Hurricane storm surge in Volusia County, Florida: evidence of a tipping point for infrastructure damage.

Storm surge often is the most destructive consequence of hurricanes and tropical storms, causing significant economic damage and loss of life. Many coastal communities that are located in high-risk areas vis-à-vis hurricanes and tropical storms are prepared for moderate (between six and eight feet) storm surges. Such preparation, though, is not commensurate with more severe, but less frequent, storm surges (greater than eight feet). These gaps in preparedness have serious implications for community resilie...

Neuroestradiol in regulation of GnRH release.

The concept that the positive feedback effect of ovarian estradiol (E) results in GnRH and gonadotropin surges is a well-established principle. However, a series of studies investigating the rapid action of Ein female rhesus monkeys has led to a new concept that neuroestradiol, synthesized and released in the hypothalamus, also contributes to regulation of the preovulatory GnRH surge. This unexpected finding started from our surprising observation that Einduces rapid stimulatory action in GnRH neurons in vi...

Storm surge variation along the coast of the Bohai Sea.

The present study mainly investigates the storm surge variations at different temporal scales using hourly tide gauge data in the Bohai Sea. The seasonal variation, inter-decadal variation, long-term trend and the tide-surge interaction were analyzed separately. The results show that the storm surges in the southwest Bohai Sea are larger than those in the north. The storm surges were more serious in winter (Oct. to Mar.) than in summer half of the year. Significant inter-decadal variations exist in the Boha...

Effective concentration of levobupivacaine and ropivacaine in 80% of patients receiving epidural analgesia (EC80) in the first stage of labour: a study using the Continual Reassessment Method.

A comparison of the effective dose in 50% of patients (ED50) has suggested that the potency of levobupivacaine lies between that of bupivacaine and ropivacaine. However, for clinical purposes, knowledge and use of doses close to the ED95 are more relevant. This study was designed to determine the EC80 (effective concentration) for both epidural levobupivacaine and ropivacaine using the continual reassessment method (CRM) during obstetric analgesia.

Universal versus conditional day 3 follow-up for children with non-severe unclassified fever at the community level in Ethiopia: A cluster-randomised non-inferiority trial.

With declining malaria prevalence and improved use of malaria diagnostic tests, an increasing proportion of children seen by community health workers (CHWs) have unclassified fever. Current community management guidelines by WHO advise that children seen with non-severe unclassified fever (on day 1) should return to CHWs on day 3 for reassessment. We compared the safety of conditional follow-up reassessment only in cases where symptoms do not resolve with universal follow-up on day 3.

Examining racial/ethnic differences in patterns of benzodiazepine prescription and misuse.

Benzodiazepines (BZDs) are widely prescribed during psychiatric treatment. Unfortunately, their misuse has led to recent surges in overdose emergency visits and drug-related deaths.

Post mortem vitreous magnesium in adult population.

The study of post mortem vitreous magnesium (Mg) is less common than sodium (Na), chloride (Cl) and potassium (K) in the forensic literature. There is no accepted normal range for post mortem vitreous Mg and the relationship between post mortem vitreous Mg levels and post mortem interval (PMI), other electrolyte levels, disease conditions, age and sex have not been fully established.

Prevalence of post-micturition incontinence before and after anterior urethroplasty.

This study aims to define the prevalence of pre- and post-operative post-micturition incontinence, or post-void dribbling, after anterior urethroplasty for urethral stricture disease and to determine risk factors for its presence.

Post-operative outcomes in older patients: a single-centre observational study.

Improved life-expectancies have seen increased rates of older patients undergoing surgery worldwide. These patients are at increased risk of post-operative complications. Australian evidence is limited regarding the association between age and post-operative outcomes, especially rapid response calls (RRCs) as indicators of adverse outcomes. The aim was to compare the post-operative outcomes of older patients (≥80 years) to younger patients. Specifically, 30-day in-hospital mortality; unplanned intensive...

Clinical Appraisal of the WAM'X Super Quick Post-and-Core Removal Device.

This report describes an innovative technique to remove post-and-core restorations. The WAM'X Super Quick post removal device permits a secure mechanical traction technique that can adapt to variable root angulations. Pivoting prongs mounted on forceps allow post removal while preserving the ferrule effect to improve resistance to fractures.

Non-PTLD Malignancy post HSCT in patients with Primary Immunodeficiency: UK experience.

Secondary malignancy post haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for malignant disorders is well recognized. There are very few published reports on malignancy post HSCT for Primary Immunodeficiency (PID). We report 12 cases of 944 patients, who developed non-PTLD malignancy post-HSCT for PID.

Design of an early intervention for persistent post-concussion symptoms in adolescents and young adults: A feasibility study.

About 5- 15 % of patients with concussion experience persistent post-concussion symptoms (PCS) longer than 3 months post-injury.

Association of early pregnancy body mass index with post-partum weight change among African-American women.

Post-partum weight retention is relatively common and increases the risk for future obesity. Women who are overweight or obese prior to pregnancy, or who gain excessively during pregnancy, are more likely to retain weight post-partum. Much of the existing research is limited by a single post-partum body-weight measure and therefore cannot distinguish post-partum weight retention from post-partum weight accrual. This study tested the hypothesis that early pregnancy body mass index (BMI) is positively associa...

Polarity and molecular weight of compost-derived humic acid affect Fe(III) oxides reduction.

Whether polarity and molecular weight (MW) of compost-derived organic matters have significant impacts on their redox properties are far unknown. Our results showed that both the FeO and FeO reduction by S. oneidensis MR-1 were effectively facilitated by compost-derived humic acids (HAs) under anoxic condition. Among the 15 kinds of compost-derived components identified by the reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) and high-performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC), the rela...

Post-operative delayed elevation of ALT correlates with early death in patients with HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma and Post-hepatectomy Liver Failure.

Post-hepatectomy Liver Failure (PHLF) remains the primary cause of perioperative death. The kinetics of transaminase levels are usually measured as markers of hepatocellular injury following partial hepatectomy, but their correlation with PHLF and post-operative mortality is unclear. The aim of study was to compare the post-operative transaminase kinetics with short term survival in those patients that developed PHLF.

Measuring a new facet of post traumatic growth: Development of a scale of physical post traumatic growth in men with prostate cancer.

Risk of post-operative venous thromboembolism in patients with meningioma.

The surgical resection of meningiomas can be complicated by venous thromboembolism (VTE) in the post-operative period, but the exact incidence of this event is not known. Aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of VTE in patients operated for meningioma who underwent a post-operative clinical and objective screening for VTE. Patients undergoing meningioma resection between 2000 and 2010 who accepted to be investigated for VTE in the post-operative period were included in the study. The screening incl...

Post-Operative Infections among Patients Undergoing Radical Cystectomy at a Tertiary Center.

Post-operative infection after radical cystectomy is a common complication. It is essential to identify modifiable risk factors that can predict post-operative infection to reduce the incidence of infection after radical cystectomy. We investigated the incidence of post-operative infection, associated pathogens, and risk factors for post-operative infection after radical cystectomy.

Evaluation of Loss Due to Storm Surge Disasters in China Based on Econometric Model Groups.

Storm surge has become an important factor restricting the economic and social development of China's coastal regions. In order to improve the scientific judgment of future storm surge damage, a method of model groups is proposed to refine the evaluation of the loss due to storm surges. Due to the relative dispersion and poor regularity of the natural property data (login center air pressure, maximum wind speed, maximum storm water, super warning water level, etc.), storm surge disaster is divided based on ...
