Metabolomics based on UHPLC-QToF- and APGC-QToF-MS reveals metabolic pathways reprogramming in response to tidal cycles in the sub-littoral species Mimachlamys varia exposed to aerial emergence.

Mimachlamys varia is a sub-littoral bivalve encountered from Norway to the Mediterranean Sea, which lives mostly byssally attached to rocks. During the low tide period, M. varia individuals, located highest on the shore, may experience short time of aerial exposure and face a low availability of oxygen. Here we report a comparative metabolomic profiling of gill samples of M. varia obtained by both LC-QToF and APGC-QToF mass spectrometry, to analyze metabolic changes occurring during emersion in comparison w...

Exploring integument transcriptomes, cuticle ultrastructure, and cuticular hydrocarbons profiles in eusocial and solitary bee species displaying heterochronic adult cuticle maturation.

Differences in the timing of exoskeleton melanization and sclerotization are evident when comparing eusocial and solitary bees. This cuticular maturation heterochrony may be associated with life style, considering that eusocial bees remain protected inside the nest for many days after emergence, while the solitary bees immediately start outside activities. To address this issue, we characterized gene expression using large-scale RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), and quantified cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) through ga...

Isolation and exploitation of minority: Game theoretical analysis.

We investigate various group-size distributions occurring in a situation where each group's resource is exposed to appropriation by other groups. The amount of appropriation depends on the size difference between groups. Our work focuses on the cases where the entire community isolates a small group or even an individual to maximize its gain. While people's basic motivation to form a group can be understood based on the group-size effect on multiplying a collective asset, sensitive factors that induce a asy...

Proximate, fatty acids and metals in edible marine bivalves from Italian market: Beneficial and risk for consumers health.

Seafood is recognized as a healthy food choice due to high contents of essential nutrients, including polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) of the n-3 family. However, seafood is often contaminated by toxic compounds, which have adverse effects on human health. The aim of this study was to provide information about the percentage of edible part, condition index and the benefit and risk for human consumers health associated to the consumption of eight bivalve species (Flexopecten glaber, Mimachlamys varia, Mod...

Reply to readers (Manuscript ID: HEP-18-1297).

In our preliminary experiment, we divided patients into 3 groups, 10 patients in each group. Group A received standard medicine treatment (SMT) only. Group B was treated with allogeneic bone marrow-derived MSCs (BM-MSCs) every week for 4 weeks, at a dosage of 1x10 per Kg. For Group C the dosage of BM-MSCs was 10x10 per Kg. No significant difference was found in the levels of liver functions and 24 week survival rate between Group B and Group C (data not published). This may be related with the peripheral ve...

Ostracism drives group moralization and extreme group behavior.

Sharing beliefs, particularly moral beliefs, is a way to establish social connections. We hypothesized that ostracism leads people who are high in the need to belong to adhere to the moral beliefs of an ingroup, and that moralizing the beliefs of one's group increases the willingness to endorse extreme behavior on behalf of the group. Across two studies, participants were ostracized or included, rated the moral relevance of their group values, and indicated their endorsement of extreme behavior on behalf of...

Post-MI treatment with G-CSF and EPO-liposome with SLX repairs infarcted myocardium through EPCs mobilization and activation of prosurvival signals in rabbits.

We investigated whether combination therapy of G-CSF and erythropoietin (EPO)-liposome with Siaryl Lewis X (SLX) is more cardioprotective than G-CSF or EPO-liposome with SLX alone. For the purpose of generating myocardial infarction (MI), rabbits underwent 30 minutes of coronary occlusion and 14 days of reperfusion. We administered saline (control group, i.v.,), G-CSF (G group, 10 μg/kg/day × 5 days, i.c., starting at 24 hours after reperfusion), EPO-liposome with SLX (LE group, i.v., 2500 IU/kg E...

Stability of anti-A blood group titers among blood group B renal transplant candidates.

As deceased donor kidney allocation is based in part on blood type compatibility, group B candidates are disadvantaged due to their disproportionate representation on the wait list compared to the group B donor pool. To mitigate this discrepancy, group B candidates can receive group A or A B donor kidneys if their anti-A titers are below a predetermined cutoff. Currently, eligibility is reverified quarterly to UNet based on individual center protocols, which can vary due to a lack of set guidelines for moni...

Mechanical Augmentation With Absorbable Alginate Sheet Enhances Healing of the Rotator Cuff.

For anatomical restoration of a repaired rotator cuff, mechanical augmentation of the repaired structure is essential. Using histological and biomechanical evaluation in a rat model, the authors sought to determine the efficacy of an absorbable alginate sheet at the supraspinatus tendon-to-bone repair site for healing of the rotator cuff tear. Forty adult (12 weeks old) male Sprague- Dawley wild-type rats were used in this study. The animals were randomly separated into 2 groups: group 1, conventional supra...
