Overexpression of Androgen, Oestrogen and Progesterone Receptors in Skin Lesions of Becker's Naevus.

Becker's naevus is androgen-dependent. The aim of this study was to investigate whether oestrogen and progesterone receptors are involved in this disorder. Immunohistochemistry showed that epidermal expression of androgen receptors, oestrogen receptors (α, β) and progesterone receptors was higher in skin lesions of Becker's naevus than in perilesional and control skin. Androgen receptor overexpression was observed in pilosebaceous glands, while oestrogen and progesterone receptor overexpression was seen i...

A novel mutation of dystrophin in a Becker muscular dystrophy family with severe cardiac involvement: from genetics to clinicopathology.

Dystrophin gene defects are the pathogenic molecular basis of Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD), characterised by skeletal myopathy and cardiomyopathy. Because of the broad phenotype spectrum, it was difficult to use the traditional diagnostic method to achieve an early accurate diagnosis of BMD-associated cardiomyopathy.

Interventions for preventing and treating cardiac complications in Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy and X-linked dilated cardiomyopathy.

The dystrophinopathies include Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD), and X-linked dilated cardiomyopathy (XLDCM). In recent years, co-ordinated multidisciplinary management for these diseases has improved the quality of care, with early corticosteroid use prolonging independent ambulation, and the routine use of non-invasive ventilation signficantly increasing survival. The next target to improve outcomes is optimising treatments to delay the onset or slow the progression of ca...

Roundup litigation discovery documents: implications for public health and journal ethics.

This paper reviews the court-released discovery documents obtained from litigation against Monsanto over its herbicide Roundup and through Freedom of Information Act requests (requests to regulatory agencies and public universities in the United States). We sought evidence of corporate malfeasance and undisclosed conflicts of interest with respect to issues of scientific integrity. The findings include evidence of ghostwriting, interference in journal publication, and undue influence of a federal regulatory...

Low-dose LNG-IUS as Therapy for Endometrial Hyperplasia. A Prospective Cohort Pilot Study.

Progestin therapy has been accepted as therapy for low- and medium-risk endometrial hyperplasia. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of the low-dose levonorgestrel-impregnated intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) 13.5 mg (Jaydess®, Bayer Pharmaceuticals, Berlin, Germany) as therapy for endometrial hyperplasia.

A case report of recessive myotonia congenita and early onset cognitive impairment: Is it a causal or casual link?

Myotonia congenita (MC) is a non-dystrophic myotonia inherited either in dominant (Thomsen) or recessive (Becker) form. MC is due to an abnormal functioning of skeletal muscle voltage-gated chloride channel (CLCN1), but the genotype/phenotype correlation remains unclear.

Mutation spectrum analysis of Duchenne/Becker muscular dystrophy in 68 families in Kuwait: The era of personalized medicine.

Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies (DMD/BMD) are X-linked recessive neuromuscular disorders characterized by progressive irreversible muscle weakness and atrophy that affect both skeletal and cardiac muscles. DMD/BMD is caused by mutations in the Dystrophin gene on the X chromosome, leading to the absence of the essential muscle protein Dystrophin in DMD. In BMD, Dystrophin is partially functioning with a shorter protein product. Recent advances in molecular therapies for DMD require precise genetic d...

Snapshot multi-wavelength interference microscope.

A snapshot multi-wavelength interference microscope is proposed for high-speed measurement of large vertical range discontinuous microstructures and surface roughness. A polarization CMOS camera with a linear micro-polarizer array and Bayer filter accomplishes snapshot multi-wavelength phase-shifting measurement. Four interferograms with 𝜋/2 phase shift are captured at each wavelength for phase measurement, the 2𝜋 ambiguities are removed by using two or three wavelengths.

Muscular Dystrophy Surveillance, Tracking, and Research Network pilot: Population-based surveillance of major muscular dystrophies at four U.S. sites, 2007-2011.

For 10 years, the Muscular Dystrophy Surveillance, Tracking, and Research Network (MD STARnet) conducted surveillance for Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy (DBMD). We piloted expanding surveillance to other MDs that vary in severity, onset, and sources of care.

Natural history of cardiac function in Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies on home mechanical ventilation.

Heart impairment is classical in dystrophinopathies and its management relies on medical drugs. Mechanical ventilation is used to treat respiratory failure, but can affect cardiac function. We aimed to investigate the natural history of cardiac function in patients with Duchenne (DMD) and Becker (BMD) muscular dystrophies on home mechanical ventilation (HMV).We reviewed the chart of DMD and BMD patients, followed in our institution, to obtain ventilation setting at HMV initiation and echocardiographic data ...

Acyl atractyligenin and carboxyatractyligenin glycosides from Antennaria rosea subsp. confinis.

Eight previously undescribed acyl atractyligenin and carboxyatractyligenin glycosides were isolated from whole Antennaria rosea subsp. confinis (Greene) R. J. Bayer (Compositae) [syn. Leontopodium leontopodioides (Willd.) Beauv. (Asteraceae)] plants and their structures were determined by spectroscopic and chemical methods. The compounds were trivially named leontopodiosides F-M. Seven of the compounds showed potent in vitro inhibitory activity toward pancreatic lipase with IC values ranging from 3.4 to 52....

Gastric Cancer Maximum Tumour Diameter Reduction Rate at CT Examination as a Radiological Index for Predicting Histopathological Regression after Neoadjuvant Treatment: A Multicentre GIRCG Study.

To investigate the role of maximum tumour diameter (D-max) reduction rate at CT examination in predicting histopathological tumour regression grade (TRG according to the Becker grade), after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC), in patients with resectable advanced gastric cancer (AGC).

Another look at the relationship between energy consumption, carbon dioxide emissions, and economic growth in South Africa.

This study explores the energy use and economic growth nexus from 1960 to 2016 in South Africa while accounting for capital, labour, and carbon dioxide emissions. We applied Bayer and Hanck (2013) combined co-integration approach, Pesaran et al. (2001) bounds test and Kripfganz and Schneider (2018) critical values and approximate p-values. The empirical evidence finds support for a long-run equilibrium relationship among investigated variables. The Granger causality test indicates one-way causality from ene...

End-of-life healthcare expenditure: Testing economic explanations using a discrete choice experiment.

Healthcare expenditure (HCE) spent during an individual's last year of life accounts for a high share of lifetime HCE. This finding is puzzling because an investment in health is unlikely to have a sufficiently long payback period. However, Becker et al. (2007) and Philipson et al. (2010) have advanced a theory designed to explain high willingness to pay (WTP) for an extension of life close to its end. Their testable implications are complemented by the concept of 'pain of risk bearing' introduced by Eeckho...

Synthetic biology in the German press: how implications of metaphors shape representations of morality and responsibility.

Synthetic biology (SynBio) represents a relatively young field of research which has developed into an important scientific endeavour. Characterised by a high degree of interdisciplinary work crossing disciplinary boundaries, such as biology, mathematics and engineering, SynBio has been, since its beginning, devoted to creating new biological functions, metabolic pathways or even minimal organisms. Although its often-articulated aim of developing new forms of life has so far not been archived, SynBio nowada...

Some Reflections on Combining Meta-Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling.

Meta-analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) are two of the most prominent statistical techniques employed in the behavioral, medical, and social sciences. They each have their own well-established research communities, terminologies, statistical models, software packages, and journals (Research Synthesis Methods and Structural Equation Modeling: A Multidisciplinary Journal). In this paper, I will provide some personal reflections on combining meta-analysis and SEM in the forms of meta-analytic SEM ...

Skipping of Duplicated Dystrophin Exons: In Vitro Induction and Assessment.

Duplications of one or more dystrophin exons that disrupt the reading frame account for about 15% of all Duchenne cases, and like the more common genomic deletions, most pathogenic duplications of single or multiple dystrophin exons are also amenable to targeted exon skipping. However, additional considerations must be taken into account: (1) skipping of all duplicated exons, and, flanking exons as necessary, will frequently be required to restore the reading frame and generate an in-frame Becker muscular d...

Improved bauxite residue dealkalization by combination of aerated washing and electrodialysis.

Bauxite residue, a major by-product of the alumina-producing Bayer process, is a serious environmental pollutant due to its high alkalinity. Here, we reported an operation system designed in our laboratory that included washing and electrodialysis dealkalization systems with aeration pipes. Washing with aeration releases a substantial amount of free alkali and attached alkali into water and increases the dealkalization efficiency. The washing liquid was treated with five steps of batch-mode electrodialysis....

MetScore: Site of Metabolism Prediction Beyond CYP P450 Enzymes.

The metabolism of xenobiotics by humans and other organisms is a complex process involving numerous enzymes that catalyze phase I (functionalization) and phase II (conjugation) reactions. We here introduce MetScore, a machine learning model that can predict both phase I and phase II reaction sites of drugs. We developed cheminformatics workflows to filter and process reactions to obtain suitable phase I and phase II data sets for model training. Employing a recently developed molecular representation based ...

Sensitivity and Resolution Improvement in RGBW Color Filter Array Sensor.

Recently, several red-green-blue-white (RGBW) color filter arrays (CFAs), which include highly sensitive W pixels, have been proposed. However, RGBW CFA patterns suffer from spatial resolution degradation owing to the sensor composition having more color components than the Bayer CFA pattern. RGBW CFA demosaicing methods reconstruct resolution using the correlation between white (W) pixels and pixels of other colors, which does not improve the red-green-blue (RGB) channel sensitivity to the W channel level....

Secondary Bone Defect in Neuromuscular Diseases in Childhood: A Longitudinal "Muscle-Bone Unit" Analysis.

To evaluate the potential bone defect in neuromuscular diseases, we conducted a longitudinal study including three groups of patients: 14 Duchenne muscular dystrophies (DMD) and 2 limb-girdle muscular dystrophies (LGMD); 3 Becker muscular dystrophies (BeMD) and 7 spinal muscular atrophies (SMA). Yearly osteodensitometries assessed body composition and bone mineral density (BMD) associated with bone markers and leptin. Along the 7-year study, 107 osteodensitometries showed that bone status evolved to osteope...

Small mutation screening in the DMD gene by whole exome sequencing of an argentine Duchenne/Becker muscular dystrophies cohort.

Dystrophinopathies are neuromuscular X-linked recessive diseases caused by mutations in the DMD gene. This study aimed to identify DMD gene small mutations by Whole Exome Sequencing (WES), in order to confirm clinical diagnosis, identify candidates for Ataluren treatment and perform carrier status testing. Furthermore, was our goal to characterize the DMD sequence variants and identify ancestral haplotypes. We analyzed 40 non-related individuals (38 affected boys with dystrophinopathy presumptive clinical d...
