Bumetanide: A review of its neuroplasticity and behavioral effects after stroke.

Stroke often leads to neuronal injury and neurological functional deficits. Whilst spontaneous neurogenesis and axon regeneration are induced by ischemic stroke, effective pharmacological treatments are also essential for the improvement of neuroplasticity and functional recovery after stroke. However, no pharmacological therapy has been demonstrated to be able to effectively improve the functional recovery after stroke. Bumetanide is a specific Na +-K +-Cl- co-transporter inhibitor which can maintain chl...

Andrographolide sensitizes Hep-2 human laryngeal cancer cells to carboplatin-induced apoptosis by increasing reactive oxygen species levels.

Andrographolide is a natural diterpenoid from Andrographis paniculata that has been proposed as an anticancer agent as well as a chemosensitizer for use in combination with anticancer drugs. Carboplatin is the first-line chemotherapeutic agent for advanced laryngeal carcinoma. However, the clinical efficacy of carboplatin is limited by drug resistance and side effects. The aim of this study was to investigate whether andrographolide has a synergistic antitumor effect with carboplatin on human laryngeal canc...

Quality and Safety in Healthcare, Part LV: Leadership to prevent burnout and increase joy.

Leadership is very important to reduce burnout and promote happiness in the healthcare workplace. Whereas burnout and unhappiness lead to doctor turnover, more errors, more accidents, and decreased patient satisfaction, joy in the workplace results in better patient care, enhanced engagement and productivity, and more profitability for the healthcare organization. Many leadership characteristics are critical including integrity, putting the well-being of others first, being fair, standing for important prin...

The aim of the study was to investigate initial and early fixation of pedicle screws with a plasma-sprayed titanium coating and dual pitch in the pedicle region (dual pitch titanium-coated pedicle screw [DPTCPS]) in a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) rod semi-rigid fixation system.

Pharmacologic Management of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Using a Protocol.

The opioid epidemic in the United States has reached unprecedented proportions with far-reaching impacts on the most vulnerable population. The number of neonates born addicted to opioids has grown exponentially over the last several decades, leading to increased neonatal intensive care unit admissions and rising healthcare costs. Recent studies have yielded mixed results regarding which medication is most effective at relieving the symptoms of opioid withdrawal and reducing the weaning timeframe for babies...

Surgical and Oncological Outcomes of Laparoscopic Versus Open Pancreaticoduodenectomy in Patients With Pancreatic Duct Adenocarcinoma.

It is not clear which of the 2 principal treatments for patients with pancreatic duct adenocarcinoma (PDAC), laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) and open pancreaticoduodenectomy (OPD), has greater safety and efficacy. We performed the present meta-analysis to assess the efficacy of both treatments for PDAC patients undergoing LPD. Multiple electronic databases were systematically searched to identify studies (up to October 2018) comparing LPD with OPD for PDAC. Short- and long-term oncological outcom...

BORDERLINE-POSITIVE QUANTIFERON IN CHILDREN.

We systematically retested children with borderline-positive quantiferon (0.35-0.99 IU/mL) during the period 2015-2019. Among 647 tests, 27 (4%) were positive (>0.35 IU/mL). Borderline-positive quantiferon accounted for 10 of 27 (37%) positive tests. When retested, 9 of 10 (90%) were negative. Children younger than 5 years had negative tuberculin skin tests. Thus, we found high test variability in the borderline range and, in some children, high suspicion of false positive tests.

Correlation of Inhaled Long-acting Bronchodilators with Adverse Cardiovascular Outcomes in Patients with Stable COPD: A Bayesian Network Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

A majority of existing studies have focused on the efficacy of inhaled long-acting bronchodilators (ILABs), such as long-acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMAs) and long-acting β2-agonists (LABAs), and LABAs combined with LAMAs in treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The current meta-analysis aimed to investigate the correlation of ILABs with specific cardiovascular adverse events (CAEs). Five electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Scopus and Web of Science, were ...

Nebivolol improves obesity-induced vascular remodelling by suppressing NLRP3 activation.

Nebivolol is a novel β-adrenergic receptor (β-AR) blocker with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The NLRP3 inflammasome plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of obesity-induced vascular dysfunction. Our study aimed to explore the effect of nebivolol on the NLRP3 inflammasome and vascular remodelling in diet-induced obese rats. Eight-week-old Sprague-Dawley male rats were fed with either a standard chow diet (ND) or a high-fat diet (HFD) for 8 weeks. Next, the obese rats were subdivided into...

Comparison Effects of Platelet-Rich Fibrin on Macrofat and Shuffling Fat Grafting.

Fat acquisition, processing, and grafting techniques are considered to be the main factors affecting the volume retention rate of fat grafting. Shuffling fat (SF) is obtained by refining macrofat (MF), both of which have been applied in autologous fat grafting. However, few studies have focused on comparison effects of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) on MF and SF grafting. Grafts were prepared by mixing MF and SF with PRF or normal saline at a ratio of 5:1, and grafted into symmetric recipient sites of a mouse's...
