was the quantity of the obtained tissue, as defined by the mean cumulative length of tissue core biopsies per needle pass.

Human babesiosis.

Babesiosis is a worldwide emerging tick-borne disease that is increasing in frequency and geographic range. It imposes a significant health burden, especially on those who are immunocompromised and those who acquire the infection through blood transfusion. Death from babesiosis occurs in up to 20 percent of these groups. Diagnosis is confirmed with identification of typical intraerythrocytic parasites on a thin blood smear or Babesia DNA using PCR. Treatment consists of atovaquone and azithromycin or clinda...

Trials with small QALY benefits can be badly misinterpreted.

Fobelets et al. present an economic analysis of a trial designed to increase rates of vaginal birth after caesarean section, OptiBIRTH (Fobelets et al., BJOG, 2017;XXXXXX). They use a common health economic tool (the 'incremental cost-utility ratio' [ICUR], which is often used interchangeably with the more widely known 'incremental cost-effectiveness ratio' [ICER]) to express the ratio at which resources must be spent to acquire more health and judge whether this is a good use of health service resources....

Red-light stimulation of boar semen prior to artificial insemination improves field fertility in farms: a worldwide survey.

A survey of in vivo fertility data from 31 pig farms distributed worldwide was conducted to determine whether stimulating boar semen with LED-based red-light increases its reproductive performance following artificial insemination (AI). Red-light stimulation with MaXipig was found to increase farrowing rates (mean±S.E.M., control: 87.2%±0.4% vs. light-stimulation 90.3%±0.5%) and the number of both total and live newborn piglets. Red-light stimulation increased farrowing rates in 27 farms, with an increas...

Migraine is not the most common comorbidity in hidradenitis suppurativa patients.

Migraine is the most common primary headache syndrome worldwide, affecting approximately 12% of the Caucasian population [1]. Migraine has been associated with various cardiovascular [2] and psychiatric co-morbidities [3], more recently inflammatory disorders such as psoriasis [4] and inflammatory bowel disease [5]. As hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) shares common comorbidity risks, we sought to investigate the possible link between migraine and HS. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Global plant-symbiont organization and emergence of biogeochemical cycles resolved by evolution-based trait modelling.

One of the most distinct but unresolved global patterns is the apparent variation in plant-symbiont nutrient strategies across biomes. This pattern is central to our understanding of plant-soil-nutrient feedbacks in the land biosphere, which, in turn, are essential for our ability to predict the future dynamics of the Earth system. Here, we present an evolution-based trait-modelling approach for resolving (1) the organization of plant-symbiont relationships across biomes worldwide and (2) the emergent conse...
