to assess potential failures in the care process with orthotics, prosthetics and special materials in a high-complexity hospital.
Despite strong support for the role of emotional relief in deliberate self-harm (DSH), no research has examined the impact of emotional distress on the strength of the DSH-relief association. Thus, it remains unclear whether the association of DSH with emotional relief is stable across emotional contexts or context-dependent. This study aimed to examine if the implicit DSH-relief association is stronger in the context of emotional distress (relative to a neutral emotional context).
The Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education requires monitoring of resident clinical and educational hours but does not require tracking daily work patterns or duty hour equity. Lack of such monitoring may allow for inequity that affects resident morale. No defined system for resident relief of weekday operating room (OR) clinical duties existed at our institution, leaving on-call residents to independently decide daily relief order. We developed an automated decision support tool (DST) to impro...
Studies on laser phototherapy for pain relief have used parameters that vary widely and have reported varying outcomes. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal parameter ranges of laser phototherapy for pain relief by analyzing data aggregated from existing primary literature.
The relief from an aversive event is rewarding. Since organisms are able to learn which environmental cues can cease an aversive event, relief learning helps to better cope with future aversive events. Literature data suggest that relief learning is affected in various psychopathological conditions, such as anxiety disorders. Here, we investigated the role of the mesolimbic dopamine system in relief learning. Using a relief learning procedure in Sprague Dawley rats, we applied a combination of behavioral ex...
Recently, an optical waveguide display device that has light weight, high transparency, and full color has become more and more popular in the wearable augmented reality display application. But existing waveguide display devices are less than satisfactory because of cost, safety, and mass production. Therefore, a type of surface-relief optical waveguide display device is proposed in this paper. First, the geometrical relationship of a waveguide display device structure is confirmed according to the design ...
Periarticular analgesic injection (PAI) is being used more commonly for pain relief after orthopaedic surgeries. However, there is conflicting evidence regarding the effectiveness of PAI for post-THA pain relief.
Inconsistent evidence shows a small amount of pain relief early (one week to 3 months) with corticosteroid (CS) injections and an equally small improvement in pain relief and function later (3 to 12 months) with hyaluronic acid (HA) injections (strength of recommendation [SOR]: B, meta-analysis of a randomized controlled trial and inconsistent RCTs). Guidelines state that CS injections can be considered for symptomatic knee osteoarthritis, but that insufficient evidence exists to recommend HA injections (SO...
Patient expectations are related to treatment outcome across a broad variety of patient conditions. Here we sought to examine factors associated with the expectation of complete relief from treatment for spinal pain.
Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a nerve pain disease usually controlled by different therapies, i.e., topical therapies, antiepileptics, analgesics, antipsychotics, antidepressants, anti-dementia drugs, antivirals, amitriptyline, fluphenazine, and magnesium sulfate. It is believed that different therapies may lead to different levels of pain relief.
Joint contractures are the main characteristics for children with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita. Orthoses are often used to enable or facilitate walking.
The pain of childbirth is arguably the most severe pain that most women will endure in their lifetime. Epidural analgesia is widely used as an effective method of pain relief in labor. It provides almost complete relief of pain if administered timely, and does not affect the progress of the first stage labor.
Various natural and manmade disasters during last decades have highlighted the need of further improving on governmental preparedness to emergency events, and a relief supplies distribution problem named Inventory Slack Routing Problem (ISRP) has received increasing attentions. In an ISRP, inventory slack is defined as the duration between reliefs arriving time and estimated inventory stock-out time. Hence, a larger inventory slack could grant more responsive time in facing of various factors (e.g., traffic...
Arthritis is a chronic disease of joints. It is highly prevalent, particularly in the elderly, and is commonly associated with pain that interferes with quality of life. Because of its chronic nature, pharmacological approaches to pain relief and joint repair must be safe for long term use, a quality many current therapies lack. Nutraceuticals refer to compounds or materials that can function as nutrition and exert a potential therapeutic effect, including the relief of pain, such as pain related to arthrit...
Surface relief gratings and refractive index gratings are formed by direct holographic recording in amorphous chalcogenide nanomultilayer structures As2S3-Se and thin films As2S3. The evolution of the grating parameters, such as the modulation of refractive index and relief depth in dependence of the holographic exposure, is investigated. Off-axis digital holographic microscopy is applied for the measurement of the photoinduced phase gratings. For the high-accuracy reconstruction of the wavefront (amplitude...
Patient-controlled analgesia using remifentanil (remifentanil PCA) has been used as a new form of pain relief during labour since soon after its release on the market. Reduction in pain scores lasts for 1 to 2 hours, and the analgesia is inferior to that of an epidural. Remifentanil PCA can be an alternative for epidural analgesia in cases where the woman cannot or does not want to receive epidural anaesthesia. In some hospitals in the Netherlands remifentanil PCA is being used on a large scale, possibly be...
The aim of this study was to assess the utility of pressure algometry (PA) to measure pain relief in the medial part of the knee after a closing-wedge high tibial osteotomy (CWHTO).
Cervicogenic dizziness is a sensation of disequilibrium caused by abnormal afferent activity from the neck. Its diagnosis and treatment are challenging. In a case of cervicogenic dizziness, we performed diagnostic upper cervical medial branch nerve blocks with near complete symptomatic relief for around 20 hours. Radiofrequency ablation of these nerves resulted in near complete relief for 7 months. Subsequent repeat ablations provided the same relief lasting for 6-10 months. This case suggests that upper ce...
Cajal cells serve as the pacemaker cells of the gastrointestinal tract and regulates peristalsis. On the baisis of that fact, it has been hypothesized that a decrease in Cajal cells can lead to gastroparesis and other motility issues. Treatment with medications has a limited efficacy and most resort to gastric electrical stimulation (GES) devices for symptomatic relief. We believe that the number of Cajal cells present is directly proportional to symptomatic relief with GES.
Foot pain and paresthesia are common in cycling, due to plantar pressure and repetitive loading.
Lidocaine infusion therapy (LIT) is an effective treatment for relieving neuropathic pain (NeP). However, it remains unclear whether pain relief can be sustained through repeated lidocaine infusions. This study aimed to determine whether repeated intravenous administration of low-dose lidocaine could provide prolonged pain relief in patients with specific NeP conditions.
Association of Inhaled Corticosteroids and Long-Acting β-Agonists as Controller and Quick Relief Therapy With Exacerbations and Symptom Control in Persistent Asthma: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.
Combined use of inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting β-agonists (LABAs) as the controller and the quick relief therapy termed single maintenance and reliever therapy (SMART) is a potential therapeutic regimen for the management of persistent asthma.
Categories of noncurative surgery for retroperitoneal sarcoma include: i) grossly incomplete resection (R2) of primary or locally recurrent tumor; ii) resection in the setting of distant metastatic disease; and iii) true palliative-intent symptom-directed surgery. The value of R2 resection is debatable, since most series do not report initial operative intent. Debulking surgery provides symptom relief in the majority of patients, but relief is generally not durable. Quality of life is poorly studied.
Neuropathic pain is a subset of chronic pain that is caused by neurons that are damaged or firing aberrantly in the peripheral or central nervous systems. The treatment guidelines for neuropathic pain include antidepressants, calcium channel α 2 delta ligands, topical therapy, and opioids as a second line option. Unfortunately, pharmacotherapy has not been effective in the treatment of neuropathic pain except in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia with carbamazepine. The inability to properly treat neuro...
There are currently no national competency standards upon which to develop educational objectives for prosthetist/orthotists in Sweden. While standards have been developed in other countries, they cannot be applied without confirming their relevance in a Swedish context.
