Oral adherence in adults with acute myeloid leukemia (AML): results of a mixed methods study.

The incidence of AML is increasing, in part due to an aging population. Since 2017, eight novel agents have been introduced, 6 of which are oral: midostaurin, enasidenib, ivosidenib, gilteritinib, glasdegib, and venetoclax. With an increase in oral medications (OMs), patients face associated side effects that accompany OMs, which often decreases adherence. We aimed to identify and summarize adherence to OMs in this population.

Oral Care Evaluation to Prevent Oral Mucositis in Estrogen Receptor-Positive Metastatic Breast Cancer Patients Treated with Everolimus (Oral Care-BC): A Randomized Controlled Phase III Trial.

The incidence of oral mucositis (any grade) after everolimus treatment is 58% in the general population and 81% in Asian patients. This study hypothesized that professional oral care (POC) before everolimus treatment could reduce the incidence of everolimus-induced oral mucositis.

Nimodipine Reappraised: An Old Drug With a Future.

Nimodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel antagonist that blocks the flux of extracellular calcium through L-type, voltage-gated calcium channels. While nimodipine is FDA-approved for the prevention and treatment of neurological deficits in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), it affects myriad cell types throughout the body, and thus, likely has more complex mechanisms of action than simple inhibition of cerebral vasoconstriction. Newer understanding of the pathophysiology of dela...

Enteral Acetaminophen Bioavailability in Pediatric Intensive Care Patients Determined With an Oral Microtracer and Pharmacokinetic Modeling to Optimize Dosing.

Decreasing morbidity and mortality by rationalizing drug treatment in the critically ill is of paramount importance but challenging as the underlying clinical condition may lead to large variation in drug disposition and response. New microtracer methodology is now available to gain knowledge on drug disposition in the intensive care. On the basis of studies in healthy adults, physicians tend to assume that oral doses of acetaminophen will be completely absorbed and therefore prescribe the same dose per kil...

Usage and Scientific Properties of the ADVOCATE Oral Health Care Measures.

Feedback information about the quality of oral health care is important for reflective learning by oral health care professionals and the wider health system. To this end, a list of 48 topics describing oral health and oral health care was recently agreed as part of the EU H2020 ADVOCATE project.

Development and pilot study of an oral health literacy tool for older adults.

Oral health literacy is emerging as an important element in oral health promotion, but few studies have been conducted in older adults. This work aimed to develop and validate the Test of Functional Health Literacy in Dentistry for Older Adults (OA-TOFHLiD).

A prospective study on oral adverse effects in head and neck cancer patients submitted to a preventive oral care protocol.

To evaluate the occurrence and severity of oral complications, number of radiotherapy (RT) interruptions and quality of life (QoL) in a population of head and neck cancer patients receiving a preventive oral care program (POCP) and photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT).

Association of eating alone with oral frailty among community-dwelling older adults in Japan.

Because the oral cavity plays an important role as the first digestive organ, thus, decreased oral function such as oral frailty may negatively affect the nutritional status of older adults. However, few studies have examined the relationship between oral frailty and dietary habits.

Moving towards independent living in Ghana: Narratives from young adults about their kinship care experience.

In most sub-Saharan African countries, studies on the impact of out-of-home care experience on the transition of young adults leaving care are limited to those leaving institutional or foster care with no empirical evidence on the experiences of those moving out of kinship care. This study reports findings from interviews with young adults with experience of kinship care in Ghana, about what lessons their kinship care experiences provided in their transition to adulthood.

Long-Term Patterns of Oral Anticancer Agent Adoption, Duration, and Switching in Patients With CML.

Oral tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have been the standard of care for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) since 2001. However, few studies have evaluated changes in the treatment landscape of CML over time. This study assessed the long-term treatment patterns of oral anticancer therapies among patients with CML.

The Prevention of Infections in Older Adults: Oral Health.

The oral cavity is exposed to the external environment and from a very young age is colonized by infectious agents. Under certain circumstances including poor oral hygiene, dry mouth, trauma, and the use of antibiotics, oral infections can occur. They can result in damage to the oral cavity including teeth and their support structures. Oral infections can also lead to the extension of infection into surrounding tissues and to systemic infections. Chronic oral infection is a recognized risk factor for heart ...

Development of an intervention tool for precision oral self-care: Personalized and evidence-based practice for patients with periodontal disease.

Oral self-care plays an important role in maintaining oral health and preventing the occurrence of oral diseases. The association between good oral care and good oral hygiene is well known. However, the adherence to a proper daily oral hygiene regimen generally remains poor, so the prevalence of oral diseases remains high. Periodontal disease is the most common oral disease in the population. To enhance the adherence to good oral hygiene behaviors for patients with periodontal disease, we developed a person...

Oral and dental health and health care for Māori with type 2 diabetes: A qualitative study.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and periodontal disease are two highly prevalent, directly and independently associated long-term conditions that disproportionately impact Indigenous Māori in New Zealand (NZ). Although poorly understood, a number of social and biological mechanisms connect these conditions. This qualitative study explored experiences of T2DM and oral and dental (hereafter oral/dental) health; access to oral/dental health care; whether participants' experiences supported or challenged exist...

Quality of life measures in older adults after traumatic brain injury: a systematic review.

On average older adults experiencing TBI are hospitalized four times as often, have longer hospital stays, and experience slower recovery trajectories and worse functional outcomes compared to younger populations with the same injury severity. A standard measure of Qol for older adults with TBI would facilitate accurate and reliable data across the individual patient care continuum and across clinical care settings, as well as support more rigorous research studies of metadata.

Suicidal Ideation of the Elderly According to Their Involvement in Grandchild Care.

Point of care and oral fluid Hepatitis B testing in remote Indigenous communities of northern Australia.

Many Indigenous Australians in northern Australia living with chronic Hepatitis B are unaware of their diagnosis due to low screening rates. A venous blood point of care test (POCT) or oral fluid laboratory test could improve testing uptake in this region. The purpose of this study was to assess the field performance of venous blood POCT and laboratory performance of an oral fluid Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) test in Indigenous individuals living in remote northern Australian communities. The study w...
