Where's the Bonus in Bonus Bets? Assessing Sports Bettors' Comprehension of their True Cost.

Wagering inducements with bonus bets are prominently marketed and often have play-through conditions requiring further expenditure. However, these conditions are not usually presented in the inducement advertisement and may be difficult to locate. The play-through conditions themselves are complex and may lead bettors to miscalculate the inducement's true cost. Therefore, in relation to inducements with bonus bets, this study aimed to assess: (1) whether their perceived attractiveness varies with the amount...

It's about time: Earlier rewards increase intrinsic motivation.

Can immediate (vs. delayed) rewards increase intrinsic motivation? Prior research compared the presence versus absence of rewards. By contrast, this research compared immediate versus delayed rewards, predicting that more immediate rewards increase intrinsic motivation by creating a perceptual fusion between the activity and its goal (i.e., the reward). In support of the hypothesis, framing a reward from watching a news program as more immediate (vs. delayed) increased intrinsic motivation to watch the prog...

Providing a Smart Healthy Diet for the Low-Income Population: Qualitative Study on the Usage and Perception of a Designed Cooking App.

Health behaviors among low-income groups have become a major issue in the context of increasing social inequalities. The low-income population is less likely to be receptive to nutritional recommendations, but providing cooking advice could be more effective. In this domain, taking advantage of digital devices can be a bonus with its own challenges.

Bonus Effects of Anti-Diabetic Drugs: Possible Beneficial Effects on Endothelial Dysfunction, Vascular Inflammation and Atherosclerosis.

Diabetes currently affects more than 400 million people worldwide. This metabolic disorder causes various micro- and macrovascular complications that accelerate atherosclerosis and yet trigger other cardiovascular diseases. The characteristic frame of hyperglycaemia, hyperinsulinaemia and hyperlipidaemia in diabetes increases several inflammatory mediators leading to endothelial dysfunction and pro-atherosclerotic processes. This MiniReview summarizes evidence that anti-diabetic drugs have effects beyond lo...

Blowing up money? The earnings penalty of smoking in the 1970s and the 21st century.

We analyze the earnings penalty of smoking among Swedish twins in two social contexts: the 1970s, when smoking was common and widely accepted and when there were relatively few tobacco laws aiming to reduce smoking; and the 2000s, when smoking had become more expensive, stigmatizing and less common, and when tobacco laws and regulations had intensified. The results show that the short-term earnings penalty of smoking was much higher in the 21st century than in the 1970s for men. For women, smokers had on av...

Targeted molecular dynamics calculations of free energy profiles using a nonequilibrium friction correction.

As standard unbiased molecular dynamics (MD) simulations become impractical for sampling rare events, ``targeted MD'' employs a moving distance constraint to enforce rare transitions along some reaction coordinate $x$. To calculate free energy profiles from these nonequilibrium simulations via $\Delta G(x) = W(x) - W_{\rm diss}(x)$, apart from the (readily obtained) work $W(x)$ performed on the system also the dissipated work $W_{\rm diss}(x)$ is required. By employing a second-order cumulant expansion of J...

Life's Biological Chemistry: A Destiny or Destination Starting from Prebiotic Chemistry?

Research into understanding the origins -and evolution- of life has long been dominated by the concept of taking clues from extant biology and extrapolating its molecules and pathways backwards in time. This approach has also guided the search for solutions to the problem of how contemporary biomolecules would have arisen directly from prebiotic chemistry on early earth. However, the continuing difficulties in finding universally convincing solutions in connecting prebiotic chemistry to biological chemistry...

To look or not to look?: Reward, selection history and oculomotor guidance.

The current eye-tracking study examined the influence of reward on oculomotor performance, and the extent to which learned stimulus-reward associations interacted with voluntary oculomotor control with a modified paradigm based on the classical anti-saccade task. Participants were shown two equally salient stimuli simultaneously: a gray and a colored circle, and were instructed to make a fast saccade to one of them. During the first phase of the experiment, participants made a fast saccade towards the color...

Distress tolerance to auditory feedback and functional connectivity with the auditory cortex.

Distress tolerance is the capacity to withstand negative affective states in pursuit of a goal. Low distress tolerance may bias an individual to avoid or escape experiences that induce affective distress, but the neural mechanisms underlying the bottom-up generation of distress and its relationship to behavioral avoidance are poorly understood. During a neuroimaging scan, healthy participants completed a mental arithmetic task with easy and distress phases, which differed in cognitive demands and positive v...

Separation and Identification of Isomeric and Structurally Related Synthetic Cannabinoids Using 2D Liquid Chromatography and High Resolution Mass Spectrometry.

Novel psychoactive substances (NPS) are emerging drugs of abuse that are variations of existing compounds intended to cause a CNS psychotropic effect. Some NPS are so comparable in structure and physicochemical properties that they co-elute using traditional single column chromatographic techniques and therefore will not be detected as individual compounds. 2D liquid chromatography (2D-LC) has demonstrated applicability in difficult separations of small molecules and compounds in complex mixtures. It was hy...

Malfunctioning of Chaperone-Mediated Autophagy in Parkinson's Disease: Feats, Constraints, and Flaws of Modulators.

Homeostatic regulation of class II programmed cell death/autophagy for the degradation and elimination of substandard organelles and defective proteins is decisive for the survival of dopaminergic neurons. Chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA), one of the most highly dedicated self-sacrificing events, is accountable for the partial elimination of redundant soluble cytoplasmic proteins in Parkinson's disease (PD). CMA is characterized by the selective delivery of superfluous protein containing lysine-phenylalan...

Reward circuitry activation reflects social preferences in the face of cognitive effort.

Research at the intersection of social neuroscience and cognitive effort is an interesting new area for exploration. There is great potential to broaden our understanding of how social context and cognitive effort processes, currently addressed in disparate literatures, interact with one another. In this paper, we briefly review the literature on cognitive effort, focusing on effort-linked valuation and the gap in the literature regarding cognitive effort in the social domain. Next, we present a study desig...
