The Banner of Hope and Solidarity After Mass Murder.

On November 5, 2017, Brooke Army Medical Center emergency department (ED) was faced with the unthinkable: the deadliest mass shooting in Texas history, where 26 souls lost their lives attending church services in Sutherland Springs. That Sunday morning our trauma center received eight gunshot wound victims, 2 of whom were minors. Without warning, our residents faced a situation that they had only read about in textbooks. The residents led the trauma resuscitations that day and did so brilliantly. This artic...

Unexpected fungal communities in the Rehai thermal springs of Tengchong influenced by abiotic factors.

Fungal communities represent an indispensable part of the geothermal spring ecosystem; however, studies on fungal community within hot springs are still scant. Here, we used Illumina HiSeq 2500 sequencing to detect fungal community diversity in extremely acidic hot springs (pH  6) of Tengchong-indicated by the presence of over 0.75 million valid reads. These sequences were phylogenetically assigned to 5 fungal phyla, 67 order, and 375 genera, indicating unexpected fungal diversity in the hot springs. The ...

African American Church Engagement in the HIV Care Continuum.

Providing comprehensive services across the HIV care continuum through African American churches may improve HIV treatment outcomes for African Americans. We explored the feasibility of a church-led HIV care program in six churches in Baltimore, Maryland. Church leaders (n = 57) participated in focus groups and eight pastors participated in interviews. Data were analyzed by qualitative hybrid thematic analysis. Findings revealed eight themes: four themes were related to linkage to care: being unaware of c...

Improvements of Shooting Performance in Adolescent Air Rifle Athletes After a 6-week Balance and Respiration Training Programs.

Several factors, such as balance and respiration training programs, have been identified as contributing to the establishment of a shooting performance. However, little is known about the benefits of these programs on the shooting record, among adolescent air rifle athletes.

Detection of painted-over traces of blood and seminal fluid.

Dealing with a refurbished crime scene is a special challenge for forensic investigators. In such cases, a crime scene may not have only been cleaned in order to erase all traces but the walls of an indoor crime scene could also be painted over in order to mask traces of the crime. So far, very few publications have shown that painted-over traces of blood and seminal fluid can be detected using a forensic light source or infrared photography. To date, there have been no systematically executed research stud...

Lead bioaccumulation in Texas Harvester Ants (Pogonomyrmex barbatus) and toxicological implications for Texas Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum) populations of Bexar County, Texas.

Uptake of lead from soil was examined in order to establish a site-specific ecological protective concentration level for the Texas Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum) at the Former Humble Refinery in San Antonio, Texas. Soils, harvester ants, and rinse water from the ants were analyzed at 11 Texas Harvester Ant (Pogonomyrmex barbatus) mounds. Soil concentrations at the harvester ant mounds ranged from 13 to 7474 mg/kg of lead dry weight. Ant tissue sample concentrations ranged from

Hematology of Free-ranging and Managed Texas Horned Lizards ( Phrynosoma cornutum).

The Texas horned lizard ( Phrynosoma cornutum) is a threatened species in Texas (federal category C2). Causes for population declines in this species are likely multiple. Disease and health assessments using traditional methods, including hematology, have been minimally studied in Phrynosoma spp. Apparently healthy, free-ranging Texas horned lizard from four locations in Texas ( n=53) and captive Texas horned lizards maintained at the Fort Worth Zoo ( n=16) were sampled to establish hematologic reference in...

Effect of Prolonged Military Field Training on Neuromuscular and Hormonal Responses and Shooting Performance in Warfighters.

Previous studies have shown that military field training (MFT) has effects on warfighters' hormonal responses, neuromuscular performance, and shooting accuracy. The aim of the present study was to investigate the changes in body composition, upper and lower body strength, serum hormone concentrations of testosterone (TES) and cortisol (COR), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and shooting accuracy during prolonged MFT.

Case Reports of Fatalities Involving Tianeptine in the United States.

Tianeptine is a tricyclic anti-depressant that is also known to have opioid receptor activity. We present two fatal cases of tianeptine intoxication in Texas in which tianeptine was used recreationally. The first case involved a 28-year-old white male found alone on the floor of his locked residence. He had a history of drug abuse but no other toxicological findings. The second case involved a 30-year-old white male found on the floor of the bathroom in his home. Drug paraphernalia and bags labeled as tiane...

Implication of Nilgai Antelope (Artiodactyla: Bovidae) in Reinfestations of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Acari: Ixodidae) in South Texas: A Review and Update.

The Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program was the first parasite eradication program of veterinary importance in the United States and is considered to be one of the greatest disease eradication programs of all time. The program's utilization of pasture vacation and dipping of cattle in acaricide has been extremely successful for controlling Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini) and R. (B.) annulatus (Say), collectively known as cattle fever ticks, on cattle along the Texas border with Mexico for...

Improved atmospheric effect elimination method for the roughness estimation of painted surfaces.

We propose a method for eliminating the atmospheric effect in polarimetric imaging remote sensing by using polarimetric imagers to simultaneously detect ground targets and skylight, which does not need calibrated targets. In addition, calculation efficiencies are improved by the skylight division method without losing estimation accuracy. Outdoor experiments are performed to obtain the polarimetric bidirectional reflectance distribution functions of painted surfaces and skylight under different weather cond...

AIDS, Sexual Health, and the Catholic Church in 1980s Ireland: A Public Health Paradox?

Our aim was to explore the paradoxical role of the Catholic Church during the early AIDS era in establishing a policy network committed to the principles of public health, even in instances in which these principles contradicted Catholic moral teaching. This article is rooted in a study that explored the transformational effects of AIDS on Irish sexual health policy during the initial decade of the epidemic; that is, as it unfolded in Ireland between 1982 and 1992. Our source material, consisting of 20 docu...

HIV Testing, Stigma, and Risk: A Comparison of Church Leaders and Their Congregants.

The involvement of African American churches in HIV testing and prevention is a viable community-based strategy in efforts to reduce rates of HIV among African Americans; however, church members' beliefs and attitudes are often barriers to successful implementation. This study aimed to compare church leaders and congregants regarding HIV testing behaviors, HIV-related stigma, HIV knowledge, and perceived risk. This comparative, cross-sectional study used self-reporting questionnaires across six churches in ...

Changes in social support over time in a faith-based physical activity intervention.

African-American women report higher levels of chronic conditions and church attendance relative to the overall US population. Therefore, efforts have increased over the past decade to design church-based health promotion programs. The present study compared changes in religiosity, religious social support and general social support across time within a church-based physical activity study. In a clustered randomized controlled trial, 31 churches and ∼15 African-American women per church were recruited to ...

Firearm storage and shooting experience: Factors relevant to the practical capability for suicide.

The capability for suicide is posited to facilitate the relatively rare transition from suicidal ideation to suicidal behavior, although the operational definition of the construct continues to evolve. The Three Step Theory proposes that capability is multifaceted and includes practical capability for suicide, defined as comfort with and access to lethal means. Empirical examinations of this construct are thus far limited. Two previous studies have examined the association between firearm storage and shooti...

A mixed composition particle highlights the formation mechanism of the weapon memory effect phenomenon.

A shooting event involved several types of ammunition that were all shot from a single firearm. GSR analysis of samples taken from the suspect's hands, hair and from his clothes was carried out. Mixed compositions particles were found among other GSR particles, attributed to the weapon memory effect. SEM/EDX analysis of these particles highlighted a particle with defined domains containing distinct groups of elements. Some of these elements were absent in the primers mixtures of the ammunition used in the s...

Use of Complementary Health Practices in a Church-Based African American Cohort.

Few studies have examined the use of complementary health practices (e.g., mind/body practices and dietary supplements) among African Americans, particularly those who identify as being spiritual and/or religious. Furthermore, research on the health and health behavior profiles of such complementary health users is scant. The purpose of this study was to explore the use of complementary health practices and their lifestyle and health indicator correlates in a large, church-based African American population.
