Effect of Repeated Freeze-Thaw on Serum Biomarkers Associated with Eye Disease.

BACKGROUND Serum biomarkers are associated with eye diseases, which results in the need for cryopreservation of serum samples. However, the effect on serum biomarker levels of repeatedly freezing and thawing remains poorly understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of repeated freeze-thaw on the serum levels of the protein, complement C3c (C3c), the micromolecule, uric acid (UA), and the enzyme, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). MATERIAL AND METHODS Serum samples were obtained from 50 ...

The benchmark dose estimation of reference levels of serum urate for gout.

Hyperuricemia is the main risk factor for gout. Although the threshold of hyperuricemia has been recommended, the reference levels of serum urate for gout have not been clarified. In the present study, we estimated the reference levels of serum urate for gout. A study has shown the association between serum urate and incidence of gout during 5-15 years of follow-up. We calculated the reference levels of serum urate for gout based on the previous published data by using the benchmark dose (BMD) method. The ...

Eighty cases of moderate to severe AR and 65 healthy adults were selected as the subjects. The level of 25 (OH) D was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and the serum 25 (OH) D level of eight common serum allergens in patients with moderate to severe AR was analyzed. The level...

Serum or plasma, what is the difference? Investigations to facilitate the sample material selection decision making process for metabolomics studies and beyond.

In analytical chemistry serum as well as plasma are recommended as sample material of choice. However, blood processing for the generation of serum or plasma is rather different. Whether plasma or serum is the preferable sample material is still controversial discussed. We performed in paired samples three UHPLC-mass spectrometry-driven metabolomics studies. In study 1 metabolite profiles of serum vs plasma were compared. 46% out of 216 identified metabolites showed significant different levels (paired Wilc...

The results of a systematic study showed that the efficacy of autologous serum eye drops remains ambiguous because its preparation methods and clinical application have not been standardized. To elucidate the efficacy of autologous serum eye drops, well-designed, large-...

Identification of three novel loci of ALDH2 Gene for Serum Folate levels in a Male Chinese Population by Genome-Wide Association Study.

Serum folate is important in clinical researches and DNA synthesis and methylation. Some loci and genes that are associated with folate levels had been detected by genome-wide association studies (GWAS), such as rs1801133 in MTHFR and rs1979277 in SHMT1. Nevertheless, only a small part of variants has been clearly identified for serum folate. Hence, we conducted a GWAS to discover new inherited susceptibility and gene-environment interactions on serum folate concentration.
