Tooth wear in Swedish adults - a cross-sectional study.

Tooth wear, has been recognized as a growing oral health problem in children and adolescents, with erosion often cited as the main cause of the tooth wear. Most studies on tooth wear have been conducted on children and adolescents, and only few studies focus on adults. Our aim was to study the prevalence of different types of tooth wear in an adult population and investigate related factors to tooth wear.

In vitro wear of a zirconium-reinforced lithium silicate ceramic against different restorative materials.

It is important to predict the wear behavior of a material as well as its potential to wear antagonized restorative materials. Thus, this study investigated the performance of zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) after wear with different antagonists. Thirty discs of ZLS were made and divided into three groups according to the antagonist (n = 10). Ten cylinders of each antagonist were also made. The parameters for the simulation of wear were: 30N, horizontal movement of 6 mm, and 1.7 Hz, total...

Can Differences in Early Hearing Development Be Distinguished by the LittlEARs Auditory Questionnaire?

This study asks whether the LittlEARs Auditory Questionnaire (LEAQ), a caregiver measure, can differentiate between the early auditory development of children with bilateral cochlear implants (CIs), bilateral hearing aids (HAs), and children with Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder (ANSD) who wear CIs or HAs. The LEAQ is sensitive to impaired auditory development but has not previously been used to distinguish developmental changes between groups of children using different hearing technologies or with di...

Backside wear, particle migration and effectiveness of screw hole plugs in acetabular hip joint replacement with cross-linked polyethylene.

In total hip arthroplasty, osteolysis of the acetabulum often occurs at the backside of cups in the area of screw holes, indicating a clinically relevant amount of polyethylene (PE) wear particles in this area. In order to avoid a possible migration of wear particles to the acetabulum-bone, screw hole plugs are provided for some implant systems. The aims of this study were to quantitatively determine backside wear and to investigate the migration behaviour of articulation-related wear particles in a cup sys...

Retrieval analysis of TiN (titanium nitride) coated knee replacements: Coating wear and degradation in vivo.

Titanium nitride (TiN) coatings are used in joint arthroplasty to minimize wear and reduce the allergenic potential of metal implants, yet little is known about their performance in knee arthroplasty. This retrieval study examined TiN coated knee replacements to verify in vivo wear and degradation of the coating.

Bioinspired Adhesion Polymers - Wear Resistance of Adsorption Layers.

Mussel adhesive polymers owe their ability to strongly bind to a large variety of surfaces under water due to their high content of 3,4-dihydroxy-l-phenylalanine (DOPA) groups and high positive charge. In this work we use a set of statistical copolymers that contain medium length poly(ethylene oxide) side chains that are anchored to the surface in three different ways: by means of i) electrostatic forces, ii) catechol groups (as in DOPA), and iii) the combination of electrostatic forces and catechol groups....

Terminology of Erosive Tooth Wear: Consensus Report of a Workshop Organized by the ORCA and the Cariology Research Group of the IADR.

Our understanding of erosive tooth wear and its contributing factors has evolved considerably over the last decades. New terms have been continuously introduced, which frequently describe the same aspects of this condition, whereas other terms are being used inappropriately. This has led to unnecessary confusion and miscommunication between patients, professionals, and researchers. A group of 15 experts, selected by the European Organization for Caries Research (ORCA) and the Cariology Research Group of the...

Audibility-Based Hearing Aid Fitting Criteria for Children With Mild Bilateral Hearing Loss.

Purpose Because of uncertainty about the level of hearing where hearing aids should be provided to children, the goal of the current study was to develop audibility-based hearing aid candidacy criteria based on the relationship between unaided hearing and language outcomes in a group of children with hearing loss who did not wear hearing aids. Method Unaided hearing and language outcomes were examined for 52 children with mild-to-severe hearing losses. A group of 52 children with typical hearing matched for...

Slippery and Wear Resistant Surfaces Enabled by Interface Engineered Graphene.

Friction and wear remain the primary cause of mechanical energy dissipation and system failure. Recent studies reveal graphene as a powerful solid lubricant to combat friction and wear. Most of these studies have focussed on nanoscale tribology and have been limited to a few specific surfaces. Here, we uncover many unknown aspects of graphene's contact-sliding at micro- and macroscopic tribo-scales over a broader range of surfaces. We discover that graphene's performance reduces for surfaces with increasing...

Protective Effect of Fluoride Varnish Containing Trimetaphosphate against Dentin Erosion and Erosion/Abrasion: An in vitro Study.

This in vitro study evaluated the protective effect of fluoride varnishes containing sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP) against dentin erosion and abrasion. Specimens of coronal dentin were divided into: placebo, 2.5% NaF, 5% NaF, 2.5% NaF + 5% TMP, and 5% NaF + 5% TMP groups (n =24/group). After single application of the varnishes, the samples were immersed in citric acid (0.05 mol/L, pH = 3.2, 5 min) followed or not by brushing, and the dentin wear was assessed after 5 days. Varnishes containing fluoride + TMP...

Solochrome cyanine: A histological stain for cobalt-chromium wear particles in metal-on-metal periprosthetic tissues.

Metal-on-metal (MoM) hip arthroplasties produce abundant implant-derived wear debris composed mainly of cobalt (Co) and chromium (Cr). Cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) wear particles are difficult to identify histologically and need to be distinguished from other wear particle types and endogenous components (e.g., haemosiderin, fibrin) which may be present in MoM periprosthetic tissues. In this study we sought to determine whether histological stains that have an affinity for metals are useful in identifying Co-Cr ...

Age-related tooth wear in African rainforest hunter-gatherers.

Central African small-scale foragers subsist primarily on hunting game activities and wild plant-food gathering. Starch-rich tubers are underground storage organs (USOs) and staple food resources in savanna and tropical rainforests. However, little is known about the effect of USO consumption on tooth wear development in living hunter-gatherers. We report age- and sex-dependent tooth wear rates in forest-dwelling Baka Pygmies with well-documented wild-yam-tuber-based diet to explore the long-term impact of ...

Carbon-fibre-reinforced PEEK: An alternative material for flexion bushings of rotating hinged knee joints?

For prosthetic knee joints of the hinged type, typically polyethylene (PE) flexion bushings are used between axis and femoral component to prevent metallic wear. Nevertheless, PE-wear can lead to periprosthetic osteolysis followed by aseptic loosening of the implant. Based on high creep and wear resistance carbon-fibre-reinforced polyether ether ketones (CFR-PEEKs) could provide an alternative material to ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) for this bearing type.
