Skull of the grey heron (Ardea cinerea): Detailed investigation of the orbital region.

The skull of the grey heron (Ardea cinerea) was examined with an emphasis on describing the orbital region. In the young (circa sixteen to seventeen days old) heron, the frontal bone (os frontale) and nasal bone (os nasale) comprised separate paired bones, connected by sutures (sutura interfrontalis, sutura internasalis and sutura frontonasalis plana). In adult animals, the relationship between these bones was different: the left and right frontal bone and the left and right nasal bone had grown together, a...

Delivering advanced therapies: The big pharma approach.

After two decades of focused development and some recent clinical successes, cell and gene therapy (CGT) is emerging as a promising approach to personalized medicines. Genetically engineered cells as a medical modality are poised to stand alongside or in combination with small molecule and biopharmaceutical approaches to bring new therapies to patients globally. Big pharma can play a vital role in industrializing CGT by focusing on diseases with high un-met medical need and compelling genetic evidence. Phar...

Cerebrospinal Fluid Abacavir Concentrations in HIV-positive Patients Following Once-daily Administration.

Abacavir is a widely used nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor whose cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) exposure has been previously assessed in twice-daily recipients. We studied abacavir CSF concentrations in 61 and 9 HIV-positive once-daily and twice-daily abacavir intakers. Patients on once-daily abacavir had higher plasma and CSF concentrations (96 vs. 22 ng/mL, p=0.038 and 123 vs. 49 ng/mL, p=0.038) but similar CSF-to-plasma ratios (0.8 vs. 0.5, p=0.500). CSF abacavir concentrations were adequate in once...

Moving pharma contracting into the era of accountability.

Assessing adherence to inhaled medication in asthma: Impact of once-daily versus twice-daily dosing frequency. The ATAUD study.

This study was aimed at evaluating whether once-daily regimens (od-r) show benefits in adherence when compared to twice-daily (td-r).

The Cost-Effectiveness of Screening in the Community to Reduce Osteoporotic Fractures in Older Women in the UK: Economic Evaluation of the SCOOP Study.

The SCOOP study was a two-arm randomized controlled trial conducted in the UK in 12,483 eligible women aged 70 to 85 years. It compared a screening program using the FRAX® risk assessment tool in addition to bone mineral density (BMD) measures versus usual management. The SCOOP study found a reduction in the incidence of hip fractures in the screening arm, but there was no evidence of a reduction in the incidence of all osteoporosis-related fractures. To make decisions about whether to implement any screen...

Adding value to daily chest X-rays in the ICU through education, restricted daily orders and indication-based prompting.

Chest X-rays (CXRs) are traditionally obtained daily in all patients on invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) in the intensive care unit (ICU). We sought to reduce overutilisation of CXRs obtained in the ICU, using a multifaceted intervention to eliminate automated daily studies.

What Did You Do Today? Variability in Daily Activities is Related to Variability in Daily Cognitive Performance.

Are the activities we do each day related to fluctuations in our daily cognitive performance? Positive longitudinal associations between cognitive, physical, and social activities and cognitive ability in adulthood are well established. However little is known about how this relationship may operate at the daily level.

Once-Daily Treatments for Methicillin-Susceptible Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia: Are They Good Enough?

Methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) bacteremia is a common cause of morbidity and mortality. First-line treatment requires frequent daily doses of an anti-staphylococcal beta-lactam. However, some physicians prescribe simpler once-daily regimens to improve compliance and improve healthcare utilization. We reviewed the literature regarding advantages, pitfalls, and efficacy of once-daily treatment options for MSSA bacteremia.

Daily exceedance concentration hours: A novel indicator to measure acute cardiovascular effects of PM2.5 in six Chinese subtropical cities.

Daily mean concentration cannot fully address the hourly variations of air pollution within one day. As such, we proposed a new indicator, daily exceedance concentration hours (DECH), to explore the acute cardiovascular effects of ambient PM2.5 (particles with aerodynamic diameters less than 2.5μm). The DECH in PM2.5 was defined as daily total concentration-hours >25μg/m3.

Punch and Scoop Technique for Removing Pilomatricoma.

Pilomatricomas are benign calcifying neoplasms derived from follicle matrix cells. Standard treatment for pilomatricomas involves complete surgical excision, with an overall low rate of recurrence. We discuss a simple alternative surgical technique that allows for removal of the lesion with less residual defect than complete excision.

Comparing daily drivers of problem drinking among older and younger adults: An electronic daily diary study using smartphones.

By 2030, numbers and proportions of older adults with substance-use problems are expected to increase. While risk factors for problem drinking in late life have been identified, it remains unknown whether these factors drive daily drinking among older problem drinkers. This study examined the daily drivers of drinking among problem drinkers, moderated by age, utilizing ecological momentary assessment (EMA).

Objectively Measured Daily Physical Activity and Postural Changes as Related to Positive and Negative Affect Using Ambulatory Monitoring Assessments.

The aim of the study was to determine whether objectively measured daily physical activity and posture of sitting, standing, and sit-to-stand transitions are associated with daily assessments of affect.

A guide to manufacturing CAR T cell therapies.

In recent years, chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) modified T cells have been used as a treatment for haematological malignancies in several phase I and II trials and with Kymriah of Novartis and Yescarta of KITE Pharma, the first CAR T cell therapy products have been approved. Promising clinical outcomes have yet been tempered by the fact that many therapies may be prohibitively expensive to manufacture. The process is not yet defined, far from being standardised and often requires extensive manual handling ...

The short-term impact of economic uncertainty on motor vehicle collisions.

Stress and anxiety lead to attention loss and sleep deprivation and may reduce driving performance, increasing the risk of motor vehicle collision. We used evidence from a natural experiment to examine whether daily changes in economic uncertainty, potentially leading to attention or sleep loss, are associated with collisions in Great Britain. Daily data from the economic policy uncertainty index, derived from analysis of daily UK newspapers, were linked to the daily number of motor vehicle collisions in Gr...

Short-term changes in daily movement behaviour influence salivary C-reactive protein in healthy women.

This study assessed the effect of changing daily movement behaviour on C-reactive protein (CRP) measured in saliva. Two groups of women either reduced daily movement or increased physical activity for 10 days. Salivary CRP increased by 31% in the sedentary group (0.378±0.596 to 0.487±0.793 µg·L-1) and decreased by 22% in the active group (0.414±0.640 to 0.259±0.284 µg·L-1). These results suggest short-term changes in daily movement behaviour can affect salivary CRP, a marker of systemic inflammation...

Validation of adapted daily dose definitions for hospital antibacterial drug use evaluation: a multicentre study.

The WHO/ATC (Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical) index DDD (WHO-DDD) is commonly used for drug consumption measurement. Discrepancies between WHO-DDD and actual prescribed daily doses (PDD) in hospitals have prompted alternative dose definitions adapted to doses recommended in hospital practice guidelines [recommended daily doses (RDD)].

Associations between ambient air pollution and daily mortality in a cohort of congestive heart failure: Case-crossover and nested case-control analyses using a distributed lag nonlinear model.

Persons with congestive heart failure may be at higher risk of the acute effects related to daily fluctuations in ambient air pollution. To meet some of the limitations of previous studies using grouped-analysis, we developed a cohort study of persons with congestive heart failure to estimate whether daily non-accidental mortality were associated with spatially-resolved, daily exposures to ambient nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3), and whether these associations were modified according to a series of in...

Educational scholarship is an important component for faculty at Academic Medical Centers, especially those with single-track promotion systems. Yet, faculty may lack the skills and mentorship needed to successfully complete projects. In addition, many educators feel undervalued.

Aging Parents' Disabilities and Daily Support Exchanges With Middle-Aged Children.

Aging parents often incur disabilities in activities of daily living, which may limit their ability to give support and necessitate increased support from middle-aged children. Research has predominantly assessed disabled parents' retrospective reports of receiving support, but we know little about their daily support exchanges with middle-aged children. This study examined practical support, emotional support, and advice that aging parents with and without disabilities provided and received from middle-age...

Comparison of the effect of daily versus bolus dose maternal vitamin Dsupplementation on the 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin Dto 25-hydroxyvitamin Dratio.

Supplementing lactating mothers with high doses of vitamin Dcan adequately meet vitamin D requirements of the breastfed infant. We compared the effect of bolus versus daily vitamin Ddosing in lactating mothers on vitamin Dcatabolism. We hypothesized that catabolism of 25(OH)Dto 24,25(OH)Dwould be greater in the bolus than in the daily dose group.
