Cutaneous leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV) is type of small vessel vasculitis that commonly presents as palpable purpura involving the lower extremities and buttocks. Approximately half of cases are idiopathic, but the disease may be triggered by infection, drug reaction, inflammatory disease, or other causes. We report a case of leukocytoclastic vasculitis secondary to the novel anticoagulant rivaroxaban (Xarelto®).
Tubercular vasculitis is an important manifestation of ocular tuberculosis and this report highlights the mimicking nature of the disease with frosted branch angiitis.
Current clinical evidence of tocilizumab for the treatment of ANCA-associated vasculitis: a prospective case series for microscopic polyangiitis in a combination with corticosteroids and literature review.
The purpose of this study is to report the efficacy and safety of a combination of tocilizumab (TCZ) and high-dose corticosteroid (CS) in two patients with microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) and review the published current clinical evidence on TCZ in patients with anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV), except for large vessel vasculitis (LVV) and polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). Two MPA patients were treated with TCZ at 8 mg/kg every month for 1 year and CS (prednisolone 1 mg/kg/day ...
IgA vasculitis (Henoch-Schonlein purpura) is a small vessel systemic vasculitis involving IgA immunoglobulin polyclonal activation(1) . Monoclonal gammopathy of cutaneous significance is a subgroup of monoclonal gammopathy with skin disease, without myeloma or lymphoproliferative disorder(2) . We report 3 patients with vasculitis and IgA monoclonal gammopathy of cutaneous significance. Three men, 38, 37 and 50 years old, had a vascular purpura for more than 10 years with partial remission and frequent necro...
Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) is characterized by necrotizing vasculitis of small-sized vessels with extravascular granulomas and eosinophilic infiltration. The case of a 48-year-old Japanese woman with EGPA, who presented concurrently with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and coronary vasculitis, is reported. She initially presented with bronchial asthma, and then 8 months later she developed various symptoms caused by systemic eosinophilic vasculitis and was admitted to our hospital. ...
Among the challenges in conducting clinical trials in large-vessel vasculitis (LVV), including both giant cell arteritis (GCA) and Takayasu arteritis (TA), is the lack of standardized and meaningful outcome measures. The Outcome Measures in Rheumatology (OMERACT) Vasculitis Working Group initiated an international effort to develop and validate data-driven outcome tools for clinical investigation in LVV.
To examine how often retail prices for prescription drugs are available on state public reporting websites, the variability of these reported prices, and zip code characteristics associated with greater price variation.
Work disability associated with rheumatic diseases accounts for a substantial financial burden. However, few studies have investigated disability among patients with vasculitis. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of vasculitis on patient employment and income.
Idiopathic retinal vasculitis, aneurysms, and neuroretinitis syndrome is a very rare primary retinal vasculitis. It seems to evolve in stages, where there is initially a florid vasculitis associated with aneurysm formation. Neuroretinitis and macula edema are common features. Subsequently, retinal ischemia ensues, leading to neovascularization. If untreated, further sight-threatening complications occur, including traction retinal detachment and secondary glaucoma.
The rising prices of specialty drugs have prompted a debate about how medications are priced. With the average price of cancer drugs doubling in the last decade, the unsustainability of drug prices is especially concerning in oncology and hematology. The objective of this study was to compare the prices of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) approved in the last 20 years by the FDA across disease states.
Few studies have examined associations of geographically proximal cigarette prices with within-person changes in smoking outcomes, or assessed interactions between cigarette prices and smoking bans.
Henoch-Schönlein Purpura (HSP; IgA vasculitis), the most common vasculitis of childhood, has a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations ranging from palpable purpura with abdominal pain and arthritis to the more morbid renal involvement.
Australia has a reputation as an anomaly with regard to cryptomarket drug trading, with seemingly disproportionately high levels of activity given its relatively small size, high prices and anecdotal accounts of it being a destination where many foreign-based vendors will not sell. This paper aims to investigate these claims from a risk and prices perspective.
The Illumina Infinium HumanMethylationEPIC BeadChip is the new platform for high-throughput DNA methylation analysis, effectively doubling the coverage compared to the older 450K array. Here we present a significantly updated and improved version of the Bioconductor package ChAMP, which can be used to analyze EPIC and 450k data. Many enhanced functionalities have been added, including correction for cell-type heterogeneity, network analysis, and a series of interactive graphical user interfaces.
Immunoglobulin-A vasculitis (IgAV) is classically a childhood small-sized blood vessel vasculitis with predominant involvement of the skin. Gastrointestinal and joint manifestations are common in patients diagnosed with this condition. Nephritis, which is more severe in adults, constitutes the most feared complication of this vasculitis. The molecular bases underlying the origin of IgAV have not been completely elucidated. Nevertheless, several pieces of evidence support the claim that genes play a crucial ...
Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a rare vasculitis affecting medium-sized vessels. Cutaneous PAN is a clinical variant, and we report the first case of empagliflozin-induced cutaneous PAN in a 69-year-old man. After starting empagliflozin, the patient presented with tender subcutaneous nodules on his legs, which showed a medium-sized vessel vasculitis on histopathology. Upon cessation of this medication, he had full resolution of these nodules. This case illustrates that empagliflozin can induce cutaneous PAN,...
Kidney biopsy is a gold standard for diagnosis of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV), but it is unknown whether vasculitis can be detected from AAV patients with minor urinary abnormalities.
Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) can be found at the sites of vascular lesions and in the circulation of patients with active small vessel vasculitis. Neutrophils from vasculitis patients release more NETs in vitro, and NETs have properties that can harm the vasculature both directly and indirectly. There are several ways to interfere with NET formation, which open for new therapeutic options. However, there are several types of NETs and different mechanisms of NET formation, and these might have diffe...
We investigated whether red blood cell distribution width (RDW) predicts vasculitis activity based on Birmingham vasculitis activity score (BVAS) or BVAS for granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) at diagnosis and poor prognosis during follow-up in patients with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV).
Influenza vaccinations are commonly administered and effectively prevent influenza. Most vaccine reactions are mild and self-limiting with few reported cases of vasculitis. We present a case of vasculitis post-vaccination unique for its dramatic visual presentation and rapid response to treatment with the aim to emphasise possible causation and timely treatment.
Idiopathic retinal vasculitis, aneurysms, and neuroretinitis (IRVAN) is a rare syndrome affecting the retinal and optic disc vasculature. Diffuse retinal ischemia, macular edema, and neovascularization may lead to bilateral vision loss. The authors report a case of a 36-year-old woman presenting with branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) in her right eye who was subsequently diagnosed with IRVAN syndrome. She was treated with panretinal photocoagulation for peripheral retinal ischemia and pars plana vitrec...
Recently, a study providing insight intomutational spectrum was published (Møller et al 2017). The authors report considerable pleiotropy even for single mutations and were not able to identify any genotype-phenotype correlations.
