Mexican cleft surgeons provide multidisciplinary comprehensive cleft lip and palate care to children in Mexico. Many Mexican cleft surgeons have extensive experience with foreign, visiting surgeons. The purpose of this study was to characterize Mexican cleft surgeons' domestic and volunteer practice and to learn more about Mexican cleft surgeons' experience with visiting surgeons.
Orthopaedic surgeons are routinely exposed to intraoperative radiation and, therefore, follow the principle of "as low as reasonably achievable" with regard to occupational safety. However, standardized education on the long-term health effects of radiation and the basis for current radiation exposure limits is limited in the field of orthopaedics. Much of orthopaedic surgeons' understanding of radiation exposure limits is extrapolated from studies of survivors of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasa...
Value of Global Surgical Activities for US Academic Health Centers: A Position Paper by the Association of Academic Surgeons Global Affairs Committee, the Society of University Surgeons Committee on Global Academic Surgery, and the American College of Surgeons' Operation Giving Back.
Academic global surgery value to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is increasingly understood, yet value to academic health centers (AHCs) remains unclear.
The American College of Surgeons reports that 60% of the hundreds of thousands of surgical site infections occurring annually are preventable. The practice of surgeons taking phone calls while remaining sterile in the operating field is often accomplished by interposing a sterile disposable towel between the phone and their glove. After completing the call, surgeons resume operating. The purpose of our study is to test the conceptual idea of whether bacteria transmit from an inanimate object, such as a tele...
Wnt signaling is involved in atherosclerotic plaque formation directly and indirectly by modulating cardiovascular risk factors. We investigated whether circulating concentrations of Wnt inhibitors are associated with cardiovascular events in subjects with intermediate cardiovascular risk.
Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have positive effects on weight loss, blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, and glycemic control. They exhibit a broad range of effects on the cardiovascular system that are independent of changes in blood glucose. Cardiovascular outcome trials have demonstrated safety of GLP-1 RAs but results for cardiovascular efficacy were varied. The aim of the present review is the assessment of the effects of GLP-1 RAs on cardiovascular risk factors, and major cardiovasc...
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Compared to traditional therapeutic strategies, three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is one of the most advanced techniques for creating complicated cardiovascular implants with biomimetic features, which are capable of recapitulating both the native physiochemical and biomechanical characteristics of the cardiovascular system. The present review provides an overview of the cardiovascular system, as well as describes the princ...
To our knowledge, few studies have compared complications and surgical outcomes of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis between junior attending surgeons and senior attending surgeons.
To assess our practice according to the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (STS-EACTS) Mortality Score and to the new concept of unit performance.
To show long-term cardiovascular safety of the GLP-1 receptor agonists for diabetes patients with cardiovascular risk.
This study reports the results of 2 separate surveys of British Hip Society (BHS) members relating to leg length inequality (LLI) after primary total hip replacement (THR). Survey 1: Investigates the members' opinions on the effect of LLI on the outcome of THR and explores the acceptable limits of LLI. Survey 2: Reports on the intraoperative techniques currently used by BHS members to minimise LLI after THR. Results - Survey 1: 97% of all surgeons completing the survey believed that LLI can affect the outco...
The burden of peripheral artery disease (PAD) and diabetes in Asia is projected to increase. Asia also has the highest incidence and prevalence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the world. Therefore, most Asian patients with PAD might have diabetic PAD or ESRD-related PAD. Given these pandemic conditions, critical limb ischemia (CLI) with diabetes or ESRD, the most advanced and challenging subset of PAD, is an emerging public health issue in Asian countries. Given that diabetic and ESRD-related CLI have ...
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and is also a major cause of disability worldwide. Indeed, even in well-treated patients for hypertension or dyslipidemia, there is still a high cardiovascular risk called residual risk. It is of utmost importance to identify the pathway leading from risk factors to cardiovascular disease to further improve stroke and myocardial infarction prevention. In this review, we presented some of experimental and epidemiological evidences suggesting that microbiot...
Although alexithymia has been suggested to be associated with cardiovascular diseases, studies are scarce and a causal relationship is questionable. This study explored the prospective association between alexithymia and cardiovascular events in middle-aged participants without cardiovascular history at baseline.
To analyze RF surgeons' attitude to accelerated recovery program (ERP) and to determine how often it is used in daily work.
Objective To identify organizational barriers to and facilitators for female surgeons' career progression. Design Systematic review of qualitative and quantitative studies relating to organizational barriers to and facilitators for female Surgeons' career progression. After the quality assessment of the peer-reviewed journal articles, twelve articles were selected for full review. Thematic analysis was used to identify key themes in these selected articles. Setting The studies solely focused on organization...
Reports of surgical outcomes comparing proficient surgeons performing either robotic-assisted or video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy are lacking. We evaluate the comparative effectiveness of robotic-assisted and video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomies by surgeons who performed ≥20 annual cases in a national database.
To aid implementing an ethics curriculum in an orthopaedic residency program, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) created 14 ethics scenarios. Because delivery of this curriculum could be burdensome, an online module-based curriculum might be optimal.

Sex-specific differences in pathophysiology, prevalence, and impact of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors may explain the high cardiovascular mortality rates in women.
To date, there have been relatively few studies of acute cardiovascular responses to controlled ozone inhalation, although a number of observational studies have reported significant positive associations between both ambient ozone levels and acute cardiovascular events and long-term ozone exposure and cardiovascular mortality.
