Academic drug discovery is a vital component to current drug discovery and development environments. In this study we investigated 798 drug discovery projects that took place between 1991 and 2015 at 36 academic institutions in the US. The observed success rates of academic drug discovery and development were 75% at Phase 1, 50% at Phase 2, 59% at Phase 3, and 88% at the new drug application/biologics license application (NDA/BLA) phase. These results were similar to the corresponding success rates of the p...
This review aims to (1) assess the breadth of pediatric orthopaedic research in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and (2) determine the impact of academic collaboration (an LMIC and a non-LMIC investigator) in published LMIC research.
The aims of this study were to describe nurses' perceptions of nursing activities and analyze for consistency with top-of-license (TOL) practice.
International/intercontinental collaboration is necessary to set up new innovative clinical trials for cancer treatment. However, the infrastructure, especially Asia-Europe academic partnerships, to enable such collaboration has not been fully structured and differences and similarities between the research groups have not been well studied. In 2015, collaboration started between the biggest cancer research organizations in Asia and EU, Japan Clinical Oncology Group (JCOG) and European Organisation for Rese...
This paper outlines the inter-professional collaboration of the authors, a PhD student, his supervisor and an information professional, to systematically search the literature for an ill-defined concept. The research question posed for the scoping literature review indicated that the topic, the subjective socio-economic status and health of adults with intellectual disabilities, was rare. The need for a methodological search process was therefore identified and successfully carried out. The paper presents a...

Traditional views suggest that growth hormone and the growth hormone receptor (GH/GHR complex) exert their functions only on the plasma membrane. This paradigm, however, has been challenged by recent new findings that the GH/GHR complex could translocate into cell nuclei where they could still exhibit important physiological functions. We also reported the nuclear localization of porcine GH/GHR and their potential functions in porcine hepatocytes. However, the basic path of pGH/GHR's nuclear translocation r...
Transdisciplinary teams are increasingly regarded as integral to conducting effective research. Similarly, knowledge translation is often seen as a solution to improving the relevance and benefits of health research. Yet, whether, how, for whom and under which circumstances transdisciplinary research influences knowledge translation is undertheorised, which limits its potential impact. The proposed research aims to identify the contexts and mechanisms by which transdisciplinary research contributes to devel...
The European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), like many other research funders, requires its grantees to make papers available via open access (OA). This article investigates the effect of publishing in OA journals and international collaboration within and between European and sub-Saharan African countries on citation impact and likelihood of falling into the top 1% and top 10% most cited papers in poverty-related disease (PRD) research.
Hazard and disaster research requires a willingness to step outside of traditional disciplinary ontological and epistemological assumptions to both accommodate and integrate different perspectives. Moreover, the complex qualities of hazards and disasters necessitate interdisciplinary approaches to inform theory development that encompasses environmental, human, and infrastructure systems at multiple scales and units of analysis. Unfortunately, truly integrative hazard and disaster theory at a scale broad en...
Health information technology could provide valuable support for inter-professional collaboration to address complex health issues, but current HIT systems do not adequately support such collaboration. Existing theoretical research on supporting collaborative work can help inform the design of collaborative HIT systems. Using the example of supporting collaboration between child development service providers, we describe a deductive approach that leverages concepts from the literature and analyzes qualitati...
Collaboration between general practitioners and community pharmacists is essential to ensure safe and effective patient care. However, collaboration in primary care is not standardized and varies greatly. This review aims to highlight projects about professional collaboration in ambulatory care in Germany and identifies promising approaches and successful benchmarks that should be considered for future projects.
The aim was to explore the process of involving mental healthcare service users in a mental health promotion research project as research advisors and to articulate features of the collaboration which encouraged and empowered the advisors to make significant contributions to the research process and outcome.
Collaboration among healthcare providers has been considered a promising strategy for improving care quality and patient outcomes. Despite mounting evidence demonstrating the impact of collaboration on outcomes of healthcare providers, there is little empirical evidence on the relationship between collaboration and patient safety outcomes, particularly at the patient care unit level.
This paper provides the first assessment of patterns of interprofessional collaboration in headspace centres - Australia's youth mental health service - to determine if agencies established to integrate care, deliver collaboration across professional boundaries. The staff of two headspace centres were surveyed to identify with whom they collaborated during routine work, and when faced with uncertain situations. Social network analysis was used to assess interprofessional collaboration within each center and...
To sustain the critical progress made, prioritization and a multidisciplinary approach to malaria research remain important to the national malaria control program in Benin. To document the structure of the malaria collaborative research in Benin, we analyze authorship of the scientific documents published on malaria from Benin.
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate how and with which mechanisms health care professionals in practice design for collaboration to solve collective hospital tasks, which cross occupational and departmental boundaries. Design/methodology/approach An in-depth multiple-case study of five departments across four hospitals facing fast to slow response task requirements was carried out using interviews and observations. The selected cases were revealing as the departments had designed and formali...
Entry-level nurses require health promotion, chronic disease self-management, care coordination, data utilization, and evidence translation competencies to address complex population health needs. An innovative PhD-DNP faculty collaboration implemented a descriptive survey design to evaluate simulation-based strategies using an unfolding chronically ill adult case to address population health. Results showed the PhD-DNP faculty team was effective in developing clinically meaningful learning experiences to a...
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of death in the first half of life and a chronic disability for Canadians of all ages. Despite the recognized importance of TBI, there is no integrated national strategy for research and best practices in Canada. We therefore created the Canadian TBI Research Consortium (CTRC) to build an ideal model of collaboration between Canadian TBI researchers. Our objectives were to: (1) Create a collaborative Canadian research network, (2) improve patient survival, f...
The Wellcome Trust Strategic Award in Medical Mycology and Fungal Immunology is a unique investment that aimed to bolster capacity, training and research activity throughout the UK. This article summarises the rationale for collective collaboration of multiple institutions to achieve synergies and address a common medical problem.
to compare the attitudes regarding interprofessional collaboration of health professionals that make up the Family Health Strategy teams participating in the 'More Doctors' (Mais Médicos) program; and to identify factors associated with attitudes of interprofessional collaboration.
The global aging of human population is one of the main challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. Establishing an International Agency for Research on Aging as an entity affiliated to one of the intergovernmental institutions, such as the World Health Organization, can be crucial for promoting international collaboration in gerontology, in particular in a search of effective and safe geroprotectors for humans.
