Artemisia afra is one of the most widely used herbal remedies in South Africa. This highly aromatic shrub is used to treat various disorders including coughs, colds, influenza, and malaria. Due to the long tradition of use and popularity of A. afra, it has been successfully commercialised and can currently be bought from various internet stores and pharmacies. The most notable indication is for the prophylaxis and treatment of Plasmodium falciparum infections. In 2013, the Medicine Control Council (MCC) of ...
We evaluated the presence of prolonged mental health sequelae in the aftermath of a patient safety incident and the impact of a formal complaint or lawsuit on these mental health sequelae in 19 hospitals and 2635 nurses and doctors. Of 2635 respondents, 983 (37.3%) reported a complaint and 190 (7.2%) reported a lawsuit. In both doctors and nurses prolonged mental health sequelae reflecting a stressor-related disorder were highly prevalent, each well over 20% overall. They were consistently more prevalent in...
Background The model of community pharmacy practice is changing remarkably not only in the West but also in developing countries, which has led retail pharmacies to transform into chain community pharmacies. However, very little is known about consumers' expectations and experiences with chain community pharmacies in developing countries. Objective This study aims to assess the expectations and experiences of consumers with services provided by chain community pharmacies in Lahore, Pakistan. Setting Four r...
Although tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death in the USA, it is routinely sold in pharmacies. In 2008, San Francisco became the first city in the USA to pass a tobacco-free pharmacy ordinance. Over the next decade, 171 municipalities enacted similar policies, and in 2018, Massachusetts banned tobacco sales in pharmacies. Our objective was to assess the perceived effects of tobacco-free pharmacy policies on displays, sales, customer visits and counselling.
Mutations in LRRK2 cause autosomal dominant and sporadic Parkinson's disease but the mechanisms involved in LRRK2 toxicity in PD are yet to be fully understood. We found that LRRK2 translocates to the nucleus by binding to seven in absentia homolog (SIAH-1), and in the nucleus it directly interacts with lamin A/C, independent of its kinase activity. LRRK2 knockdown caused nuclear lamina abnormalities and nuclear disruption. LRRK2 disease mutations mostly abolish the interaction with lamin A/C and, similar t...
Millions of tourists visit Malaysia annually while a large number of Malaysians travel overseas. Taking care of travellers' healthcare needs is important aspect of the healthcare system. Community pharmacies are ideally positioned to provide travel health-related services. However, studies are lacking in this area. Therefore, this study aims to explore the nature and type of travel health-related services provided by Malaysian community pharmacies.
[18F]FDG-PET/CT is one of the most important diagnostic techniques in the work-up of patients with FUO/IUO. Little is known how to optimize the diagnostic value of [18F]FDG-PET/CT in patients with FUO/IUO.
Patent application trends were investigated for induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technologies, particularly disease-specific cell technologies related to iPSCs, in the U.S., Japanese, and European applications during 2017. The number of patent applications for iPSC technologies was 1516 in the United States, 895 in Japan, and 420 in Europe, with 5% of applications for disease-specific cell technologies. In contrast, the percentages of patent applications for iPSC preparation and differentiation technolo...
This research assessed the potential for expanding access to family planning through private sector pharmacies in Senegal, by examining the quality of the services provided through private sector pharmacies, and pharmacy staff and client interest in private sector pharmacy-based family planning services. This was a cross-sectional, descriptive study conducted in eight urban districts in and around Dakar and two urban districts outside of Dakar employing an audit of 225 pharmacies, a survey with 486 private...
P10 is a small, abundant baculovirus protein that accumulates to high levels in the very late stages of the infection cycle. It is associated with a number of intracellular structures and implicated in diverse processes from occlusion body maturation to nuclear stability and lysis. However, studies have also shown that it is non-essential for virus replication, at least in cell culture. Here, we describe the use of serial block-face scanning electron microscopy to achieve high-resolution 3D characterisation...
Long interspersed elements-1 (LINE-1, L1) are retrotransposons that hold the capacity of self-propagation in the genome with potential mutagenic outcomes. How somatic cells restrict L1 activity and how this process becomes dysfunctional during aging and in cancer cells is poorly understood. L1s are enriched at lamin-associated domains, heterochromatic regions of the nuclear periphery. Whether this association is necessary for their repression has been elusive. Here we show that the sirtuin family member SIR...
The aim of this study was to define prognostic value and optimal threshold of first thyroglobulin (fTg) measured after thyroidectomy and just before radio-iodine therapy (RIT), in low/intermediate risk patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC).
Previous studies have shown an association between urinary incontinence (UI) and increased mortality, independent of demographics and health status. However, they do not account for the effect of frailty, as a state of vulnerability. We evaluated whether there was an association between UI and mortality, and if so, whether adjustment for a frailty index affects the association.
PET Textural indices could have an add-on diagnostic value for diagnosis of malignancy in patients with FDG-avid adrenal lesions.
To assess the impact of incorporating a bidirectional immunization forecasting and reporting platform in the workflow of a regional community pharmacy chain with the use of time and motion methodologies.
Systemic inflammation is associated with increasing age. Yet, there are limited data about the association between age and systemic inflammation within older adults, and whether older age is also associated with cellular and nuclear signaling markers of inflammation. In community-dwelling older adults (N=262, 60-88 years), systemic levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor II (sTNF-RII); levels of toll-like receptor-4 (TLR-4) stimulated monocytic pr...
Nuclear estrogen receptor activation by insulin-like growth factor-1 in Neuro-2A neuroblastoma cells requires endogenous estrogen synthesis and is mediated by mutually repressive MAPK and PI3K cascades.
Non-canonical mechanisms of estrogen receptor activation may continue to support women's cognitive health long after cessation of ovarian function. These mechanisms of estrogen receptor activation may include ligand-dependent actions via locally synthesized neuroestrogens and ligand-independent actions via growth factor-dependent activation of intracellular kinase cascades. We tested the hypothesis that ligand-dependent and ligand-independent mechanisms interact to activate nuclear estrogen receptors in the...
The combination of esophageal atresia, congenital duodenal obstruction, and anorectal malformation has seldom been reported. We describe the largest series of patients with such association, which we summed up with the mnemonic acronym DATE [D-duodenal obstruction, A-anorectal malformation (ARM), and TE-tracheoesophageal fistula with esophageal atresia].
Evidence from clinical trials should form the foundation of healthcare advice. Comparatively little has been investigated about the implementation of evidence in over-the-counter (OTC) counselling in community pharmacies. The objective of this study was to explore the current impact of clinical trials on OTC counselling from the perspective of pharmaceutical staff.
The surface contamination levels of 5 commonly used hazardous drugs in hospital pharmacies are summarized, identifying practice patterns associated with contamination.
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common among patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and is associated with worse clinical outcomes. This study aims to identify whether the association of CKD with HFpEF is independent of underlying echocardiographic abnormalities.
Medicaid expansion under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act led to one of the largest gains in health insurance coverage for nonelderly adults in the United States. However, its association with cardiovascular mortality is unclear.
The ribosomal RNA genes (rDNA) comprise a highly repetitive gene cluster. The copy number of genes at this locus can readily change and is therefore one of the most unstable regions of the genome. DNA damage in rDNA occurs after binding of the replication fork blocking protein Fob1 in S phase, which triggers unequal sister chromatid recombination. However, the precise mechanisms by which such DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) are repaired is not well understood. Here, we demonstrate that the conserved protein...
