Physician-Scientists: Medical Gladiators in the Arenas of Medicine and Science.

It is not an issue that basic science courses are vanishing from the medical curriculum.

There is some controversy regarding the role of and time devoted to so-called basic sciences in the medical curriculum. In this article, the author argues that nowadays basic sciences are a far less important element of the medical curriculum than in the past, and that in time they will likely be phased out completely. Arguments put forward are the changing role of the medical doctor, evidence that general clinical reasoning skills do not exist, and that the contrary assumption has led to havoc. He conclude...

Medical phycology 2017.

In 2014, ISHAM formed a new working group: "Medical Phycology: Protothecosis and Chlorellosis." The purpose of this working group is to help facilitate collaboration and communication among people interested in the pathogenic algae, to share ideas and work together. Here we present reports on recent work we have done in five areas. 1. The history of medical phycology as a branch of science. 2. Aspects of the genetics of Prototheca. 3. Aspects of the proteins of Prototheca. 4. Human infections caused by Prot...

Clinical Reasoning and Knowledge Organization: Bridging the Gap Between Medical Education and Neurocognitive Science.

The purpose of this pilot study was 2-fold. The first was to investigate the conceptual relationship between previously validated methodologies. The second was to establish a linkage between medical education research and current neurocognitive science that accounts for knowledge organization during the clinical reasoning process.

The "National Integrated Medical Imaging System" NIMIS-friend, not nimesis!

The "National Integrated Medical Imaging System" or NIMIS went live in 2011 and allows the movement of patient radiology imaging throughout the Irish health system. At the time of its launch, NIMIS was not only going to allow the filmless passage of patient radiology imaging but it was also envisaged that it would act as a medical image archive. The aim of this study was to assess the awareness and use of non-consultant hospital doctors and hospital consultants with regard to this medical image archive/refe...

Entrapment of a laryngotracheal topical anesthesia kit during tracheobronchial foreign body removal: a case report.

In order to reduce the irritation of the airway during tracheobronchial foreign body (TFB) removal, tracheal surface anesthesia is usually performed using a laryngotracheal topical anesthesia (LTA) kit (LTA20, Highgreen Medical Technology Company, China), but difficulty in withdrawing the LTA kit is rarely reported. We present a case of a difficulty to withdraw the LTA kit due to its entrapment by the movement of a TFB.

Trends in Publications on Medical Cannabis from the Year 2000.

Widespread use of cannabis as a drug and passage of legislation on its use should lead to an increase in the number of scientific publications on cannabis. The aim of this study was to compare trends in scientific publication for papers on medical cannabis, papers on cannabis in general, and all papers between the years 2000 and 2017. A search of PubMed and Web of Science was conducted. The overall number of scientific publications in PubMed increased 2.5-fold. In contrast, the number of publications on can...

Optical coherence tomography as a non-invasive method of enamel thickness diagnosis after orthodontic treatment by 3 different types of brackets.

Medical digital imaging is the basis of effective medical diagnosis and is now in the mainstream of a dynamically developing branch of science. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) enables real-time in situ imaging of tissues without the need for biopsy, histological procedures or X-rays.

A Comparative Study of Medical Device Regulations:: US, Europe, Canada, and Taiwan.

The medical device industry is an industry dealing with multiple types of products covering a wide range of applications. As the safety and effectiveness of medical devices are vital to human health, the products must be managed by strict regulations according to the different risk levels. A total product life cycle regulatory system including product design, manufacture, premarket gate keeping, and postmarket monitoring is a common framework for medical device regulations. However, the variety and innovati...
