Chlamydia Conjunctivitis in 2 Prepubertal Children: An Uncommon Presentation of Child Sexual Abuse.

Sexually transmitted infection as the result of child sexual abuse in prepubertal children is uncommon. Chlamydia trachomatis conjunctivitis is an even less common entity in prepubertal children outside the newborn period. This report details the presentation of 2 children with conjunctivitis who were subsequently diagnosed as having C. trachomatis conjunctivitis. One child was also diagnosed as having rectal and pharyngeal C. trachomatis infection, and the other also had genital C. trachomatis infection. E...

A Bioinformatic Pipeline for Monitoring of the Mutational Stability of Viral Drug Targets with Deep-Sequencing Technology.

The efficient development of antiviral drugs, including efficient antiviral small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), requires continuous monitoring of the strict correspondence between a drug and the related highly variable viral DNA/RNA target(s). Deep sequencing is able to provide an assessment of both the general target conservation and the frequency of particular mutations in the different target sites. The aim of this study was to develop a reliable bioinformatic pipeline for the analysis of millions of short,...

Feeling Exhausted? Tuning Irf4 Energizes Dysfunctional T Cells.

The regulatory mechanisms governing T cell exhaustion remain incompletely understood. Man et al. (2017) and Wu et al. (2017) report that the T cell receptor responsive transcription factor Irf4 promotes T cell exhaustion in chronic viral infection but dampens exhaustion in response to tissue allografts.

There are now 40 GVN Centers of Excellence and 6 Affiliate laboratories in 24 countries. The 2017 meeting was held from September 25-27 in Melbourne, Australia, and was hosted by the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity and the Institut Pasteur. This report highlights the recent accomplishments of GVN researchers in se...

Outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis associated with a re-emerging GII.P16-GII.2 norovirus in the spring of 2017 in Jiangsu, China.

A total of 64 acute gastroenteritis outbreaks with 2,953 patients starting in December of 2016 and occurring mostly in the late spring of 2017 were reported in Jiangsu, China. A recombinant GII.P16-GII.2 norovirus variant was associated with 47 outbreaks (73.4%) for the gastroenteritis epidemic, predominantly occurring in February and March of 2017. Sequence analysis of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) and capsid protein of the viral isolates from these outbreaks confirmed that this GII.P16-GII.2 str...

LncRNA Seduction of GOT2 Goes Viral.

Mechanisms of viral infection are active areas of investigation. In a recent issue of Science, Wang et al. (2017) reveal an additional function of a host-encoded long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) in regulating viral expression by binding a host metabolic enzyme to enhance its catalytic activity.

ChAMP: Updated Methylation Analysis Pipeline for Illumina BeadChips.

The Illumina Infinium HumanMethylationEPIC BeadChip is the new platform for high-throughput DNA methylation analysis, effectively doubling the coverage compared to the older 450K array. Here we present a significantly updated and improved version of the Bioconductor package ChAMP, which can be used to analyze EPIC and 450k data. Many enhanced functionalities have been added, including correction for cell-type heterogeneity, network analysis, and a series of interactive graphical user interfaces.

Alcaftadine 0.25% versus Olopatadine 0.1% in Preventing Cedar Pollen Allergic Conjunctivitis in Japan: A Randomized Study.

To compare alcaftadine and olopatadine ophthalmic solutions, and vehicle for preventing allergen-mediated conjunctivitis in Japanese subjects.

Amniotic membrane transplantation for ligneous conjunctivitis in a doberman.

An approximately 2-year-old female Doberman Pinscher was referred for the evaluation of bilateral, chronic proliferative conjunctivitis. Ophthalmic examination revealed bilateral thick, opaque pseudomembranes originating from the conjunctivae that prevented visualization of the cornea and interior structures of the eye. Histopathological findings of biopsies of the pseudomembranes were consistent with ligneous conjunctivitis. Serum plasminogen activity levels were within the normal range. Treatment with top...

Validation of a customized bioinformatics pipeline for a clinical next-generation sequencing test targeting solid tumor-associated variants.

Bioinformatic analysis is an integral and critical part of clinical next-generation sequencing. It is especially challenging for some pipelines to consistently identify insertions and deletions. We present the validation of an open source tumor amplicon pipeline (OTA-pipeline) for clinical next-generation sequencing targeting solid tumor-associated variants. Raw data generated from 557 TruSight Tumor 26 samples as well as in silico data were analyzed by the OTA-pipeline and legacy pipeline and compared. Dis...

Neonatal Onset of Epilepsy of Infancy with Migrating Focal Seizures Associated with a Novel GABRB3 Variant in Monozygotic Twins.

Recently, a study providing insight intomutational spectrum was published (Møller et al 2017). The authors report considerable pleiotropy even for single mutations and were not able to identify any genotype-phenotype correlations.

Data Analysis Pipeline for RNA-seq Experiments: From Differential Expression to Cryptic Splicing.

RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) is a high-throughput technology that provides unique insights into the transcriptome. It has a wide variety of applications in quantifying genes/isoforms and in detecting non-coding RNA, alternative splicing, and splice junctions. It is extremely important to comprehend the entire transcriptome for a thorough understanding of the cellular system. Several RNA-seq analysis pipelines have been proposed to date. However, no single analysis pipeline can capture dynamics of the entire tra...

Resistant Infantile Bacterial Conjunctivitis in Egypt: A Microbiology Study.

Risk-based underground pipeline safety management considering corrosion effect.

Due to the long term usage and irregular maintenance for corrosion checks, catastrophic accidents have been increasing in underground pipelines. In this study, a new safety management methodology of underground pipeline, risk-based pipeline management, is introduced reflecting corrosion effect. First, principle of the risk-based pipeline management is presented compared with an original method, qualitative measure. It is distinguished from the qualitative measure by reflecting societal risk and corrosion in...

Retrograde snare-assisted rescue via the anterior communicating artery for lost access during multiple overlapping pipeline embolization device placement: A technical case report.

The pipeline embolization device (PED; ev3, Irvine, California, USA) has been used to divert flow away from an aneurysm sac. The risk of complications may increase for flow diversion with giant aneurysms, since these cases may require multiple overlapping PEDs, which makes the technique highly complex.

The 2017 Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology.

The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology (TBSRTC) established a standardized, category-based reporting system for thyroid fine-needle aspiration (FNA) specimens. The 2017 revision reaffirms that every thyroid FNA report should begin with one of six diagnostic categories, the names of which remain unchanged since they were first introduced: (i) nondiagnostic or unsatisfactory; (ii) benign; (iii) atypia of undetermined significance (AUS) or follicular lesion of undetermined significance (FLUS);...

COPTEM: A Model to Investigate the Factors Driving Crude Oil Pipeline Transportation Emissions.

Previous transportation fuel life cycle assessment studies have not fully accounted for the full variability in the crude oil transport stage - e.g. transporting a light crude through a high-diameter pipeline, vs. transporting a heavy crude through a small-diameter pipeline. We develop a first principles, fluid mechanics-based crude oil pipeline transportation emissions model (COPTEM) that calculates the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with pipeline transport as a function of crude oil parameters,...
