The system of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and its receptor c-Met plays a critical role in tumor invasive growth and metastasis. The mortality rate of colorectal cancer (CRC), one of the most commonly diagnosed malignancies, is increased by it gradual development into metastasis, most frequently in the liver. Overexpression of c-Met, the protein tyrosine kinase receptor for the HCF/scatter factor, has been implicated in the progression and metastasis of human colorectal carcinoma. In this study, we aimed ...
Many cancers metastasize regionally through lymphatics before metastasizing systemically through blood vessels. However, metastasis through blood has been studied much more extensively than metastasis through lymph. Recently in Science, Lee et al. (2019) offered new insight into lymph node metastasis by showing that melanoma cells must undergo metabolic changes during this process and that it is driven by localized accumulation of bile acids.
The esophageal metastasis of breast cancer is rare. Moreover, it is extremely unusual for patients to experience the symptoms of esophageal metastasis during their lifetimes. We present a case of dysphagia caused by esophageal metastasis after a long interval following a primary mastectomy.
Renal cell carcinomas (CCR) account for 90% of renal tumors. Presence of latent distant metastasis is characteristic of RCC and may manifest more than a decade after nephrectomy. Gallbladder (GB) is a rare site of metastasis, with few reports in the literature. A case of metastasis from RCC to GB nine years after initial diagnosis is reported herein.
Pancreatic adenocarcinoma is a highly aggressive malignancy that usually presents at a late stage. Common sites of metastasis include the liver, lung and adjacent lymph nodes. Cervical lymph node involvement has been reported previously but there are no documented cases of submandibular lymph node metastasis in the available literature. We describe a case of pancreatic adenocarcinoma metastasis to the left submandibular lymph node with no confirmed concurrent sites of metastasis.
Glioblastoma (GBM) is a rapid-growing, central nervous system neoplasm. We report a case of GBM with extensive intramedullary lumbar drop metastasis and highly unusual osseous spine metastasis from a primary infratentorial GBM ten years after initial diagnosis, which, to our knowledge, has not been described.
Metastasis from melanoma carries poor prognosis and survival. Average life expectancy is estimated four to six months following diagnosis of skeletal metastasis. Comprehensive treatment, along with newer immunotherapies, has shown promising results.
Tumor metastasis is a major cause of colorectal cancer-related deaths. The liver is a common site of colorectal cancer metastasis. There is no effective treatment for patients with colorectal cancer with liver metastasis. Due to the complicated and variable metastasis process, the current treatment methods for colorectal cancer liver metastasis cannot meet the clinical needs. Currently, no effective delivery system is available for clinical use which could specifically target metastatic cancers. The emergen...
Humans are not the only species to spontaneously develop metastatic cancer as cases of metastasis have been reported in a wide range of animals, including dinosaurs. Mouse models have been an invaluable tool in experimental and clinical metastasis research, with the use of genetically-engineered mouse models that spontaneously develop metastasis or ectopic/orthotopic transplantation of tumour cells to wildtype or immunodeficient mice being responsible for many key advances in our understanding of metastasis...
The distant metastasis in gastric has become an obstacle for treatment in clinic. However, the underlying mechanism is not well illustrated. Here, our aim is to reveal the mechanism and try to explore the potential strategy to overcome the distant metastasis.
Great progress has been made in cancer therapeutics. However, metastasis remains the predominant cause of death from cancer. Importantly, metastasis can manifest many years after initial treatment of the primary cancer. This is because cancer cells can remain dormant before forming symptomatic metastasis. An important question is whether metastasis research should focus on the early treatment of metastases, before they are clinically evident ("overt"), or on developing treatments to stop overt metastasis (s...
Hypoxia is an indispensable factor in the progression of metastasis. Hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), the core element in generating the hypoxia response, induces invasion and metastasis by promoting epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). This study explored the underlying mechanism of hypoxia associated with the invasion and metastasis of gastric cancer (GC).
The Metastasis Research Society (MRS) 17th Biennial conference on metastasis was held on the 1st to the 5th of August 2018 at Princeton University, NJ, USA. The meeting was held around themes addressing notable aspects of the understanding and treatment of metastasis and metastatic disease covering basic, translational, and clinical research. Importantly, the meeting was largely supported by our patient advocate partners including Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Theresa's Research Foundation and METAvivor. Th...
Dynamic remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM) around tumor cells is crucial for the tumor progressions. However, the mechanism is not well defined. Here, we aimed to reveal the underlying mechanism of ECM induced metastasis and provide innovative strategy to suppress the distant metastasis induced by ECM.
Metastasis, a critical phase of tumor progression, remains a primary challenge in treating cancer and a major cause of cancer mortality. Cell-cell communication via extracellular vesicles (exosomes and microvesicles) between primary tumor cells and the microenvironment of distant organs is crucial for pre-metastatic niche (PMN) formation and metastasis. Here, we review work on the contribution of exosome cargo to cancer progression, the role of exosomes in PMN establishment, and the function of exosomes in ...
Although identification of lymph node (LN) metastasis is a well-recognized strategy for improving outcomes in patients with gastric cancer (GC), currently there is lack of availability of adequate molecular biomarkers that can identify such metastasis. Herein we have developed a robust gene-expression signature for detecting LN metastasis in early stage GC by using a transcriptome-wide biomarker discovery and subsequent validation in multiple clinical cohorts.
Kidney metastasis in colorectal cancer are rare. A number of publications dedicated to this topic is quite limited. In this article a rare observation of metastasis of colorectal cancer to the kidney is described.
ANLN has been identified as an actin-binding protein and previous studies have suggested that ANLN is associated with actin cytoskeletal dynamics. Lung adenocarcinoma is a poor prognosis tumor. Metastasis is a very common complication and is regarded as the main cause for an unsatisfactory treatment outcome. Whether ANLN is involved in the metastasis of lung adenocarcinoma is unknown.
Pancreatic metastasis from lung cancer is not an indication for surgical resection because patients with such a condition present with multiple-organ metastases. Therefore, the significance of resection in patients with pancreatic metastasis from lung cancer remains unclear. Here we report a case of a long-term survivor of pancreatic metastasis from lung cancer after pancreatectomy.
Metastasis is the main cause of death in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC), but the molecular mechanism is not yet fully understood. Previous studies have shown that P zero-related protein (PZR), a member of the immunoglobulin family, can promote fibronectin-dependent migration of mouse embryonic fibroblasts as well as invasion and metastasis of hepatic carcinoma cells. However, the role of PZR in CRC remains unclear. In this study, we determined the ectopic expression of PZR in CRC tissues, and results...
Peritoneal metastasis of prostate cancer is extremely rare, with only a few cases reported. A 78-yearold male patient was introduced to our hospital presenting with a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level of 94.0 ng/ml at examination. He was diagnosed with poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma of the prostate, with a Gleasonscore of 9 (5＋4) at cT3bN0M0. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy was performed after 6 months of combined-androgen blockade (CAB) therapy. Twenty-one months later, several lymph node...
Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma is a very rare tumor originating from the peritoneal serous mesothelium. Meningeal metastasis of malignant peritoneal is even more rare. Here, we reported a case of a 60-year-old female patient with a history of exposure to asbestos for 10 years who presented with massive peritoneal effusion followed by disorder of consciousness and symptoms of cranial nerve injury. The patient was diagnosed as peritoneal mesothelioma with meningeal metastasis through neurological symptoms,...
Whether Delphian lymph node (DLN) metastasis is a reliable predictor of widespread lymph node metastasis in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) remains controversial. This meta-analysis investigated the value of DLN metastasis for predicting central and lateral involvement in PTC.
Metastasis is the main reason for high recurrence and poor survival of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The molecular mechanism underlying HCC metastasis remains unclear. In this study, we found that argininosuccinate synthase 1 (ASS1) expression was significantly decreased and down-regulation of ASS1 was closely correlated with poor prognosis in HCC patients. DNA methylation led to the down-regulation of ASS1 in HCC. Stable silencing of ASS1 promoted migration and invasion of HCC cells, whereas overexpressi...
