Coxsackievirus A24 Variant Associated with Acute Haemorrhagic Conjunctivitis Cases, French Guiana, 2017.

In 2017, numerous cases of acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) were reported in the Caribbean and in South America. Preliminary reports identified adenoviruses and enteroviruses in some patient samples but, until now, none of the etiologic agents have been fully characterized. We report the full-length genomic sequences of 4 coxsackievirus A24 (CV-A24) isolates collected from AHC patients in French Guiana during this outbreak (May and June 2017). These isolates are very closely related and belong to the...

EKC is a contagious, severe form of viral conjunctivitis that can cause pain and blurred vision for up to 4 weeks (1). LAC DPH conducted an investigation, which identified 17 patients with EKC, including 15 who had visited the optometry clinic and two who were household contacts ...

Current Breakthroughs in Structure-Based Design of Synthetic and Natural Sourced Inhibitors against Zika Viral Targets.

Zika is a worldwide pandemic dreadful viral transmission through Aedes mosquito vector. It significantly causes fever, joint pain or rash, and conjunctivitis. Pregnant mothers suffering from Zika viral infection may have fetal abnormalities due to severe neurological problems, characterized by microcephaly along with Guillain-Barré syndrome, issuing ZIKV a major public health concern as declared by the World Health Organization. There is hardly any FDA approved anti-Zika viral drugs available.

Viral load testing and the use of test results for clinical decision making for HIV treatment in Cameroon: An insight into the clinic-laboratory interface.

The viral load (VL) in patients receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) is the best predictor of treatment outcome. The anticipated benefits of VL monitoring depend on the actual uptake of VL test results for clinical decisions. The objective of this study was to assess the uptake and utilization of VL test results for clinical decisions on HIV treatment in Cameroon, from 2013 to 2017.

Skin reactivity in allergic conjunctivitis.

Allergic conjunctivitis is caused by an IgE-mediated mechanism or immediate hypersensitivity due to allergen direct contact on the conjunctival surface of sensitized patients, which elicits mastocyte activation and inflammatory mediators' release. Up to 47% of patients with allergic conjunctivitis can develop sensitization to perennial allergens; more than 24% of patients can experience sensitization to multiple allergens.

The impact of currently licensed therapies on viral and immune responses in Chronic Hepatitis B: considerations for future novel therapeutics.

Despite the availability of a preventative vaccine, chronic hepatitis B (CHB) remains a global healthcare challenge with the risk of disease progression due to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Although current treatment strategies, Interferon and nucleos(t)ide analogues have contributed to reducing morbidity and mortality related to CHB, these therapies are limited in providing functional cure. The treatment paradigm in CHB is rapidly evolving with a number of new agents in the developmental pipeline...

Antibodies to Conserved Surface Polysaccharides Protect Mice Against Bacterial Conjunctivitis.

Bacterial conjunctivitis is a major problem in ocular health. Little is known about protective immune effectors in the conjunctiva. We evaluated whether opsonic antibody to the conserved surface/capsular polysaccharide poly-N-acetyl glucosamine (PNAG) expressed by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus was protective against bacterial conjunctivitis, as well as an antibody to the Pseudomonas aeruginosa surface polysaccharide alginate.

Diagnosis of a case of ligneous gingivitis in a patient with moderate plasminogen deficiency.

Plasminogen deficiency is a rare congenital condition that leads to pseudomembraneous lesions, such as ligneous conjunctivitis and ligneous gingivitis. Because of its rarity, ligneous gingivitis is not a pathology one may easily suspect from its clinical symptoms. We report the case of a 35-year-old Caucasian woman who experienced gum masses with white spots, but no pain. Based on the clinical picture, one could refute a diagnosis of necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis. Several biopsies were taken. The las...

Fresh frozen plasma (Octaplas) and topical heparin in the management of ligneous conjunctivitis.

Ligneous conjunctivitis is a rare form of chronic recurrent membranous conjunctivitis with reduced plasminogen activity. It is characterized by the formation of characteristic firm ("woody") membranes on the tarsal conjunctiva. Similar lesions may occur on other mucous membranes. When treated with local excision, ligneous conjunctivitis is invariably associated with recurrences. Various therapeutic modalities, including topical heparin, cyclosporine, fresh frozen plasma (FFP), plasminogen, and amniotic memb...

CIRCpe{Piwecka, 2017 #307}dia v2: An Updated Database for Comprehensive Circular RNA Annotation and Expression Comparison.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) from back-splicing of exon(s) have been recently identified to be broadly expressed in eukaryotes, in tissue- and species- specific manners. Although functions of most circRNAs remain elusive, some circRNAs are shown to be functional in gene expression regulation and potentially relate to diseases. Due to their stability, circRNAs can also be used as biomarkers for diagnosis. Profiling circRNAs by integrating their expression among different samples thus provides molecular basis for...

Patterns of Mutation Within An Emerging Endemic Lineage of HEV-3a.

The hepatitis E virus can cause chronic infections in immuno-suppressed patients, and cases have been on the rise globally. Viral mutations during such infections are difficult to characterize. We deep sequenced viral populations from 15 immuno-compromised patients with chronic HEV to identify the viral lineage and describe viral mutational hotspots within and across patients. 21 viral RNA samples were collected between 2012-2017 from a single hospital in Singapore. Sequences covering a total of 3894bp of t...
